Wow, a buffer overflow, is it a virus? No.

If it isn't a real wav file, then Starcraft won't read it. I'm not goign to go read them long mushy posts of yours just to know how to "make a virus" in a map... oh damn, we just told all the newbies!!

Wrong!! If the overflow contains malicious code, I believe it's called a virus.

Also the buffer overflow does not nessesarly have to be an extra file (wav?) in the mpq, it can be stored in the chk file itself. Finally, what you said about starcraft not reading anything that isn't a wav file... well you see, specially prepared code doesn't advertise itself as some abomination in the file being exploited.. it would obviously look exactly the same.... to startcraft at least.

Hypothetically of course.

Yeah, from what I can tell the hypothetical idea is that you can use the "disable doodad state" trigger and other unit modifiers to basically write your own code in the section after the map's units are listed or something.

Thats a lot of effort just to be evil, which could be spent helping old ladies cross the road in safety!

Sorry synd][cate, but I'm not really a hacker. I've never seen a "virus" in a Starcraft map... and I don't think a "virus" can be executed through a Starcraft map.

Just sifting through my apache logs and you always see drones randomly checking webservers that could potentially be hacked... like this one here.. this is a real-life example of a buffer overflow exploit:

pcp03957350pcs.sarast01.fl.comcast.net - - [30/Aug/2004:05:37:24 -0600] "GET /default.ida?XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX%u9090%u6858%ucbd3%u7801%u9090%u6858%ucbd3%u7801%u9090%u6858%ucbd3%u7801%u9090%u9090%u8190%u00c3%u0003%u8b00%u531b%u53ff%u0078%u0000%u00=a HTTP/1.0" 404 286 "-" "-"

I would tend to agree with most people that there is a slim chance of any unlocked doors waiting to be opened.. but I'm sure if you spend enough time with a program ... things that would normally not be possible some how make themselves reality.

You cannot get viruses from Starcraft Maps. Period.
