Some mountain work and some other concept stuff on the side, didn't have much time otherwise there'd be more.

by samples does it mean he just looks at it or is there a way that he can cut and paste the terrain from the samples we send?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2004-08-20 at 00:07:16
Sample meaning configurations of tiles and units that create the best effect. Whichever works best, I'll use. I have a good sense of how to replicate things once I see them at least once, so I won't need cut and paste.

this is a tower i worked on for a little bit, i hope you like it happy.gif

If you use it you can mess around with it's shape, i used it as a side/corner view.
just for fun i added a little effect if you see it on bnet. closedeyes.gif

This open to idea's thing is really ... Well let's just say it's gonna take you a while to sort through the crud.

This is a moutain EFFECT. The mountain itself is bland and looks like a large temple. But the effect I was going for was to have multiple layers of rock. The blend looks squared slightly, but it could form a nice mountain.

Here's a prison thing, it's the one at the bottom with the units, the others were just in progress models.

I looked at all the terrain samples and well no offense and i probly cant do better since i got starforge today but some look weird.

But on the upside Paellas prison the one mountain and a couple of the water towers were the best errain ive ever seen

Ok I got to look at most of them when I got home finally, but frankly I wasn't really impressed with most. Too many abrupt edges, incompatable terrain, and tile repetion to consider using in the project. Some of the towers were ok though, the prison samples with the raised guard towers might be usable (I'm thinking more interior of a prison, though), but these are not quality par for what I'm trying to accomplish. It's a good start, but not enough. I'll take a look at the most recently posted maps now though, since I had to leave before I could see the newer ones.

If I can get some time tonight I'll play around a bit myself with some of your samples to see if I can get the effects I'm looking for, and post what I come up with. I haven't done a lot of custom tile stuff so I might not be able to do a lot better, but I'll post what I come up with.

For now though, I desperately need a good looking mountain, and I'm thinking a combination of cliff tiles, rocky doodads, and/or rock sprites (though I'm loath to use so many) might create the proper effect, so try playing around with samples of each if your making one.

Anyway, thanks for the help so far, all.

Here's my mountain, I bet it's a little too big, but if you put it in a corner I don't think it would take up too much space.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-08-20 at 20:27:13
Tux, what kind of mountain are you looking for?
like what style? mountain as in the 1st submitted one, tall and with edges,
or like, err... i can't describe it, but what are you expecting in terms of shape?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by phatdiddy on 2004-08-20 at 20:49:43
Ok Tux I found this old thread about starforge terrain and found 2 things that you might find interesting. I take absolutely no credit for them.

The picture terrain was done by D-Von. It's a nice mountain.

And the map by Battleaxe3. Map here

And that's a nice bridge, a nice big bridge.

Tux don't be such a jerk you asked for ideas so no im not gonna spend 1hr on a piece of terrian to make u happy and if ur so sure you can do stuff why ask stop being an arrogent jerk *Jerk* hence i wanted to use a B word like a person without a father.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KhaosKreator on 2004-08-20 at 22:07:39
He's not being a jerk. It's just that all these samples are sup-par at best, mine included. So keep submitting until we hit pay dirt.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by phatdiddy on 2004-08-20 at 22:09:04
The problem is if we're being judged by Tux's own standards this is gonna take alot more than time.

Mountains are easy to make in ice and twilight because the cliffs aren't as steep as those found in badlands and jungle. Look at this map (http://www.staredit.net/index.php?download=635) to see some nice mountains in the twilight tileset (use black sheep wall to view). The towns are pretty cool, too tongue.gif. Badlands isn't a greatest choice if you're looking for cool terrain.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PodFedJay on 2004-08-20 at 22:34:43
if u r looking for prison style terrain... badland is pretty good

EDIT : qPirateKing, but i have to say that terrain is good and badland isn't a good choice of making cool terrain.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2004-08-20 at 22:40:49
If you want a cool terrain go for variety. Jungle is very good at this, even better when you correctly use sprites.
Ice and Twilight are also good.
