All websites are public. Google is a search engine.

Not if they are passworded, duh.
I know google is a search engine, I added it to show popularity status of websites that are viewed a lot. Of course you didn't see my reasoning, your too "a matter of fact".

QUOTE(CheeZe @ Aug 5 2006, 10:16 AM)
Jammed, we haven't seen things go in a black hole because we don't have cameras that can shoot that far.

I was trying to say this: if 7-7 says, that we can see an object falling into the Black Hole (as he says, because time-space is distorted, it happens forever slowly, but photons of light can stil lescape), so, if a Black Hole consumes a Star, we wil lstill be able to see the star shining because it's falling into it forever slow.

QUOTE(7-7 @ Aug 5 2006, 10:25 AM)
CheeZe is right, let me make it more clearer by stars disappearing though.  Scientists looking for black holes are looking for a circular movement that is very tight around some type of object.  Like a star (sun) on a very small orbit, slowly losing mass, but much faster than a weak dieing star would lose its mass.

Here is a good picture:

As far as I know, they search for Black Holes like this: if they see two (or more) stars moving, and their paths cross in one point, that point is (not 100%, but quite possible) a Black Hole.

QUOTE(Lithium @ Aug 5 2006, 01:50 PM)
If stars are in Black hole's radius of gravity, it would instantly be "sucked in' as you guys say.

Not always. Sometimes the object spins around the Black Hole. I think I read that in 7-7's link to Wikipedia.

Moo. Well, I didn't foresee making another topic with this title. It's rather apparent that we've been hacked. Through a security hole in IPB, bruteforcing of a password, I don't really know. I've asked our host to take a look into it, so hopefully we can get some leads on this. I have an IP address and it isn't a proxy, so with some luck we can take care of this hacker.

The next course of action would be for me to find a backup of the database so we can reset everything. The logical place for this to be is one that I can't access right now, so we're going to have to wait until I get the root control panel password again.

As for everyone else...
First, change your passwords, and make them hard to guess (staff especially). I make no gaurantees on security at this point. Don't forget your old password though, if I find a backup it will be changed. Also, the lost password function is disabled. So, please remember your password. tongue.gif
Also, I understand a lot of us lost minerals and post counts. There's more important issues. If I locate a backup, these will be restored.

Possibilities...
1. He only got into me and IP's v4 accounts and wreaked havoc via Invision Board (v4). No problem at all.
2. He got into the site via the root control panel. Big problem, but one that won't happen because I changed the password to something so long and so filled with ASCII characters and spaces that it can't be accessed at all.
3. He has the database password. We're screwed until #2 gets fixed.

As of yet, I have found no evidence of anything but possibility #1.

So basically, no major action until that password mentioned in #2 gets reset.

If anyone is looking for a direct explanation of what happened, the "hacker" did the following.

-Logged onto Moose/IP account.
-Messed with warnable staff by suspending them and majorly screwing with their minerals/posts.
-Deleted several large topics. This means that for every post you had in a topic like Signature Request, you lost 16 minerals and 1 post count. If all of a sudden you're missing a lot of those, this is probably why.
-Wreaked other havoc behind the scenes.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2006-08-05 at 13:51:20
Furthermore, if yesterday's backup will be used, any posts made since then will disappear (including any future posts). Keep that in mind.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LegacyWeapon on 2006-08-05 at 14:25:56
I don't think he logged onto IP's account.

Changed Moose's information.
Deleted all topics of FAQ & Regulations forum.
Posted a news thread (locked).
Posted an announcement (deleted).
Moved several Null topics to Serious Discussion (moved back). This should have no effect on your post count.
Deleted most stickied topics. This has the largest effect on your post count.
Warned all warnable staff members (not admin and not gmod) and suspended them for around 2.5 years. Removed many, many minerals and posts. If you are still suspended because of the hacker please contact one of the admin or gmods to correct this.

so because everything is being compressed into a tiny space in a black hole, does that meant that there are particles smaller than electrons?

