i like how because of all the stuff we can do now theres more maps and better games, but i wish ppl played old school maps more, like matrix bullet time or the first stacked cannons defence...

Can people please not talk about "Matrix bullet time" or other such maps as old school. I and most of experienced battle.net still consider bounds very newschool. Like a year and a half or two years ago I think the "How smart are you?" map came out, and that's not even a bound, having only two or three boundlike obstacles.

The oldschool Matrix RPG kicks ass by the way, speaking of Matrix. If you see it be sure to download it and play it. It takes intelligence to win however.

Aye...I never actually understood that thing. Back in the olden days. (1999) is when I got into map making. I used Stareidt editor. I thought the only type of terrain was ISOM. I didnt even know there was square until way later. The first time I saw it I thought the map had been messed up or something. It was weird, but nowadays you see it al the time.

Well, to me
I couldn't really tell the difference
I only realized there were those maps until last november 2004.
I was pretty much kept in the shadows, and made pitiful maps with just staredit.

SEN's life is not necessarily beneficial to mapmaking.

qPirateKing had a very good point, that I may add I agree with, here.

SEN's popularity has sort of drawn away from the fundamentals of mapmaking and is targeted on abstract mapmaking and new ideas.

Yea, mapping has become a lot more complex that it used to be. I started mapping after I saw those simple RPGs like True DII where the terrain was simple and the triggers mainly consisted of nothing but the spell triggers. When a noob sees something like that, it encourages them to open up an editor and give it a shot themselves. However, when they find that the maps they have are all protected or impossible to do with a normal editor, they don't give mapping a second thought. The complexity of maps in terms of triggers and terrain have made additional editors a requirement, and this is a problem for prospective noobs. Few of them even know that extra editors exist! And even if they do stumble upon a forum like this one, they often get sucked into doing things over their heads (like waterfalls) instead of focusing on learning all the fundamentals. All the innovations have alienated the entry-level mappers and I fear that without a source of new blood, mapping will die out.

Very well said. Most people have a hard enough time managing to even make maps the normal way, and even less can afford real creativity on top of that. Think how many people can go beyond that, and utilize extended features? Not many.

SEN is good because there's a lot of energy here and pioneering has been almost non-stop, but all of it is useless if people arn't able to use it. Of all the grid systems, brush sets, mapping trick compendiums, ideas, and assorted whacko experimental stuff I've come up with, I've seen almost 90% of it go to complete waste on people who can barely even comprehend it... let alone appreciate it.

But thinking outside my own shell, what I think we need is more things to put advanced features in the hands of normal people, and of course, keep up the steady stream of innovation we've seen thus far to keep people interested. That, and publicity. It's no use to make all this stuff if people don't know about it. Blizzard of course is no help, even though they made the game, I think they only care about catering to those whining korean pro gamers, and couldn't give a rat's bum about UMS mapping (just my shallow opinion).

I remember the "good 'ol days" too... I didnt make very many maps (except for the very simple types of buncha carriers vs buncha battlecruisers) but i remember the UMS maps i played. All of them being really crappy... It used to be really cool having one uber-hydra walking down a path slaying zerglings that didnt stand a chance. Really advanced triggers too (Display txt msg: Kill them all!!!!!!!!!!!! spread across the map)... blink.gif

I remember not knowing how to do the 'extremely awesome out of reach squared terrain' or knowing what the hell SCXE even was. Back when Matrix's were cool, I took the old Matrix 4 Way 3 Race and used the map for my own map, because I had no idea how else to make squared terrain.

Well so did I, and Yoshi bound 1 to make my own bound of... I did never understand how to make these fires lethal... was so annoying until I found out that a loc is following a player =P

Terrain really hasn't changed all that much. Instead of only being able to create isometric terrain, programmers have found ways to control staredit and build terrain tile by tile, or mosaic as people are calling it.

It's not that much different, just a new and more detailed attempt at terrain.

I remember when maps were just made with StarEdit, and if anything was not able to be done in StarEdit it was amazing. (turn on shared vision with computers, the extra units, buildings on water, etc.) I remember when ISOM had just come out and people started using the "square" terrain. I remember seeing a map with player colors, my brother made me delete it because he said it was "hacked and would crash your computer". (I just secretly redld it again tongue.gif). I remember first getting SC when I was 7. (around 1998, I think).

I remember my first working trigger. I was very much happy.
First thing I did wen I got sc: StarEdit. tongue.gif (Map maker from the start.)
