Well, ok, ask yourself this:
Is having pets immoral? Is keeping fish in a little tank in your room and barely paying bother to them immoral? Is keeping a moth in a little jar in your room for a few days so you can glance over at it every time you walk by it until it dies immoral?
You can relate zoos to having simple house pets in many ways. I mean, what are house pets for other than to please you? We keep fish in our house because they're colorful and it looks nice in your house. We take care of dogs so we can throw a ball halfway across our yards and make them retrieve it. We keep moths in little jars on our dressers because we like to look at them and understand how they grow and think, why do they keep flying straight into the glass in feeble attempts to escape? Haven't they figured out that there's something blocking their path yet?
That's all we have zoos for: to see and learn about all different types of animals which we can't see everyday.
As for the animal's treatment, I'm sure they're in heaven. Out in the wild they're constantly fighting for survival. In zoos, they're given food, a considerable amount of space, and a nice place to shiz and sleep. In zoos, they have a team of professional breeders tending to them 24/7 who know how to cure sickness and cure other injuries (any that could come up in a zoo, which would be considerably hard to do). Either they're in heaven, or they feel couped up and actually want to be fighting for their survival. No one will ever know this, because none of us are animals, and we can't just ask them "hey man, you good with your cage?".
Someone said that humans try to figure things out too much. I agree with that, but I guess in a way it's the only thing we can do. We were put on this earth lacking what every other living creature does, we don't have fur, we don't have claws or a protective shell, we don't have prefect eyesight or incredible strength, but we do have something everything else doesn't: knowledge. Whatever we lacked, we simply built. Our armor is our shell, our weapons are our claws, our clothes are our fur, our glasses or contacts can correct bad eyesight. We've always been a curious and intelligent species, and we're the only creatures on earth that can understand and control our emotions and feelings.
Like I said, I agree with the fact that we think too much, though. Our knowledge will kill us one of these days, I can garuntee you that.

part of that is true. people that have pets are for pleasing, entertainment, and such. but its pretty different from zoos. well we do enjoy having pets like cats and dogs around. people that own pets are up to them to take care of them, keep them happy and healthy.
but in our present time, letting humans to take care of them might be the only way to help them. if not, they usually get run over by a car or die from other things and this would still happen sometimes when they are left unattended. there are laws on animal abuse, and you should notice by now that there are far more cats ,dogs, birds, or other animals for people to take home. people do feel the same way you wrote, and some people don't have pets. i guess sometimes that people that do more on trying to help them are doing more harm instead.
but i do think that some animals should be left alone. like birds and fish should have their freedom to fly and swim. there are snakes for sale on local pet shops but i think people wouldn't want to take care of a snake anyway.
