Yea, I can understand dtbk's judgement. He's dealt with alot of these kinds of situations so experience is definitely on his side. On flaming and spamming that is. Gj.

Precisely.  Some people think that just because someone disagrees with them that they're being flamed, so they report a post and go "OMGWTF ITS FLAME!  BAN!!!".
Your insistence on "insulting", "flaming", or whatever else you want to call it is at the root of many flame problems.  You continue to call people "whities/greryies/greenies" or whatever color or choose.  I don't care what the origin of the color is, it is still a derogatory remark.

You want me to get serious and harsh?  I'll start by getting rid of you.  Your "blunt"-ness or whatever euphemism you choose to use is starting the flame wars you so desparately seem to want to eradicate.

It's clear you've made this topic for the sole purpose of attacking me and bringing your flame war to me.

Uh DT, I think "whities/greenies" is just referring whether the member is a regular elite, or normal member. I fail to see how that is derogatory at all.

Kellimus says that since a new member's color is white, calling them a "whitie" is calling them a noob. Calling someone a noob is flaming.

How is calling somebody a noob flaming?

"noob" -> "newb" -> "newbie" -> "somebody new at something"

Therefore, whenever Kellimus calls somebody a "noob" he is just referring to somebody new. You obviouslly percieve the word noob to be flaming, but it isn't. That is like saying whenever I call somebody "a veteran", that I'm flaming. It doesn't even make sense.

So you're saying that if Kellimus walked around and now says "newb" instead of "noob", you or DTBK wouldn't say a word? Ok, since "noob" is percieved as a flame, explain how 'whitie' and 'greenie' are flames. They just tie back into the word "newb", so "newb" and "whitie" are synonyms.

Why are you the only one that sees that?

Sure. It may be a bit insulting to get the OO in noob. But really all it is, is another way to say, "New person"

But apparently, SEN's perception is warped..

Edit: Took out the quote from Zombie because it's from another thread.

I don't think he's talking about people who are new to the game. He's using it to be insulting, just like how Kellimus is using it.

Well, when you're spraying it all over in every post like a broken record (assuming you kids have in fact seen a record player), it gets VERY annoying. So yeah, I probably would still get pissed. That reminds me, Kellimus, please stop your excessive labeling.

I agree.

Something I've forgotten to mention is the huge amount of people that are at "war" with others. I've seen people report about 75% of another person's posts in which they don't agree with, but when they are reported and warn, they whine like babies.
Unfortunately, most of the people who regurarly use the "Report" function are or have been flammers//spammers and they generally have a warn level of 40%. Of all those people, only one of them has had the decency of reporting himself.

So yes, we have to deal with an ongoing war in which most members want to deal punishment to others which they don't agree with. That is why about 50% of all "Post Reports" are just ignored. I find it funny when someone reports another person that said: "This is a poor map".
If it was for me, I'd warn people for false reporting.
If it was for me, I'd suspend people who say they didn't do it while the evidence is staring at them in their faces.
And above all, no whining.

If a Mod disagrees with you, there isn't much you can do. You could ask a Global Mod or even an Admin, but almost always our descisions will be the same. You say we don't have enough active mods, but the standards most of you are setting to active is to spend 22 hours on SeN.
You complain on why we usually choose 17-21 year olds as mods instead of the bulk of the board's population, which is at 16-13.
The answer is quite simple. We older members are more mature, experienced and much less biased because we've seen Moderation in this Forum for about 1.5 years. If we put someone who has been 4 months, he will generally do as he pleases because he doesn't know all the rules by heart. Proof of this is the FAQ forum, look at how low those View numbers are. And for each topic, about 20 of them belong to me and I'm pretty sure that every Staff//Admin member has viewed each of them over 5 times.
(There are very few exceptions to this, like DTBK)

So you want more mods?
Show us a good logical reason why we should have more. As far as we know, we have too many.
You want us to choose younger mods?
Show us why a younger mod would be better. Proof shows that older members make better mods.

That doesn't help your cause:
"F*ck >> Sex >> Reproduction
AND REPRODUCTION IS GOOD KIDS!"
"N*gger >> Black Person >> Cool People!
So I can just drop the word left and right!"
It doesn't matter what the sugar coded version of the word is it's the word that you're using, not what you could've used.

That's not always true. If I joined 3 years ago when I was 10 and I know how to act mature and know all the rules, then I SHOULD be a reasonable canidiate correct? It's not really age your looking at it's more of maturity. It just so happens that most 12-15 year olds like to spit out the words "LOL wang@On1EVLEN" and what not.

Wow. Long post. I don't complain about the age of moderators, but do you really recruit them based on age? I would have thought you recruit them based on maturity, respectability (etc etc) alone.

<sarcasm> Yes, just tell me you're 19 and I'll make you a Global Mod. </sarcasm>

Last I checked, BeeR_KeG doesn't recruit mods. I recruit the mods around here. I can't set a whole definite process because I'm far too random (and plus all the "OMG pick me"s will lead to a drastic decrease in registered members). Generally, I'll look at a person that I actually know well from their postings in a positive way. If I see that name and go "Wow, 80% warn from four different mods, plus he's always selling crack to my kids and spamming", that's a bad thing. (don't let warn level discourage you, several of the mods and staff have 20% or more tongue.gif) I examine what knowledge they demonstrate of the topics in the forum they could potentially moderate (ie, a potential UMS mod would be producing very good maps and lots of high-quality help in Mapping Assistance). Then, I go through their posts and warn logs for a good quality check (yeah, this does include grammar/spelling). Lastly, character is important. If they tend to start fights or look they'll do a lazy job or I just don't like their face, that's a big blow to their chances of being hired.

So yeah, a 12 year old probably could probably pass. Its rare, but there's nothing to stop it from happening.

Seeing as how the last 20 (30?) posts were off topic and the first few made no sense, what exactly is the problem?

Also, I disagree with Moose and DTBK that calling someone a 'noob' is flaming.

'You're an idiot'

'You're a noob'

The two don't fall in the same category. However, I'm sure if someone says oen of those things and continues on, it would be an attack on the person. That would be flame; individually, 'you're a noob' isn't as serious as the other.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2006-01-16 at 10:41:03
Maybe not, but people do often use noob as an insult, often to a backstabber or a complete idiot. Newb, on the other hand, was used more as a word that describes a regular person that just started (learning) something.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CheeZe on 2006-01-16 at 10:52:34
Except the two words are synonymous. Simply because they're spelled one way means nothing! They have the same meaning, being new.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Centreri on 2006-01-16 at 10:57:26
Yes, but many people still find a difference, including myself. I call someone new to the game a newbie, but a backstabber a noob. They started out the same, but on SEN, at least, are now usually considered different.

Oh, please.. This is a topic about moderators. Lets agree to disagree?

Don't be naive CheeZe, noob has a whole different meaning, from its origin, newb.

Acutally it's about how DTBK sucks diguised into a thread that is suppose to be about moderators. But it's also about how mods do their job, so might as well get the whole noob thing out of the way.
