Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> What type of Power should we turn to?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Quabarrick on 2005-08-28 at 12:51:22
I think solar power is the one that will eventually power the earth but it would have to come from personal panels instead of companys harvesting it and selling most others are ether too dangerous (nuclear) unreliable (wind) and most of the others not being wide scale enough.

off topic and to Lonely_Duck:
Usualy people call me infested, as the second half of my name could be considered a flame.
But hey, at least you can READ my name, unlike the other 99.9% of B.net

Back on topic:
What do you guys think of geo-thermal and Tidal?

About hydrogen:
It's not renwable energy, in a national geographic, it mentioned that Petro products are needed to use hydrogen. Feel free to politely tell me if I'm wrong on this.

I vote wind there is usually a gust of wind even if its really small

or if that doesnt work Nuclear

They are okay in my opinion, I just prefer Solar Power, anything really is actually better then Nuclear Power and anything else that harms our environment.

As long as the moon is around we will have tides. tongue.gif

Tidal power isn't available anywhere though and geothermal is still to advanced.

I went over osme old notes I found when i did some public speaking on hydrogen, I found that it takes about as much energy as oil to produce. If we use solar energy to produce hydrogen it would be more effecient then solar energy alone.

See... Solar power can help with a lot of power issue, whether it be combining with other powers.

Who says geothermal is too advanced? It can be done. And is done.

Tides probably wont supply much power. Much better to put turbines in a flowing river, albeit the dead fish will smell bad =P.

Me and my science teacher had a discussion about the possible use of harnessing Lightning Bolts as a efficient power source. Turns out it's not very good at all. >.<

Of couse not, they are unpredictable and very rare in certain places. Geothermal energy is to "advanced" because right now what we use to harnesss it costs way to much.

methane gas it is very renewable and there is no way it will ever stop being produced
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Vibrator on 2005-08-29 at 15:32:34
It's also toxic and dangerous and not avalaible everywhere.

Since when is it not available everywhere every human and animal produces methane so it is very common
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Vibrator on 2005-08-29 at 17:20:26
But it isn't enough to power everything we have. You would need methane mines to get enough, or you could get some power from it by using trash or compost.

You dont mine farts farms a good size farm with like 20 pigs has enough gas to power a large city
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Fronter on 2005-08-29 at 18:10:27
The most effcient way of getting methane is through the mines... There isn't enough quantity of it around.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by m2nello on 2005-08-29 at 18:16:10
the ventilation systems in farms are smothered in methane gas hence the easiest way is harvesting animals and breed them specifically for this case most likely pigs or cows

I think Solar is the best one.

The sun will never die out within our lifetimes and it will never run out.

Second would probably be wind or nuclear.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PlayaR on 2005-09-01 at 03:20:22
i said solar but i would also say geo-thermal becuase they both arent gona run out...
i didn say hydro because in west asia the turks built a dam for hydro power on the euphrates river i think or tigerus im not usre which on but anyway it was shortening the water going the the country below so that started an arguement and that might happen whereever u build a hydro dam unless u build a hydro damn on a river which heads out to the ocean and also the rivers can run out sometime, im not sure how but i think they can.
i didn say tidal cuz i don know wat that means even tho u explained it
i didn say wind cuz sometimes the wind is rly low.
i didn say nuclear cuz pollution is a big problem and it carriers many deceases

I saw that we should use varying amounts of each. Focusing on one in particular doesn't achieve as much as having a variety.
Hydroelectric is probably the best considering you can place them anywhere and they will run steadily. Wind can die out some days, and there can always be clouds, meaning those will run on backup power. So far I haven't heard of the mississippi drying up.

i think ur idea is the beat one so far cuz u jus beat my solar idea with the clouds and that when one dies out we can just turn to another one so that using all of them is a good idea

Tidal. If we large areas of coastline with electricity generating turbos then the energy created will be quite a large amount (I guess). The tides are also always existent and stable. Although I don't really oppose any other method as well (except nuclear is they use long half-life elements like Cesium)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Vibrator on 2005-09-01 at 10:15:12
Lol, actually guys the wind will never die. At the heights they build them at there is always going ot be some wind and if enough are built it wont matter if some are not producing as much as others.
