update on my description:

Your population density of 18.10 population per mile is at a good level at this time. Your military of 26 soldiers is considered adequate strength for the size of ATONAT. The infrastructure of ATONAT is adequate at the time with a level of 1.56.

My population has a happyness of 8.54 now. Should i buy infrastructure now? or technology? add me to the member list if you haven't already please.

It says they are happy with the government but they want a religion that is
"Your people approve of this national religion but the majority of your people would prefer something else. They believe in the conjuring of dead spirits and desire a national religion that supports this. " voodoo i presume blink.gif?

Buy infrastructure but make sure you have enough troops to keep order (if it says that there's rioting then buy more soldiers). You're right about Voodoo - change your religion to that in 3 days time when the game allows you to. I'll send you some aid tomorrow when I have the money. For now, use DEAD/Gigins' aid money to buy infrastructure.

Tomorrow, when you go to collect taxes, set your tax rate to 28% and then collect it. Afterwards reset it to 16% to keep the population happy.

You mean back to 10%, right? And also, buy some land so you don't get overpopulation.

16% incurs no happiness penalty either.

18.10 population per mile is excellent, and in fact he likely doesn't need to buy land again for a few weeks.

This is something I wrote when I was IGC finance minister. I don't see any harm posting it here as it is always nice to gain perspectives from other players on how to play the game. Reading it again makes me realise how far my nation has come since then and how many of these things do not apply, or apply to a far lesser extent, once you get over 1000 infra. So here it is:

Let me preface by saying that this guide is by no means intended to be provide a detailed answer to every decision you will face in running your nation. Instead, it is intended to provide a general strategy to maximise the long term growth of your nation, right from Day One through to Number One (hopefully).

First Steps, Or, Infra, Infra, Infra….
Every great nation in the cyberverse is built on a solid foundation of Infrastructure. Take great heed of this; Infra is your main focus for the entirety of your early game, it is the only way for your nation to increase its income. As such, it should consume the bulk of your daily earnings.

Land should only be purchased to keep it at a level of at slightly over half of your total infra level. Anything over this is only money tied up in ‘false strength’ and moreover could be invested in infra. Excessive land purchase should be avoided.

Military expenses are a liability and should also be avoided where possible. Soldiers should only be purchased to remain at a level slightly over 20% of your citizen count. Anything much greater than this merely accumulates unwanted military bills and is money you could be spending on infra. Tanks and Cruise Missiles should be avoided outright as they serve no purpose during peace time.

Tech should also be avoided until your nation is well established. As it is a fairly complicated aspect of the game, strategy wise, I have devoted a whole section (below) to discussing it.

Trade Agreements should be secured quickly and, where possible, with other nations on the green team. This will ensure that you recieve the same team happiness bonus that you get for trading with nations on your team. In light of this, if you find a likely trade partner from another team you may want to consider briefly changing team color to you chosen trade pertner, propose the trade and then, once it is accepted, change back to green. Information on trade agreements and the benefits of resources can be found in plentiful amounts on the CN forums. Basically, aim for those that increase you income or citizen count and those that decrease expenses.

Following this strategy you will soon reach 20 levels of infra and will notice the price begins to increase. Do not be deterred, continue with your policy. Remember, infra is the only sustainable way for your nation to grow. Once you reach this stage it is important (where possible) to begin buying infra in amounts of between 5 and 10 levels at a time. This is to counter the effects of the growing cost. My personal policy is when I cannot afford a purchase of at least 8 levels to save infra purchases for the next day when I can make a larger purchase allowing me to buy the infra at a cheaper level than what is otherwise possible. Such a strategy requires discipline but pays of in the long term.

Concerning Tech
It is important that nations do not prematurely begin purchasing tech which provides little economic return early in the game. The aim of every nation should be to buy tech only when it becomes economically viable (relative to the purchasing of infra). Accordingly, Tech should be absolutely avoided until your nation earns a minimum of 5K a day. When you reach this threshold you should buy the smallest possible fraction (around 1K worth). This will boost your happiness by one level providing your nation with extra taxable income. Once this is done, return to buying infra till your nation earns enough in one day to push your nation over the 1 tech level (around 12K). This will boost your nation happiness by a further two levels and provide sound economic results. Again, return to buying infra until your daily nation income builds up to level where you can reach tech level 3 with ease. Again, this provides you with another happiness level. Your next goals are to reach tech levels 6, 10 and 15 applying the same tactic of alternating between tech and infra. Once you reach level 15, tech now only provides .02 happiness per level, a virtually miniscule amount. Fear not, for those nations trading in uranium (which should be everyone except thos with nuclear weapons) you will receive an extra 15 cents per citizen per level.

