Staredit Network -> Concepts -> The Problem With P13+

Many Mac users have complained about this site's support of some of the advanced techniques used on this site, and I apologize. However, I am here to advance map making progress, not hault it because the minority of battle.netisn't compatible with these maps (sorry, but its true, most are PC users). Blizzard has not stepped in to fix these issues, so we are free to use them.

I am not stopping the mac community from making something thats PC incompatible.

You have to understand, by choosing another more unpopular computer type or operating system, theres a hidden cost to it. Most software and other things just don't work. By you, or your parents getting a mac, automaticly puts you under this.

Thus, we will keep expanding the map making community as we please, because it makes our maps better and more fun.

Even if I did ban these techniques from this website, would this stop other communities from applying the same thing? Sorry bud.

Such is the case! I was just joking with HI don't worry mate!

Why not get a duel platform system that runs both MAC and Windows, that would save you a lot of problems!

I don't think theres such a thing. Listen Bud, Starcraft has REALLY LOW system requirements. Just invest in another small computer for like under 50 bucks or something. Its well worth having access to all the map making tools and maps on battle.net.

You can get Duel Operating Systems, it just sometimes runs slower than expected for the speed of the CPU/RAM and all, however with Starcraft, not an issue!

Whoa, slow down there.

I never demanded a ban on the usage of advanced techniques: read the post.
I asked for a warning in the forces screen in maps that use P13+ units, so that an incompatible (that's Linux too) OS user can safely leave the game without either ruining it by leaving during the briefing, or run the risk of a crash if they start the game.

No bans, just warnings that will benefit everyone.

I'm not even going to go into the whole Mac vs PC debate here, as most PC users have never even used a Mac for what they're meant to be used for. Oh, and Windows is only 'better' because of the monopoly it has in the OS market. In fact, it's not better, but it's popular.

Yes I agree there should be a warning there that says like:

WARNING: This trick can only be done using the WINDOWS version of Starcraft: Broodwar.

Couldn't it be possible for some guy to make a 1337 patch for mac computers that will apply the windows tricks so they don't get dropped?

Well, such a long warning would be too much, but a short one where the creator would normally put their name in Forces would be enough.

Like just: Windows Only Map

Clokr already said that a patch wouldn't be feasible as PCs and Macs store their memory in different ways - it's a hardware problem.

You use starforge to create them
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2004-09-03 at 19:58:08
They don't exist. It's just kind of like a "bug" or something.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tactics_Editor on 2004-09-05 at 05:18:57
Ok, these "features" are actually "buffer overflow" bugs:

---> Players >12
---> Units >299 (or whatever is last normal)
---> Sprites > 519 (or whatever is last normal)
---> Player colors over 16
---> Unit health > 100%
---> And so on......

(they were discussed at the "SCMvirus" thread (closed now))

The problem with that type of bugs is following:

The thing that bug produces can differ not only between versions, but also between the starcraft localizations, and, more important, ARCHITECTURES...

And, BTW, that type of bugs are sometimes holes in the sequrity, so companies usually try to get rid of them as fast as possible.
Blizzard thought that they are all hidden under the Great MoPaQ Wall, so it didn't care about them.............. Yet.....

So I really advise you to GET RID OF THOSE BUGS IN YOUR MAPS!

Because I sometimes hear "Noooo, this map is good, but it's said to crash the game sometimes, I won't play it!"

Well little things like >100% health never crash sc, but some things like weird sprites should be taken out...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2004-09-06 at 14:27:53
The unit healths above 100% isn't really a bug. It works for all versions of Starcraft.
