It's so strange how it seems to be popular in America to say you're half Irish/Scottish etc.
I mean, it's not like you've ever been there or even know where the countries are half of the time (believe me, I've spoken to some very ignorant people).
Usually there's just a vague idea of where the country is or what its like there. Something very general like 'They drink a lot of beer' or 'They were persecuted by the British' seem to be popular mentions.
I could say that I'm 1/16 Moroccan, 1/2 English and the rest Irish if I wanted to, because I have ancestors of that descent. I consider myself English though.

I'm not trying to be picky, but it's just crazy that you could consider yourself of another nationality because it's fashionable and your great uncle twice-removed came over during the Irish Potato Famine of 1845. I've noticed a lot of other British people getting annoyed about this on other forums (Why do British people dislike Americans? is a good example if it's the correct thread) - especially the ubiquitous 'British persecution' spiel. I ended up having a massive argument with an American friend over the Irish question.

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-10-07 at 22:19:16
1- french: We have to keep our Origin, Keeping our Culture, and mostly our language!

2- English: Only because English is the international language that you have to use if you are in "business"
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MindArchon on 2004-10-07 at 22:36:25
English is used everywhere. Its the dominant language in science, and all airplane reports (no matter where) are in English. Its the language to learn.

French Canadians seem to get really worked up over the English/French issues in Canada.

Just remember that the English sailed to Canada before France. John Cabot preceded Jacques Cartier by a considerable length of time.

It was also your own damned fault for losing Canada to the British in the 1700s - you kept attacking our borders, so in the end we just got seriously pissed off and took over the country. 1763, I believe, was the year of the loss of 'New France.'

Also, if we hadn't been so lenient, the 60,000 French speakers living in Canada at the time of takeover would have been ruthlessly repressed for being Catholics. In fact, there would be no French speakers at all in Canada.

It is good in some ways that Canada is bilingual and multicultural, as it can encourage co-operation between nations.

It's also worth noting (although this is unrelated really) that Canada has defeated the USA militarily, forcing a peace treaty.

Oh so now it's our people's "own damn fault" if some guy made some strategical faults 300 years ago?...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2004-10-08 at 12:45:49
Of course it is. Not your fault personally - but it was the arrogance of the French in Canada that brought about their downfall. I mean, attacking the Thirteen Colonies - surely that is going to provoke a pretty heavy response?

I'm not entirely sure that all that arrogance is gone even today, what with the Académie Francaise trying to make French people say 'Ouikend' instead of 'Weekend,' to 'preserve the purity of the French language.' What on Earth is all that about? It's not like we try to 'preserve the purity' of our language - we happily borrow foreign words and coin new ones all the time without moaning too much at them 'diluting' our language.

Yep, And in 1700, we were requesting France Armies to supply our troops... They dind't accept because they were in fight with the Germany... (i'm not sure it was Germany) And the English were been supported by the British...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2004-10-08 at 13:14:44
The English and the British happen to be synonomous, especially at the time you mentioned, as it was the beginnings of the British Empire.

Britain is an island. England, Wales and Scotland are countries that make up Britain.

Great Britain is the political entity made up of the above countries.

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland make up the:
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK)

Oh, and Germany didn't exist in the 1700s.
