The negitive numbers just loop the other way. So 0 is 255 and -1 is 254. (And 31237 is 5 witch is also -5371 and another infinite amount of vaules.)

What do you mean I can't save with the valuie 257? I was using an early version of StarForge (which I got from Bolt) that lets you input any number and save it fine. I could put in negative 394 with it if I wanted to. That test wasn't done the same way all the others were.

Right! StarForge cannot save values over 256 or behind 1 in the map. So it converts the values and then saves the map.

I was about to yell at the guy saying that wasn't so, but he's right. The values are converted. Looks like there is no way to place such units, because you can check the owner and it ain't 257.
