Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Have we forgotten the purpose of terrain?

I choose to use for your own maps for 1 reason.

Depending on the type of map you make, be it UMS or Melee, it can make or break a map. If the game mechanics are good but the terrain stinks it could really take away from the game.

I think this holds true especially to RPG maps. Creating the right type of terrain in the right way can and will add a lot of depth to your RPG.

RPGs, with that I mean the true RPG maps which aren't just about hacking and slashing as many foes as possible are in need of a suitable and interesting atmosphere to be appealing to more players, therefore you are in need to create terrain that fits into the theme, the terrain itself doesn't have to be extended to the very top of it, standard isometric terrain is fine and simple but I personally find it harder to create a proper atmosphere.

I like terrain, because it is hard to make, and unique, unlike triggers, which can easily be copied from someone and no one will realize it. Terrain is what makes your map personal, but I agree that the real purpose is to make it available for others to use, such as myself, but might as well use it yourself to make your map l00k k3wl bleh.gif

Terrain is just like triggers, if you make a whole new system such as Tuxedo's shooter, Rush or like Mp)3's Everarcha RPG: The Avarian Chronicles, that were a complete revolution to the map making community. They certainly have a unique feel, not by the terrain, but the systems and the triggers.
Also you can easily copy someone's terrain without people noticing it unless they are looking into it, just like triggers.

When I rarely, I mean rarely do terrain I mostly do it for others or to just do something small. Ive never actaully gone all out for any of my maps, except for some parts in my way old LOTR map.

i would personaly think that terrain is used to make the map alot more playable and make it flow better. But i think some people are just making it so flashy it loses the purpose of why i think that terrain is important. i think instead of making it so flashy that they should foucus more on how the terrain makes the map flow and how it plays. smile.gif tongue.gif

To make for others AND impress all

There are few pieces of terrain that I've actually released. For pieces of terrain that I release I personally demand perfection, none of the things that I make should look like they can be made better. That's why I stick to the terrain myself. Yet there are few pieces of terrain that I work with, it usually is the cliff ramp in jungle, trying to make it doubled to dirt and such. I try to find "new" pieces, but it's hard to do it in an explored tileset such as Jungle.
