I might make one in the days going up to thanksgiving. It'll probably only be mediocre, but I haven't made a melee map in forever.

The cool thing about this competition is that anyone can make a melee map. It is incredibly simple.

Anyone can make a UMS map too, it's very simple too. How good melee or UMS maps are however, depends on the skill of the creater. I'm not saying melee is harder to do than UMS, I don't want an argument here. I'm just pointing it out for you happy.gif

Both require varying types of skill. Imo, A melee map must be balanced, unique (hopefullly xD), and pleasing to the eye, and functional in gameplay.

A UMS can be taken in many more directions, and although melee has more of a structure to the type of map you must make, it does not make it 'simpler'.

Additional Notes:
Map style is meant to be symmetrical.

Each base has 3 expos. The safest expo which should be taken first has no gas, however the third expo with gas and more minerals can be attacked very easily as it is wide open. The fourth expos require battling as they move toward the enemies ground and are far away from your bases.

This map is meant to be used for 2v2's only. If you want to play 1v1 on this map, it is possible, however there are too many minerals to give a GG. If you find imbalances tell me about them and I will try to fix them.

Erai is my AKA on USEast, PGT, and Asia Server.

Additional Notes:
This map has a lot to explain about it because I don't think its been done before, so I'll try the best I can to explain how it works.

Basically the starting positions are in the middle. From the middle you can see all the other players because they are just over the river. The minerals are very low and only allow around 700 - 800 (can't remember) after mining all of them. If you are vs a group of Zerg that four pool and sunken you will have enough time to expo and be gone by the time they start. If a Zerg does four pool trying to take advantage, he will be at a very significant disadvantage due to a lack of an expo.

The interesting part of this map is the fact that your top and bottom are split in two. If your in a 2v2 and you have the enemy on your side of the map then the game unravels in an interesting way. From my experience anything can happen from wild worker micro when making your first expo to 2 ling rushes. The map allows for intense micros early in the game and gives the time to build up to a massive battle late game; try expoing at the start with non stop worker micro!

The map is meant to be unique, I hope you like the idea. It was tested numerous times to make sure that barracks floating, sunkens, and any other imbalances wouldn't work.

The map has another version and will have an Observer mode supported soon. I hope you enjoy. This map is made for either 1v1 or 2v2.

First map is too boring looking.


Second map is interesting, but it definitely lacks sanity.

The map will unravel fast, and zerg players will have a huge advantage against protoss in the beginning because zerg can fast sunken and just rape the toss base forcing toss to waste a huge amount of money rebuiliding. Nothing the zealots can touch (or by the time they run around you'll have a bunch more) or those weak cannons can dish... v_v. Did I mention the range of sunken > cannon? O_o

The bottom cliffs give terran a huge advantage in the beginning, allowing them to post marines on the cliffs and destroy gas and gaining a hard choke to get past. sad.gif

I personally think it would be mostly TvZ and the early game would probably drag out longer because of the main starting rivalry.

I perfer traditional layouts. Good thought though.

I don't really chat anywhere cept' MSN, but i'll try to get on AIM more. =)

I was thinking of repositioning the gas, but I didn't figure it would make a big difference; the starting gas only has around 1000 units.

Also I was thinking about sunkens and what not... They would work well in a early PvZ with z on your side, however I think lings would do more dmg. Protoss would definately have a hard time early game vs a Z. He would have to micro with the probes.

I think this is a interesting contest seeing that almost all the mappers on this site are UMS mappers. If you go on Starcraft.org there are melee mappers there, but I didn't see very many melee mappers on this site. It'll be interesting to see who wins and how good their maps are.

I'm suggesting that they need improvement. People are making basic mistakes, they can be fixed easily and you will learn for later if you post your maps in the melee forum.

Starcraft.org maps are awful and they are going to stay that way because no one gives good feedback. Yes this contest is made of mostly melee newbs, but you will learn alot by trying to make and perfect a map, and hopefully this will get you more insight on melee.

Nice map dark, but it has many imbalances.

First of all, the map favors Terran to a ridiuclous amount.

Zerg's first expo is too far away giving them a big disadvantage versus any race.

Protoss on the other hand has no room to move units around, the middle needs to be completely redone, perhaps making it flat otherwise Terran would just kick a Protoss player all over. The map is really Terran imba... At any rate I would suggest the following:

Make a closer expo with or without gas and then keep the one out there allowing for 3 expos total.

Next, remove the middle area and make it easier for the Protoss to move an army around. Do what RoV does in making a large arena in the middle, not a cramped space where Terran can bottle neck and ledge a Protoss obliterating any goons and lots. A good addition might be to make the ledges bigger but that depends... At any rate...

Right now the map is so Terran dominant that even I'd feel guilty owning a Protoss on it -.-;

To admit it I'm not that great at melee mapping. From what I've seen Starcraft.org maps arent THAT bad I mean yes the maps there are overpraised from what I've seen. ANyway due to my lack of knowledge of Melee I dont think I'm that good enough to enter the contest.

Don't worry about that. Only like 3 people actually have some idea of how melee works and how to make maps, and only one of them has entered the contest. Just try to be original, and follow the advice here
