Whatever you do, don't make this map anything like DotA. That will ruin it completely, making it a cheap copy of DotA.

Thanks for the missile test, though. But believe me, you haven't seen the real map yet. Even still, it's far from perfect, though.

Progress Report: Got my page long checklist of tweaks and fixes polished off. Almost. The spawners are now giving me trouble, as thanks to Starcraft's loving pathfinding AI I'm having to babysit the units to reach their destination. Again making me wish I'd done this map horizontally. disgust.gif Oh well. I'll manage.

Other than that, I've finished adding in a new way to move mechs in mobile mode to circumvent that annoying drag. By double selecting mobile mode in your menu, you can toggle a "pointer" unit that your mech cockpit follows (despite drag). This unit has a limited range it can move from the cockpit itself, but within that range it can move free of drag. I'm trying to manage a way to make it both cloaked and blinded, so that it won't be of any real scouting or diversionary use.

The sad part is, I really don't think this will gain much popularity on battle.net

I mean, after all of the strides map makers have made to take it to the next level, people still prefer playing Golems, Madness, Simplified Defense, and RP all of the time as opposed to the greater stuff available.

Most people want populariy, Others dont. Rather make complex map which he/she will enjoy, not always what public wants. Not our fault public stupid and cant work out complex maps and rather play basic maps.

Someone should change that. And also, I've seen lately that people are getting bored with madnesses, golems and defences. RPs are not much out there anyways. Yesterday evening I even saw a guy on B.net playing Labyrinthos RPG.

Look, RE: One by Bioject is complex right? But I see it just about every other 4 times I look for a game to play. Complex systems and people still love it.

Just, as long as the fun factor is good, it'll spread. Then you'll get your fan club and a clan that dies for your map. You know how it works.

Dude I made a map once (Good ol' Zombie Outpost for people who knew about it XDD), and this clan (all 20 of em) wouldnt stop trying to beat it.

And this map is easy enough to handle, trust me. So when do we get to test again? :D

Actually I DO want to make this for the pubbies, but under a certain condition: That it's doing something fundamentally new. I just refuse to make an ordinary map, frankly, but ultimately I want a map that in spite of being extradordinary is still something people like. Of course, trying to be different and appealing to people (who usually only appreciate what they can associate with) is probably a doomed quest from the start, but hey I'm not here to win any popularity contests.

However, I've realized merely doing something technically or conceptually advanced doesn't necessarily make it good (no matter how hard you worked on it). That's why I'm pushing real hard to do it right, which is why I'm trying to simplify and friendlify (new word?) a lot of the design and interface lately (though not necessarily the gameplay), as well as balance the crap out of it. That of course is not yet done, so a lot of what you guys have seen thus far has appeared pretty rough.



Anyway, as for testing, I'm struggling to get my checklist done by the end of this week, which I might be able to do if I put on some extra speed. I'll be sending out a PM for a date, when I'm ready, and we'll meet then. I hope to do one last planning/brainstorm session then too, which'll help me finalize the plan that I have now.

I'll take that risk. If I don't aim to make this something for people to play, then chances are that's exactly how it won't end up. I'm tired of playing it safe with conceptual/experimental stuff.


Progress Report: Anyway, I just had a major power outage in my area, which is still going actually (you probably heard about it on the news if you live anywhere near the northwest). disgust.gif Therefore, I've been severely set back on my intended progress. HOPEFULLY I can still get this completed by my end of the year deadline, but I'm not counting on it anymore. Sorry for the wait on the update.

Well I can't. I'm overdue as is. I'll be doing some heavy work on it throughout the week, which might include some sporadic feature testing. I'm entering a new territory now where I'll be adding in some of the 'fun' stuff, so the polish should go through the roof pretty soon. I think you'll like it. biggrin.gif
