I would suggest you put it back how it was and find some other way to cut down bandwidth usage. The thumbnail is one of the things that makes SEN popular and a great site. Removing it from the list view isn't a good idea and I doubt v5 will have the double-read problem described.
What I suggest is that you give users an option to have a list view or a thumbnail view. List view of course being more compact and showing more maps and thumbnail view showing the attached screenshot. Then forcing guests or users not logged in to use list view.
