I have a question concerning the zero unprotection policy, what about maps which origionally were protected, but now have widely circulating rigged/modified/etc... unprotected copies, can those copies be used, or would that fall under unprotection.
I say this because our first planned project, Resident Evil: Raccoon city, was origionally protected (I think), but the copies now circulating on battle.net are not.

I guess those ones are okay.

Yoshi, if unprotected maps are there so popular and every version have a diferent authoer do we have permision to remove it and just put "Fixed by MRS" ?

You always try to find the author first. If you can't, then you are allowed to proceed if it is unprotected regardless. If it is protected, you must leave it the way it is. Alternately, you could remake the map from scrach. It wouldn't be too hard in most cases, and its always more fun to remake the classics.

Okay, you are now allowed to discuss and recruit people with my approval here at SEN.

When you fix up a few maps and submit them to our DLDB, and I verify you're doing a nice and speedy job, I will then consider giving you a forum. Contact me after you finish restoring like 3 maps.

I still think that unprotected map creators have the same right as protected map creators. If they haven't protected their map that doesn't give the rights to steal it just because it's not protected. So there is no difference between protected and unprotected map author’s rights. So it should be taken on MRS. Besides MRS would be idle and unactive because of lack of unprotected map that should be changed. And unprotected maps are being constantly changed. If we fix one of 30 similar maps that actually does no good. That only makes another map that floods our download folder.

Yoshi I really want that you change your strict policy this time. Otherwise MRS will exist only for short time and all our members will deserve us. I will respect your decision if you choose to not support "unprotection" on MRS but this time you are probably wrong.

Ok, lets start working now people, for our first project, Resident evil: Raccoon city, I have created a list of things in need of fixing.
  • Reinforcements are currently buggy, they don't fire after reaching their target location
  • The north acadamy is unsavable because too few troops are spawned at the RPD to take it (Trigger need 3 to come before it fires).
  • Supply cars often get stuck at certain barricades.
  • If we are working from 1.099, the rigged version, it needs to have the rigged units removed
I assumed that we were working either from 1.08, or 1.099.

Protecting maps is known with all map makers. If they wanted people not to touch their maps, they would of had some form of protection. If they didn't, it means they wanted to keep it open source so others can edit it.

Well actually before I spent 1 month on SEN I didn't even heard about protection. Anyway, will you change your policy? If not can we at least discuss MRS stuff on SEN. I say again: MRS can't actually exist without unprotecting.

Hmm, I'd really like to join in on this. Let's see, I have mapping experience, but it's mainly playing around with triggers, units, concepts, etc. - never actually completed a decent map. I can certainly try to fix bugs in maps, I think I can repair most of them in most cases, but of course, I have nothing to show for yet.

I'd love to test if I can't help map - I suck enough to be playing at a regular B.Netter level. Okay, slightly less obnoxious...usually. Since school's starting soon, I'd be online more, so yes, I can help out there.

Now, how about old maps that don't really have bugs, but can really use a remake of sorts? For example, Fleet Command and Gunship are two of my personal favourite maps, but they both can really use a remake. Many maps can be switched from a "move the civilian to the beacon" to a system that is, for a lack of a better term, hotkeyable? Why don't we have a division of MRS people working on remakes of old classics, with the techniques of "modern" mapping, like hyper triggers, and...well...yeah. Of course, these will probably have to be remakes, since I really don't think modifying existing maps to such levels would be wise or acceptable.

Secondly, why not just simply add the letters "MRS" to the end of "restored" maps, as opposed to incrementing version numbers?

More experienced map makers know this, and I think this is what MRS is after. Maps by experienced map makers to edit and improve. Overall, I think it'd be much better if they were "Map Recreation Society", and they remake the older maps instead of looking for unprotected ones. I'd approve of that a LOT more.

Hmm, I'm wondering if it could be redone needing only 2 players per team. I mean, getting 6 players into a game, have them stay and play, is hell. Plus, it could use a bigger map, and a more easily controlled interface, such as using something other than "move the civ" to shoot missiles and stuff. Heck, the ships could all use some balancing, as Valks reign supreme. Maybe something could be done to ease the use of fighters too.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by The_Shattered_moose on 2005-08-18 at 22:06:20
Alternativly, we could make it so that while the crew is not required, they are optional, if there isn't a crew player their stuff can be given the the person flying the battlecruiser.
The "melee" player really could use some more stuff to do as well, seeing as currently all they can really do is mine and make valks for the bc. As for the missile system, I completly agree, it could definitly use some revamping.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SpaceBoy2000 on 2005-08-18 at 23:17:07
Yep, I agree completely. The commander usually sits there the whole time, and then does all the work in the last 10 minutes. The crew is kind of the most "boring" job at all - at least the commander can scout with his one observer.

Here's a few suggestions to improve the map if we decide on a remake:
- Bigger map. More variety in the terrain.
- The "starport" for the BC should have an beacon beside it labeled "loading platform" that sends stuff directly to the BC. Less a reliance on the really really annoying dropship system.
- The SCV to Civilian beacon should be located on ship. Civilians are pointless on the ground. Let the people on the ship deal with training.
- BC mining should be more refined. It's pretty crude in its present state.
- Fighters should be built, not bought. At least, something less crude than a "Civilian and beacon" system

Well remake every map that we find a little buggy would be nonsense. And we can't remake maps so they are bugless. We can get bugs on maps as well as the original creators. Of course we will remake some old maps but our prime objective will still be fixing maps. Besides if a good map is unprotected then most likely it is stolen not unprotected by reason. And by fixing stolen maps we would do even more bad to authors than by unprotecting deserved maps, fixing them and then protecting again.

Yoshi please give us a chance. If we will get complainings from map authors that we have modified(fixed) their maps, then we will probably stop our works. We are not asking for a forum, we just want your approval. Maybe when we will be high in numbers and done some good job then maybe we would need a forum, but not now.

Everybody, if you are willing to join please post here.

Tomorrow we will have our first meeting at channel "op MRS)" we will look over map "_6_Raccoon_City__1.099_" test it a bit and decide who could be the best fixer for this map. Meeting will be at 3 pm by GMT-6.
