Since no one mentioned it, (And because I'm good with easy software as opposed to hardware)

1: Make sure you get good speakers, I've had problems where they suddenly die, don't work, ect.

2: Get a decent mouse. If you're like me, after a couple of years the left button will stop working as well, so get a more hardy mouse. One with a scroll wheel is a godsend

3: keyboard
Get one that can do what you need.

4: Printers
Don;t get. Unless you like printing porn or something, what use is a printer in starcraft?

Keyboards and mice and such like that are better found at your local electronics store where you can barter the price and buy preopened. I got my wireless keyboard and wirless optical mouse (teh pwns) from Fry's preopened for $33.30

You'll need something to power it, preferrably a power supply happy.gif

GeForce 7800GTX is really overkill when (a) you'e got a crappy RAM situation and (b) you have an SLI motherboard. You might was well get a 7800GT or weaker 256 meg graphics card and get a second one when the need comes - SLI is teh pwnz. And always, always go for the RAM in the least number of cards. Note it's my opinion SATA2 on a HD isn't a big deal, who cares how fast you can read and write to your hard drive?

Let me newegg-link my design for further comment.

Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 - $49.99
Power Supply: ASPIRE ATX 500-watt Power Supply - $39.99
Optical Drive 1: ASUS 16x DVD +/-RW Drive - $46.99
Optical Drive 2: LITE-ON CD/DVD-ROM Drive - $20.99
Media Drive*: Koutech 10-in-1 Multimedia Drive - $26.50
Motherboard: ASUS A8N5X Motherboard - $83.99
Main CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego Core 939-pin Processor - $334.00
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - 200GB - $122.00
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (1GBx2) DDR400 184-pin RAM - $163.50
GPU: eVGA 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT - $294.00
Monitor: BenQ Black 19" 8ms LCD Display - $299.99
Speakers: Logitech Black 5-watt Desktop Speakers - $7.00
Headset: Logitech PC Gaming Headset - $12.95

Total: $1500.90

Plus: Operating System (my current XP Home is from Dell, yay... so I expect it will only run on a Dell), Shipping
Minus: I didn't bother tallying in NewEgg Mail-In Rebates (there's like at least $100 of them in there somewhere).

*It's only $20 more than an average floppy drive and it's nice to be able ot plug Game Boy cartriges into your computer happy.gif

Hmm, I skimped on sound, but I never really gave a damn about sound quality. Comments?

To think of it... I won't need a floppy drive. I sill have access to one, and I haven't used the one the computer I'm on now in about 3 years...

Oh yeah, power supply... Might help if I want to turn it on... Any suggestions?

I still suggest a floppy drive, they're $6 and so many system utilities and such want you to make backup floppies.

If you're going for a fat graphics card, you'll need a high-wattage power supply, 500W is always nice. They range from $30 to maybe $120. Be sure the pins on your supply match up with the pins on your MB, a lot of fancy MBs have 24-pin power cords and most power supplies have 20-pin cords.

I'll keep that in mind.

Go patrol trash piles near business districts. It works better than I imagined. wink.gif
Basically, people throw out their old computer when they get a new one, and they throwout anything that doesn't work properly. I have so much space on my comp because of stuff other people didn't want.

The 20 pin 24 pin PSU stuff is all a hoax. Firstly they sell adapters for like 10 dollars, secondly you can just plug in the 20 pin PSU into a 24pin mobo, my cousin did it on his A8n-sli. Just plug it in with the way it fits, leaving 4 pins empty.

Now make sure your PSU supports PFC (power factor control) and short circuit protection, you dont want your sweet system to all burn because of a crappy PSU.

get the fat gfx card IMO. Getting 1 fat 7800 GTX right now, then years down the track when 7800gtx becomes dirt cheap stick another one in. IMO 7800GTX> 7800 GT SLI. SLI is only good for running games at high resolution, it hardly improves FPS on normal resolutions. When you got a 7800 GTX it will do better with normal resolutions.

my friend is relying on a crappy 1mb gfx card used for ancient vga comps to run his 3800+ amd 64 server computer, he has yet to buy his 7800GTX LOL.
