By downloading games we advertize them. This is a profit for the company. But by downloading games we allso take away their profit.

It's the economist's time to calculate now - what is "bigger" - the profit or the loss.

Yes, but if a company wants to advertise games by having people download them, they will let you.

When it comes to the economists calculations, that's not us, its the company that made the game. If they figure their profits from "advertising" are greater, they'll let you download.

QUOTE(7-7)
I dont see how downloading games could be a bad thing, yes it is free but it would make your product be used worldwide, then just make another game and not allow it to be downloaded online for like the first couple months of selling it, tons of people will buy it and use it then put it online, this would work because it would be like advertisement!

Same goes for that, if the company wants to advertise it, they'll let you download it legally (like Sierra did with Tribes 1 and 2 before launching Tribes Vengeance for example).

They don't let people download it online, people do this illegally. Do you think companies want us download their games? -_-

If 100 people were to download a discography, about 4~10 CDs. It would cost them 6000$ ~ 15000$ loss.

IF you made the outrageous claim that everyone who downloads a CD would have bought it otherwise. This just isn't true. Believing it were true, would be incredibly naive. Without knowing how many people actually would have bought the CD, and how many people buy the CD because they liked the stuff they downloaded, that statistic is void and can prove nothing. For all you know, they could be selling more CDs!

^ That was devil's advocate. There was weakness in your point I felt needs A LOT of strengthening if you plan to convince your opponent. So either scrap it, or learn how to read the minds of a couple 100,000 million people =P

Well in my opionion downloading games is wrong but that still isnt the fact that the game market loses money. For example. You own a gba game. You lost it but you download the same version. It could be stealing cause your using it for pleasure but at the same time you already had purchased one before. But look. If people were to worry about the game market then look at the music industry. Downloading music is like 60% greater then before because people dont give a doo,doo they just want it and then it becomes stealing. Well all I can say is that nintendo is trying to avoid such problem by making that wiiconnect server so people download games. Will it work? I'm not sure.

So downloading a backup after you lose a copy is OK... why? It isn't your fault for losing the game? I don't get another twenty dollar bill if I drop one in the sewer and don't realize until I get home.

Because when you buy a game, you're not buying the physical disc. That disc costs pennies to make. What you're paying for is the right to play that game.

Its intellectual property, not real property you're paying for.

Similarly, when you lose your bank card, do you simply open a new bank account and figure, "well, I guess I've lost the money I had in there"?

No, because that bank card is simply a convenient method to using the service you pay for with your bank.

A disc is simply a convenient method to retrieve the service you paid for when purchasing the game.