Concerning Improvements
Improvements become available once your nation has a population of over 1,000 citizens. Every 1,000 citizens allow you to acquire another improvement. All nations are encouraged to purchase improvements as soon as they can as they provide benefits far in excess of their cost (The only exception to this rule is your first purchase which is most profitable to buy around 1,500 civies).
The first improvement for your rapidly growing nation should be a harbour, which allows your nation to trade with another nation for access to two extra resources and, in addition, provides a small income boost.
However, your next improvement is a far more difficult decision. The most beneficial fluctuates between nations and depends on your trades, tax rate, events, how often you give aid, what you spend your taxes on, and the likelihood of war. In essence you can choose between income generating improvements (Banks, income +8) or expense decreasing improvements (Factories, infra -12%). The most reliable method to find the best choice is to do the maths each time. To add some perspective, most nations go for 5 Factories then move on to Banks, Stadium and other income increasing improvements. Yet, this decision, like any other, largely depends on how you want to play the game.

"The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax." - Albert Einstein

While this may be true in the real world, fortunately taxes in CN are fairly straight forward. Here's a simple guide to ensuring you get the most bang for your citizen's buck.

Currently, taxes affect population happiness as follows:
10%-16% gives +0 happiness
17%-20% gives -1 happiness
21%-23% gives -3 happiness
24%-25% gives -5 happiness
26%-28% gives -7 happiness

The only affect of happiness is to change how much money your citizens earn. (Currently, one point of happiness equates to $2.00 earned per citizen.) Many people don't want to charge a high tax rate because they don't want to anger their citizens. While this is noble, in terms of the game all it does is reduces your government's income, which in turn stunts your growth rate. It also means that it is pointless to raise your tax rate, collect your taxes, and then lower your rate again to make your people happy. In fact, it's rather dishonest to your citizens. Shame on you. disgust.gif

Okay, so given that the effect of happiness is to change your citizen's income, and given that your taxes are directly proportional to that income, figuring out your optimal tax rate becomes a simple min/max calculation. I know what you're thinking... You're thinking "Math!?! crazy.gif Not math! Noooooooo!" Don't worry, I've done all the hard work for you.

Here's what you have to do. First, set your tax rate to 16%. Now look at your "Avg. Gross Income Per Individual Per Day". Got it? Good. On to the handy chart.

If your nation's Avg. Gross Income Per Individual Per Day is:
0.00 - 10.00 set your tax rate to 16%
10.01 - 32.66 leave your tax rate at 20%
32.67 - 50.80 set your tax rate to 23%
50.81 + set your tax rate to 28%

And you're done! See, wasn't that easy! clapping.gif

For all you new nations that aren't at 28% taxes yet, don't forget to advance your tax rate as your Gross Income increases!

(Again I did not make this)

It somewhat depresses me that I have the second oldest nation in the alliance and I may not even be in the top ten strength-wise.

You have been attacked by Limit. You lost 39 soldiers and 0 tanks. You killed 11 soldiers and 0 tanks. Their forces razed 0.210 miles of your land, stole 0.000 technology, and destroyed 0.462 infrastructure. Their forces looted $264.55 from you and you gained $0.00 in your enemy's abandoned equipment. In the end the battle was a Defeat.

I got gg'ed cry.gif and people keep offering me trades, mind explaining how this all works. I don't want to lose my resources to lead and marble, if i trade resources do i produce their resource instead of my lead and marble? or do i still produce lead and marble by my nations default?

About LUE:

It's a very exclusive forum on GameFAQs which I'm (un)lucky enough to be a member of. For some more information about LUE: http://www.hitchhikernet.com/index.php/LUE

There are some amusing episodes in LUE's history, such as 'The Night of a Million Wangs,' but I won't spoil them for you.

And Shocko - damn that's bad luck. Everyone in Limit's strength range is cleared to attack him - he has no alliance affiliation.

Also, make sure you put Staredit Network under alliance affiliation, not nation bio! It's probably why you were attacked.

ADDITION:
Oh, and about the trades - marble is a good resource and lead is pretty poor. Basically, accept all trades you can because it kind of works on a sharing system - you share your resources and they share theirs. It's kind of a win-win situation. At this stage in your nation's history you might want to go for things which will increase the people's happiness (sugar, spice etc.)

LUEnited Nations is LUE's CN alliance. I think they have almost 600 members. Don't worry - I'm not going to defect or anything. I just like their flag because it brings back memories of my childhood...

If we have over 100 members then we can apply on CN for our own flag to be featured.

Edit: Shocko, I don't think we have any members in the right strength range to attack Limit. We can give you troops and money though, to fund your war.
