Metal and Crystal Storage is very important later on in the game, when you churn out a lot of resources. For example, in my Universe 5 account one of my colonies produces 15,000 metal and 8,000 crystal an hour. Without upgrading metal storage, it stops mining after it hits 100,000 metal (the base storage level).

I got fleetcrashed in Uni 5, but before I had 15 battleships, 25 cruisers, 50 light fighters, 10 large cargo ships, 25 missile launchers, 25 small lasers, 15 heavy lasers, 5 gauss cannons, 5 ion cannons, small and large shield domes.

lmfao me and my friends just launched a cordinated attack upon our stupid friends, apparently at like at the last minute they managed to get a bigger fleet to their main planet and we got owned pretty bad lol I'm not sure what happened to the second group, I need to ask!

Energy provides... energy... for your mines. If you consume more than you produce, then your mines will mine at reduced rates. You don't want a surplus persay, but you need one if you want to upgrade your mining facilities. Power affects mining facilities and mining facilities only, so everything else, i.e. robotic factories, shipyards, etc. don't require power from your solar plant, fusion plant, or solar satellites.

Pretty much, if your loaded with metal and you cant stock up any more, shut down ur mines so your not wasting unused energy for your other mines that may require it.

no clue... I just had the tech and the money so I built them lol. I would say right before you leave the protection of the 5000 limit. Where the higher ups can't attack you if your under 5000 rank or w/e. Save up money and right before... build a huge fleet.
