*sigh* Empty debates about religion often start flame wars.

Just believe whatever the hell you want and shut up about it. closedeyes.gif

BLEH!
My dads athiest.
My moms christian.
Im more or less christian.
I dont take history at face value becuase, someone coulda changed it in hte books to fit their needs. History isnt always what happened, its what was written down and remebered. (the last was more opninion that fact)

Ionno.
I cuss, my christian friends say "too much"
Ive never really read more than about half a page outa the bible (most of it was footnotes)
I'm not really all that big on the religion subject.

okay...this is what I believe, and i hope this answers your questions, Nozomu. What I believe is not deep, it is rather simple and easily understood. Well, by me. Anyways, I agree with evolipel, and I'd rather not turn this into a flame war.

A do not have a religon, I have a faith. Faith is different from religons as you put yourself entirely in someone else's hands. I put my life in Jesus and God. God said that Jesus was his son, so out of my faith, I believe him.

The Bible is there for interpretation. Some events in it have nothing to do with humans today, and somethings we cannot relate to. It is there for us to take what we can and apply when we can.

It is my understanding that Jesus did not go to heaven. He went through hell so that we did not have to. Now he is back on earth to be our buddy.

Faith does not have to be logical, or else it would be a religon. Religon is based on logic, and faith is based on trust.

Eh...that's all i can think of right now...JESUS IS MY BUDDY! biggrin.gif

Valahan: yay! Another christian who cusses! I try not to...

Apparently, this means I'm going to Hell (or so I've been told by many, many Christians).

sorry, I think you are going to hell. pinch.gif

QUOTE
Tell me, do you have to believe that Christ is the savior to be a Christian, or do you just have to follow his teachings?

I believe he is my savior, yes.

QUOTE
What if I want to follow other people, too, at the same time? Christ wasn't the only man with bright ideas. The Bhuddist teachings of self-enlightenment are just as valid. They share many of the same concepts, except they focus on the individual, and not the whole.

Its hard to serve two masters. Theres a parable somewhere about that...

QUOTE
What if I don't want to follow anybody, and want to just live my life loving other people without the need of a savior or higher power? Just because Christ thought of it before me doesn't mean I should prostrate myself and beg forgiveness for something I never did.

okay, you can do that. but you'll go to hell. pinch.gif or maybe limbo, I haven't decided yet if that's real or not.

edit: eh, this is what I think. The ideas are offensive, sorry. I try not to offend people, but its hard...

Okay, here are two questions for you:
  • if two people were to live life. One believing in God, and believing that Jesus was the son of God, yet not applying the lessons taught in scripture to his life. The other not believing in God, nor believing that Jesus was the son of God, but a morally sound person. If the second person acts more like Jesus/follows more of the rules set forth in the Bible, do you think he deserves to go to hell? Where should the first person go, according to your beliefs?
  • Don't you think that the concept of hell - a place where people are punished for their wrong-doings - contradicts the concept of an all-loving, all-forgiving, and unconditionally-loving God? Post-modern Christianity presents a God who loves without question, who forgives without question. A God who said he wouldn't punish humankind after the supposed 'flood' (The Noah's arc story).

Well, I'm athiest, I belive religions are useful for shaping someone into a good person. Teaching them good morals and such. But, if you've been going to church, are stressful, angry, and unhappy, I see no need to go if nothing is coming out of it. I don't go to church, yet my father makes me a attend a type of Sunday School-esque program at the church on Mondays. Do I go to feel spiritual? No. Do I leave feeling better about myself? No. I go to please my father and I come out relieved that I don't have to attend another session for seven days. As I enter boredom ensues with a class full of 10 other 13-year olds, all silent. If people start wispering we then have to endure a 15 minute speech on being respectful by our rather bitter (I think) middle-aged teacher, whom I think is wasting a good part of his life. Am I athiest because of this? No, I know that not all Christians are this way. I'm athiest because I just prefer science. I don't really think of myself as a religious person. I think of myself as an open minded observer.

I am Christian, and I believe in god, and I believe that Jesus is Son of God.
Yes I do go to church [ Bit Boring, meh ], I always fall asleep where the person that stands untop of that stuff, i dunno how to call it- where he speaks for damn freaking 2 hours [ seems like one ]. But i think cookies there are useless mad.gif

* You: Those Corruptors: I don't think anyone can corrupt anyone - Yes Drugs Corrupt peoples - SiLeNT(U) May Corrupt People with his Uber Corrupting Religion of Allah!, Evil! - Iam just kidding about the SiLeNT(U) Comment.

US Law clearly states that anyone can believe in what they want.
All Freedom Country Clearly states that anyone can believe in what they want.

- Do not insult god, Jesus -
Do you think you might know?. Well, Some people think they were born from monkey. - IF I WAS BORN FROM MONKEY, I'D GO SUICIDE MY SELF RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW - No, we weren't.

Scientists can believe what they want. - Stupid Evolving Theory
I hear comments about "Well, Everytime you curse, You need to pray, or he'll make us go to hell" Well, You can go creative on that one.

I believe that all things in bible that teachs, is a good influence " Very Good "

Well, the Bible states that God Created Us, So thats why he's loving us.
and that might go aswell creative there.

Bingo...
Im sure a few of us believe that religion is more for our self and soul then for the actual worship of a god. The reason i follow parts of the religions i do is for the soul purpose of reaching a higher level of my self being. To know your and understand your soul. When understand more about who you are and who you are inside then you can understand more beyond yourself. To be enlightened about your self leaves almost leaves you with any answer to any question you had about yourself. Its something difficult to completely explain but i just believe people should look at religion as a way of impriving themself spiritually rather then as a awy or life or worship.

