So you make up definitions in place of real ones to make yourself feel good? =-O
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-08-12 at 14:04:42
Ummm no. As I said, they're just how my friends use those terms.

When I say dork, I don't mean whale... tallywhack.

Did you say that just to give yourself a little kick?

Who really cares what other people call you. I think of myself first a gamer, then maybe geek or nerd, but first I like to game. Who cares if I tell warhammer that hi so called "life" he uses as an excuse to log off b.net is non-existant, he'd probably laugh at me and then tell me how he found some mushrooms in another room of the house and is about to eat them...

Like another idiot friend of mine.

Kotor[life] went to sea world, and he and his friends ended a binge on alchohol without their pants on, and he's proud of it, somehow. He doesn't care if i call him a, dork, dweeb, dunderhead, moron, idiot, bum, haha sucker, or anything else.

Everyone has their own meaning of "Geek". What I'm saying, is that you like to play games, possibily do highly technical things, you're a critical thinker, and likely would rather spend your time playing LAN starcraft with your friends then most other things.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chef on 2005-08-12 at 17:01:26
I prefer to use the actual definitions for words so I don't develop an entirly new dialect and piss people off. I'd rather be out drinking and playing pool than playing a lan StarCraft =/ StarCraft is just less expensive so I can do it more often.

I hate it when new dialects screw up my definition of words, I end up sounding like an idiot.

EDIT: Part of this post was found offensive, namely regarding the use of QED. I'm sincerely sorry to those who it upset. I only meant to show an example of another word/phrase that has been warped. A much better example would be those who use lol thinking it's just some gesture, and don't actually know what it means (as such, it results in many people not actually laughing out loud, but thinking something is 'mildly funny'). It was not meant as an attack on someone's culture/race.

You mean kinda like what Trig was pointing out in the Misconceptions thread?

If you define geek by "someone who plays videogames" or "someone who goes on internet forums", then most guys are geeks. I don't know any guy who doesn't do one of those two. Most girls play games (calculator games), but not very much, and the number of girls are on internet forums is even smaller (and it's probably best never to say you're a girl).

Not quite true in my experience.
At school, when we go to the computer lab for whatever reason and we happen to have a small amount of free-time, I've noticed that a good many of the females there go to forums.
And, though this isn't really the best evidence ever, since you can lie so easily on the internet, I've seen just as many people claim to be female as male on non-gaming forums.

I almost did something geeky today. My music teacher yelled at us "How much of what I just said was in Latin?" and if he wasn't so angry I would've pointed out that latin was a written language, not a spoken. Nerrrr.

I never really heard of QED so I don't take offense to it because I don't know what's wrong with it, oh well.

Im definately a Geek, but not as dedicated as most of my peers would like to think.

I have school everyday, and we have recess and lunchtime where we play Bolt and downball, each requires physical assertion so i guess that counts as excercise. doesnt it! DOESNT IT!

I have many friends outside of school, which someone said (the opposite) before.

My computer died about 5 weeks ago, and i thought it would be hell, but i managed to play outside (a bit) and survive on Paint fumes and xbox.

the only problem being, now i have a new computer 4x as fast, so it begins again..

I think, there are 2 types of Geek:

Geek a) A gamer oriented Geek, one who knows nothing of code nor are interested in learning about it. they still post on forums and look around for thier fave games.

Geek b) The hardcore Geek, who spends his time online (not all of it) trying to learn new things, which in the long term leads to a succesful career (at times) This type often still games.

I think thats the main thing, learning things on the net, why just last week i learnt i: bytes are electrons read a certain way (so a computer is basically based on electrons) ii: about proccesors (ie: the way they work) iii: about multi-core processors (ie: ermm... more than 1?) iv: Roman numerals!! v: see i can go to 5!! OMFG!! vi: actually im just showing off with those last three, and i learnt them a good 4 years ago smile.gif

I wouldnt say everyone here is a geek but a good handful is. im not a geek ~ my idea of a party isnt reading dictionary... i also am not in love with my computer..i do plenty of sports (football, baseball, crosscountry, track, basketball i used to do all of these now i only do cross country and track besides playing the other ones with my friends) so isn't it more having great(decent) intelligence than being a geek? sure i like to go on my computer but that doesnt make me a geek.

I've read a dictionary at a party before, don't stare at me.....
That was an execption, really, the party sucked closedeyes.gif
I would definitly classify myself as a geek, although I'm lucky enough to be considered useful by my classmates and thus am subject to little taunting (whew, did that sentence make ANY sense at all?)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kow on 2005-08-15 at 21:29:57
I totally understand. Becuase I have a tendancy to retain definitions and just plain information, I rarely take notes, but anyway, People call me 'The walking dictionary', which is quite annoying. (Most all of my friends are blondes). But anyway, It usually leads to some form of taunting or another.