It means that we don't know everything.

Particles smaller than electrons exist. It was prooven long ago.

PwnPirate. You forget the fact, Cloning could be "FARMED". Like a massive field of clone farms. Did you expect that? Learning a technology is good. It always have uses later on.
Theres no proved FACT about this. We've never cloned a sentient life form.

It can be farmed however it still takes the natural gestation period of 9 months. Therefore if it was massively produced it would still take the time that it would for the same animal to have a normal child. Therefore it would not raise the population of the Earth by a significant amount and would not cause overpopulation. Babies are born without cloning, with cloning babies are still born at the same rate, it would basically be the same thing as a group of women having children, except at the same time. It would only change the pattern of our rate of population, but not the rate itself.
QUOTE
Theres no proved FACT about this. We've never cloned a sentient life form.

Example:
We don't have absolute solid evidence that the Earth has a molten core, but it obviously does.
And therefore to use something with so little basis such as the Earth not having a molten core in an argument about volcanoes would not work.

In other words I'm simply saying: It's better to use an argument with evidence, than an argument with no evidence.

Anyways it was obvious that Protoss_hero had no idea what he was talking about, so there's no reason to defend him.

Half the staff suspensions were in IP's name. I think he hacked Moose's account and used the ACP access to hack IP.

Religion: A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
Science: The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.

Let me know when you see a similary between these two.

Religion isn't about some supernatural being who created the universe. Many major religions out there don't even talk about the creation of the world. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam only barely touch on this subject; like only one page out of the Bible. Still, all 5 major religions out there in this world are about philosophy, teachings, morals.
I don't get why you ppl automatically assume that religion = absense of science. We might as well say that Math = Absense of History. Or that Loving dogs = Hating cats. Oh snap, let's just throw in two completely random subjects that have no relation to each other whatsoever and just declare them as opposites! Good idea ain't it?
Again as Beer said some time ago, it would REALLY be helpful that if you want to criticize religion, at least know a good amount of it.

But the question is, which one is more likely to be right. The one that just accepts things, or the one that accepts things using some sort of criteria.

I agree with that part. Infact, I strongly encourage any ideology to read about multiple religions. Because the more you read, and the more you learn about people, and the more you question, the more atheist you will become.

A good tip for the reading part would be to NOT start off with christianity, judaism, or islam. Save those for last.

Hello, im new to the world of map making, and modding and the such. However I fear I have come at the wrong time. Map makers are starting to retire i see, and now a hacker has gotten the site.
Have i come to late to be a map maker? ohmy.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2006-08-05 at 17:40:12
Nah. I'm a map maker, and so is my friend ThatCrazyGirl, and no it's not too late to become a map maker. The hacker was just a low-life who was able to guess somebody's pass. And besides, the hack into the account is probably just a rumor.

Anyway, welcome to the forums.

Also, I hope to be seeing some of your maps later on.

If what you're talking about is just the plain existence of a God, then yes I see where you're going. But my problem is that people are saying that because you are religious, you lack science. Religion isn't just about the plain existence of a God; it's also about the teachings and morals; the way you live your life. Stuff like this isn't about whether it's right or wrong; it's just your way of living life. Just the mere existence of something is something one can ponder about. However, that's not religion itself, because you can believe in a god and not be religious.

As far as that whole frozen image thing goes, it's because light is still bouncing off and approaching the viewer in an incredibly slow pace.

A person just doesn't get sucked into a black hole, they have to cross the horizon point. So if the sun were to turn into a black hole (even though it wouldn't), we would not be sucked in immediately, but we would probably die due to very low temperatures.

sounds more like philosophy to me. religion is different. philosophy doesnt tell you you will spend an eternity in hell if you dont have a personal relationship with jesus, whom u've never met.

and desperado...WHY DO U THINK I BELIEVE IN GOD? My 'they must be dummies' was obviously sarcastic.