As I said once before, God is not always in a good mood. Sometimes people piss him off, so he turns them to salt or burninates their cities. This is a common misconception of the christian God. Yes, he is love, he is forgiveness, but he is also wrathful. VERY wrathful.

Believing in something that doesn't exist... If I don't see it, I don't believe it. Besides, it's quite impossible to be "ruled over" by some 'thing'. People go to church and crap and they teach religion... the Bible is a god damn fiction story! People back then would believe everything so they wrote the bible and said it was true. It really isn't. The End. Miracles are coincidences.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-06-06 at 14:19:02
Its obvious that certain people would say something like what Deathknight is saying... most would reply with a saying that he needs to have a more open mind to how the world really is... i more then 3/4 of the world believe in some form of religion. Personally i think people who take it that religious people are people who strictly follow the bible or follow a god for guidance or whatever... only to worship... are te kind of people who have a narrow mind, someone who cant see past what religions soul purpose is. Sure christians believe in Jesus.. but if you look past the fact they stand him as a god an the fact people worship him... look at the morals he taught... Selflessness... how to become a better person... religion isnt just the bible.. and worshiping your god... but more or less follow by example. In Buddhism you are taught to follow without desire... because through desire is suffering. By following Buddha and the examples set by the religion you are taught to live life without havind desire... and through that you become more enlightened about yourself and life.

Now im not trying to flame anyone by saying they are narrow minded im just trying to tell them that an open mind is a healthy mind. Religion isnt here just to make us worship an idealistic deity but to follow examples set by the religion to become better people not only to other but to ourselves, to gain knowledge, and live spiritual lives.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Nozomu on 2004-06-06 at 15:08:17
That depends on what your definition of an open or closed mind is. I go by what seems probable or logical. It just seems like a lot of people just disregard logic when they talk about religion. Call me close-minded if you want, but believing in magic and fairies and creationism seems to just be wishful thinking. Like people want it to be that way so bad that they prevent themselves from reasoning it out.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-06-06 at 15:34:02
Well open minded in the fact of willing to understand and believe other aspects of life and religion like you have stated before... you dont nessicarly have to understand and believe it... but your willing to listen and take in the different kinds of thoughts. Instead of closing off and saying its nonsense! there no such things, the bible is a fairy tale, and religion is a joke.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Dark Templar on 2004-06-06 at 19:28:54
I was rasied to believe in whatever I wanted, my parents never forced me to go to church or believe in whatever deity. I have taken a few classes on religion, and I sill remain a person without a formal religion. I strongly believe in evolution ,but not in God. And that people can practice whatever religion they wish. I agree with cerain aspects of some religions and disagree with others. But religion has never done anything good for the world, just isolate groups of people, cause wars, death, and suffering. Some religions see themselves better than others, and try and destroy their "enemies". People can interperate their holy text however they want, some can get good things from things such as the bible, and others can just develop malice.

True, very true.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-06-06 at 20:05:59
In some cases yes that is true... but those are the ones who take the beliefs to an extreme... hence the Hardcore people who follow it as more then a way of improving yourself but as worshiping the god, shuning any religion that doesnt fit with there own and all that kind of stuff.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Nozomu on 2004-06-06 at 20:08:19
I don't have a problem with religious people, either, unless they do one of several things:

1. Try to convert me. I know that they're trying to save me and all, but I don't need salvation and I certainly don't need to be told how to live my life.
2. Quote the Bible or Koran, as if they hold some mystical authority. They were written millenia ago, by people we know nothing about. We don't know how soon they recorded their experiences after they had them. We don't know how much of a slant was given to the story by each person's interpretation. We don't know if the concepts have survived translation. We don't know if the concepts mean the same things now as they did thousands of years ago. We can't verify the accuracy of anything said in these books. Now, I'm not saying that they're works of complete fiction. I'm just saying that there is no reason at all to assume that these books hold any credibility.
3. Start killing people under the guise of "righteousness". Every religion preaches peace, huh? Sure. I'll believe it when I see it.
4. Not consider other points of view. I've tried to think about religion, but I always come to the conclusion that it's self-indulgent crap (God made man is his own image?). If someone tells me some idea that I haven't heard before, I'll certainly consider it and listen to them intently. Of course, many of those same people would condemn me to eternal torment if I ever tried to explain the benefits of atheism.

If they can stop themselves from doing that, then there's absolutely no problems on this end. Hell, I'd probably join one.

Thats exactly how i believe. In the past ive had a girlfriend whos mother was a hardcore christian, she believed that any of religion was a sin to believe in (BS). Then at dinner she braught up the topic of religion and asked me if i followed christanity... Needless to say I answered that i dont really follow any religion but i do practice a lot from Buddhism... She didnt really like that answer but she didnt go nuts on me... instead she calmly said that Buddhism was crap and Christianty was the answer to everything....... heh... those people are kind of funny...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kame on 2004-06-06 at 20:14:48
do you know how hard it would be to join a religon like that nozomu? I'm trying to think of the different religons my friends are involved in (I've tried to hang out with them and their friend of the same faith) and from what I hear...there is not one religon like that. religon is what you make it.

I wouldnt say we are to religious considering most of us dont even believe in a god. Try to understand that its not nessicarly the belief that we follow but the practice. Open your eyes and read what we are saying dont just assume we are all a bunch of religious freaks who worship god with all our hearts... when half wouldnt even look toward a god.

Im not trying to flame anyone by saying this but you shouldnt call religion crap aster unless your prepared to offend a lot of people... word of advice... im sure no one here really cares... but its not something you should go around saying
