Ermm, that doesn't make a lot of sense..(what I said up there..)

Anyway, SEN supporting OSMAP is different from SEN supporting open source maps. What I'm saying is, what if member x doesn't want his map open sourced? Are you going to go against his will? If he wanted it open source, he ould have done it himself.

Sorry about that blushing.gif

Nice post shocko.  And a lot of the community already does this.  Tux released his maps unprotected, etc etc etc.

I dare say (I was just talking about this over IM), the most hyprocritical thing for people, especially maplantians who claim "community mapping", is to unprotect a map, make a few changes, and feel the need to take some credit for themselves by adding "edited by me".  Why not just fix the map and leave credit mostly where credit is due, to the orginal maker?

I noticed this with the Input System map. When n0b0dy- updated the map, he stuck his name on the map much everywhere he could, and even listed himself as the author. When i updated the map, i spent more time removing his crap than actually updating it.

Shoot me if thats not ignorant.

What about our tutorials? What about our support forums? What about mapmaking wiki? What about you can actually ask the author for help?

If you don't have anything logic to say, shut up.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Urmom(U) on 2007-01-27 at 12:17:59
Maybe I should have worded that differently to something like "Closed source doesn't allow any room for map makers to learn hands on". Still, the personal attack is not appreciated and you have been warned several times not to flame.

edit- found a better wording I think.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Gigins on 2007-01-27 at 12:20:47
Closed mapping takes 1 small segment of learning away. Osmap takes every single protection benefits away. Shut up is a flame? maybe you should start thinking before you type and will not receive such a negativity. Logic is rewarded with good attitude and respect. Anything else will be rewarded with "flames".

QUOTE(Shocko @ Jan 27 2007, 06:23 PM)
Your points are well made and meaningful, but some people do care who made the map, and people should have the choice to their name on it and prevent others putting "edited by" etc all over it or remaking worse versions of it, that are partially rigged thus "funner".

You seem to forget that we make maps to play on Battle.net not maps to host on Staredit.net, your credit for your map is more important on Battle.net then it is for a website that hosts downloads so people can play the maps or learn from them.

I don't make anything for those who don't (and never will) understand and care about my work. In other words, I don't care about what Battle.net noobs think of my map and me.
QUOTE(Centreri @ Jan 27 2007, 06:35 PM)
JaFF, why do you think that the immature noob will suddenly become mature upon finding SEN or Maplantis? YaeXirillon, and plenty of other idiots, prove you wrong on that point.

And I am the proof that such things do actually happen.

QUOTE(IsolatedPurity @ Jan 27 2007, 06:39 PM)
Author credit could be more easy to defend if a lot of people did.

Agreed. The best way to fight map stealing/rigging is to fight ignorance.

Gigins, a tone down please. Especially with the last sentance.

Our tutorials will never show you a map from the inside, will never give you that feel. Also, the tutorials will never show you how to make good terrain. Only WoodenFire and a fiew others have their terrain maps in the DLDB, which is quite sad, since they can't offer all the wide range of terrain SC can have.
From my personal experience: I've learned a lot about Installation terrain from Xeno's map and from "The 5th station." My Installation skills are quite good now. That's all because of me being able to look at those maps.

Edit: You don't get the same feeling from watching porn either. So we should legalize rape now? huh.gif

Well lets see, you pretty much just said it yourself that you flamed.

But anyways, I agree with Jaff. The best analogy that I could think of for now is comparing learning about a science experiment from a book and actually doing the experiment. Although you can learn from reading from the book, you can learn much more from actually doing the experiment hands on.

Sorry if that's a bad analogy. tongue.gif

If you really want to make something that you think you deserve credits for, don't make an SC map. Learn some REAL programming and make an actual piece of software.

Whether or not you consider a map a legitimate piece of intellectual property, in the end you'll still be fretting over a map for a computer game made more than a decade ago.

Grow up, go out and play, there's more to life than people stealing your .scx.

QUOTE(Urmom(U) @ Jan 27 2007, 12:46 PM)
OSMAP has its downsides like people stealing and rigging maps (although stealing could be done with a hex editor) but those instances are rare.

But the potential is still there. I've said it once, and I say it again, if it were a read-only map viewer, I'd have absolutely no problems. Then "learning" is fully justified, and is pretty much the ONLY function.

The forums are like the tutorial; good, but only for the theory.

And who asks the author anyway? DEAD, your GTA Classis is a good map, do you get e-mails from random Battle.net people asking how you did some things? And again, that is only theory.

I do, quite some. E-mails, PMs, IMs... The fact that you are to lazy or w/e to ask the author is not an argument.

Talk to MA and LW? If that's possible, of course.

I have personally never unprotected maps, I have looked at unprotected maps, but I learnt most of my map making knowledge by just sitting in a channel, people telling me how to do it then trying it myself, it's really effective. Tutorials on this site arn't much help may I add.

Maybe we should talk to SI to enable -protectionoff and then if SCM Draft opens a map that is is protected, you can't save.

Although that wouldn't allow for us to fix bugs in protected maps.

DEAD, one question about contacting the author. What happens if the author changed his/her battle.net name and there is no possible way to contact the person? In your CTF Starfort game you put DEAD(DD)@useast but you don't use that account anymore. How would it be possible for B.net'ers to contact you?

Learning from the makers is better, and even if a specific maker isnt around anymore, there will still be others who know how to do things. We have trigger systems completely explained all over SEN and your going to tell me a better way is for them to open the map its used on rather than seeing it here with people to help them with what they dont understand? Get real Kookster.

Opening a map in five minutes to look at exactly how something is done is a to easier than waiting around 3 hours for an inarticulate slob that doesn't approve of OSMAP to call you a noob and do an awful job of explaining things.

SeN's an abandoned ship? It's 12:30 and there's been 200 people online today.

I agree completely with PCFredZ. You do NOT own intellectul property to maps, and technically shouldn't even be allowed to place your name on them. If you would've read the EULA when you first opened Staredit, you would've realised that all maps remain the soul property of Blizzard. If you made a good map people will know it, if you didn't, they won't.

Is it even worth the effort. Thats not the only way of learning, not the effective one either. "Read > Learn > Experiment" FTW!

Except there are laws against killing people. Unfortunately, there arent laws against stealing maps, since blizzard owns your soul and your firstborn map.
