The ion cannons attack shouldnt be seen going through the map. It attacks in the atmosphere otherwise the range would be phyisically imposslbe on a round planet. it would have to arch in space which would be like a nuke. The beam would go so far and disapear then wait a little while and come down close the the enemy. Im not sure this is possible though...

exactly that's what i was talking about when i made my super mega duper holy beam that was actually falling from the sky and not travelling around the map however if the ion cannon will be a short range weapon(which i suggest it should not) the beam could be travelling like that
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Pauper on 2005-12-03 at 00:38:13
Nah, that would look silly, a ion cannon aiming into the sky, a beam comes down and hits someone......
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-12-03 at 02:24:37
its relistic. There would have to be a minimum range of like 35 and the max could be 75 if vision is held for the time needed to aim and fire.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Dr.Shotgun on 2005-12-03 at 08:53:07
If it's falling from the sky, it should resemble a sort of ionic comet rater than a beam.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Corbo(MM) on 2005-12-03 at 11:41:25
hmmm.... what about making it underground tongue.gif making the dirt to look like something its going under it and when it comes to target boom! a mega beam comes from earth and eats it

ADDITION:
lol, ignore that
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-12-03 at 14:16:37
that cant be done with 2D starcraft anyway.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Pauper on 2005-12-05 at 00:02:06
Yeah it can! The spell that removes all shields distorts terrian making it look bulging out. Or displaced. If we make it in a line like that then it will look displaced.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-12-05 at 01:26:41
Lol you mean EMP?? I dont think it can be done in a strait line is what I meant, because of how it would have to follow on cooridnates. Im not sure though, not my area of expertise.

that was the point not making it go in a staright line smile.gif and go in curves and all the stuff like...like..like a mole get it?

lol, here is a gif i forgot to post about the beam, curently working on the ion cannon, just to give you an idea of how i think it should be the beam
user posted image
ignore the thing that says "adgif unregistered" i have a free version that saves gifs with text, i got to buy it so i dont get the text in there sad.gif

ADDITION:
oh and actually this is how the beam should be done.

face one
beam charging - make it so there is an animated sprite like bc when its loading the yamato

face two
beam launching - starts the beam

face three
beam travelling - three options either have an specific part that is just being created more and more when the beam needs it until it gets to destination so the beam doesnt looks cut, two- make a beam just like yamato with an start and an end, three- make the beam disappear
additional- make the beam travel underground like a mole! YAY!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2005-12-05 at 19:56:37
Ooooh... nice. What I think if we use that would to overlay that over the Ion Cannon, have that part where the beam enters orbit... then have another overlay that goes over the target where the beam arcs back down.

Yes, I like this idea.

Why dont we make the Ion Cannon like a sunken colony so if doesnt spin?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-12-05 at 22:28:57
The Ion cannon has to go into orbit and should only be seen in the first screen then disapear and show up on the target screen where it ripples the ground like an EMP except larger so that it has massive damage. tHe charge should look like a yamoto beam charge and the turn speed of the ion cannon should be relatively slow. It cant go under ground because that would destroy it and would do damage to everything in its path. And it cant fire that close.

I really like corbos beam because it is ionic and looks like it should while heading into orbit. Then it reapears in the opposite form(reverse) and does what I say above with EMP thing.

Woah, time out. Ion streams can curve? Since when?

They dont!

The idea is good, but what will you do if the enemy is further away then that little gif.. You have to string them together. Thats advanced memory/iscript.bin editing, unless I'm mistaken. The beam should work more like the primary beam, with the beginning, heading in one direction, and a secondary bmp of the beam itself after it like on a string. I'd say making it go like yamato gun is the easiest way to solve this problem but it won't fit with the idea of an Ion Discharge that well.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Dr.Shotgun on 2005-12-06 at 17:29:41
I like corbo's thing, but my idea is for the Beam to be more like a comet- since the Ion Cannon is facing at an angle, have the beam "disappear" into the atmosphere, then a short distance before it reaches the target, have it reappear and hit its target, sending out an EMP-type ripple effect. That would look so sweet, especially if your enemy was off-guard. One problem is that it isnt realistic.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Corbo(MM) on 2005-12-06 at 18:59:29
yes the beam should disappear i know that doing it yamato styale would be easier because we wont need two bmps but also
for this

why not to make like another bmp for when the beam has reached his target
nuke similar, the nuke is created and launched, disappears in the sky and then comes down and a nuke explosion comes, instead of that we can work on a ion discharge explosion i think, if no other graphic especialist opposes

by the way, the beam in my gifs actually was made for disappearing in the sky and then coming back in the same form but down from the sky (when i made it i was following my Xel'Naga idea of a beam that disappeared in the sky biggrin.gif)

lol?? if it is why i think it is NO! how would you make it like that that means that we have to make a new IC because it is facing at one angle only (up left) so if the beam is casted to down right what will happen? we will have to make one IC like will multiple hm..."things that shoot" or else make none so it doesnt need to move. it has to be able to move (at least for me) at least to 4 angles down left down right up, left up, left down why? because the target will not always be in the same place
any ideas of how would an ionic explosion be? i run out of ideas right now -.- oh and actually how will the ion discharge be casted, manually from the ion cannon, or have a secondary unit to cast it? say...scv? lol

Graphics are done by series of frames, not animated GIFs. DOn't worry.

I think a beam would work just fine.

I think a yamoto kinda thing would look better and match the spell buton.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Corbo(MM) on 2005-12-07 at 19:32:25
what about...make the beam travel like hyper fast say...10 milis for a 1x1 title and destroys everything in his road except your own units duh! but when it reaches the target it keeps going until its off the map, like it?

Yeah, it should be everything or the target.
