Umm I think what Yoshi was saying just further confirms my beliefes; this game is getting old, and boring for me. I'm moving on, and I know no one will care and they should'nt. I will still hold my contest, though, I'm not gonna be a censored.gif head and desert my promise, though it's gonna be ALOT of work without Yoshi, I need some more help, this is a big thing, and I am hoping to hold this contest every year.

Ummm... change your sen password to something new smile.gif.
Synd has the database as well as many others.  Although your passwords are semi-encrypted, he could easily make a script to crack them.  Almost anyone could.  So... change them! smile.gif

yeah, I have seen excerpts of the database, although they are all encrypted last I heard any pass under 5 or 6 letters has been compromised by brute force already.... also change anywhere else you used the pass.. I need not worry I used unique pass for this site =]

Wow, just glad SEN is back up. It really sucks that Yoshi is gone, I will miss his leadership. But, I'm sure who ever takes his place will be able to keep the site up and running well.

I bet the hacker was some bastard from icy-hell that wanted to get back at us for someone from here hacking them that one time.

Passwordwise;

Isn't it that seven character to fourteen character passwords are harder to decrypt with certain algorityms? If they include a mix of numbers, basic ansii characters through them?

Thats what i've done, and it should be ok, but my password was taken.

If your password was the same password as icy hell, it was an easy grab.

Hello IP (too lazy to write the full name tongue.gif) I'm Aster...I'm a kick ass mod, and I would be Uber if not for some post count problems. Anyway I'm a bit confused, as due to the powers that be I only can log on once or twice a week (the error messages scared me too o_O ) but....Yeah. Welcome to uberness.

Think of it like this: 4 single word passwords = level 2 encryption, 7 word passwords = level 5, 14 word passwords = level 10 encryption,

now when you mix the 7 words with letters it becomes level 12, when you mix the 14 words with numbers it becomes 24, the CIA says level 25 and 26 are difficult to crack (for them).

Yeah that was a crappy chart but it should give you some idea.

Doesn't it also vary upon use of ASCII characters and spaces? Obviously if it uses just letters and numbers, there's 36 possible for each character, but ASCII opens the door to 256.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-10-15 at 16:13:53
I suppose it opens it to 256, but some of them are almost impossible for the basic individual to get, but maybe add that to registration, that users should try to create long passwords, and include the majority of common "special letters".

[Counseling]

Alright everyone, don't be too sad... and please, don't post all over this News topic with messages like "NO YOSHI WTF MADE U DO IT DON'T LEAVE OR I KILL U!"

Personally I'm just glad that SEN is back up. Yoshi, when he was still the Admin, was more like a buddy than an Administrator. It sucks that this project of his got, to put it subtly, sacked, but this site was at first just for his own entertainment purposes. However, it slowly became a crucial part of us mapping-geeks' lives, and the lack of it would create a hole unable to be filled... if not for that he instead handed it to Isolatedpurity instead.

So what exactly is SEN now? So many people are leaving, following Yoshi's suit. Personally, I think I'm actually one of the early members to join SEN, after playing The Haunted Battlecruiser on Battle.net and typing up the link. The rest of you are comprised of mostly newbies fascinated by the UMS maps you see on B.net these days and probably just registered to post for the heck of it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that instead of mourning and whining, DON'T.

SEN was a community.

SEN was a school in a community, to teach and be taught.

SEN was the place to go after school for fun.

SEN, however, is not dead.

SEN was, is, and will be the best UMS mapping site on the internet; just ask around on any other site and they'll tell you that.
( disgust.gif Except, maybe, syndicatesystems...)

Please, those regulars who joined WAY before me, don't leave.

And those of you who just joined... you probably don't have much of a memory of SEN from Before, but we're all here to support and help to give you a memory to cherish of an SEN of the future.

MD5 is one-way encryption (other methods might've been used as well). Regardless if there were three letters or ten, it returns a 32-character number. I doubt passwords stored in IPB were "cracked", it's much easier to just change them through IPB exploits/database.

they were brute forced... or a password logger was added to the forum code.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Clokr_ on 2004-10-15 at 19:15:24
For those who doesn't know, brute force a password is a program that tries passwords until it finds the right one.
There are the ones that use a dictionary, for those the best is NOT use known words, add numbers, combinations of letters and numbers that you know and don't use keyboard ordered letters like qwerty .
The other ones just test all or most of the characters. For those just make long passwords, a 3 chars password might take some seconds to be brute forced, but a 4 chars one might take some minutes, a 5 one some hours and a 6-7 one might take days or weeks.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-10-15 at 19:17:36
For the record...

My computer (2.8GHz, HT) can bruteforce most anything that's 10 chars (or less) in length in less than a day, plus factor in distributed bruteforcing....chances are good that your password is NOT safe. CHANGE THEM, REGARDLESS.

Secondly, Darkness22k has now earned himself the title of "moron" in my book. I've talked a lot with him in the past, and from the looks of it, I think he's earned himself a ban from most all modding (don't kill me for generalizing there wink.gif). He's done this before to other sites, not all of them modding related, but just the same...

Also uses aliases "DeeKay", "Deek", among others.

On a personal note, DK, "just because" is NOT a valid reason. We've talked before on this, and you know what I think of it.

A random quote for you:

"DK is a script kiddy in the pure sense of the word"

So stop it.

Correction here since I'd rather not edit a post.

evopiel and syndicate are the main people who did this, with DK standing on the sides, in a sense.

Just the same, uhh, they've all got passwords...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-10-15 at 19:49:25
I guessed at that, and changed mine within second, but if SI thinks the code has a logger in it, has this been checked and purged?

Bruting the system means that almost nothing is safe, the best password is to be a Guest!
