Well Lets just say that the Feedback icon is not Burst lasers and that it's graphics is not psi storm tongue.gif

Best explenation I can give you:

in the iscript it says "Cast spell" meaning it will emulate the feedback order, casting the feedback. If it were to use the weapons.dat entry, in the iscript it would specifically say "Useweapon (whatever weapon it is)". And the icon of a weapon is only the icon shown in the little blue box thing where it shows a normal unit, not in the button group.

Hope that clears it up a little?

Feature idea: Restore default settings for one entry, or add the ability to copy-paste between two .dats with the same name. That way, you could easily restore one unit to normal. When I try to copy-paste between mine and the default, it puts in entry 0 in every field.

You mean between two editors running at the same time? One-entry reload shouldn't be difficult, I'll think about it.

Just don't allow copy and pasting, that would result in too many cheapskates stealing parts of other people's mods... disgust.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ojan on 2006-08-18 at 16:10:54
You are quite limited on what you can do with mods, even though you have many options. Dats alone don't allow you to accomplish very great achievements. If your mod is original enough, people will remember it even if others "steal". I'm sure dozens have done similar things as BST has, yet his Doom mod will stand out forever in SCs history.

People need to lighten up. Every time you create something, you use sources in one way or another. That's one form of copying. Making the program more limited because someone might copy another persons oh so original idea with 9999 HP and 9999 shields on a marine that is mechanic is just insane.

No offence towards you, and I speak in general, not necessary as a direct answer to your post. I'm just tired of how the idea of "property" turns into pure madness.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TERRAINFIGHTER on 2006-08-18 at 16:23:15
I'm not saying copying the ideas, I simply meant copying whole units without any edits.

Example: imagine if you worked on an amazing graphic for a year +, then a group of people started using it in their mods as well without having to do any of the work, it helps their mods and only makes yours seem less original and more boring, thus ruining a perfectly good graphic.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ojan on 2006-08-18 at 17:40:11
If your work is creative enough you will be recognized. There aren't very many SC mods being made, so there aren't exactly unlimited resources to "steal" from. If your mod is original it will be remembered. Keep in mind that few are, since it is almost impossible to come up with a unique concept - you "steal" other peoples ideas. If I were to do an awesome medieval themed mod, the whole concept would still be 0% original.

Again, think of the doom mods. I'm sure many have copied ideas from it, yet it stands eternal. And surely, no restraints to prevent copying, and thus useability, should be made on DatEdit. If so, remove "BroodKiller" from the "about" dialoge and put in "Microsoft".

All the sfxdata.dat entries appear to be off by one...

(Ex. editing the entry for Zerg\Advisor\ZAdUpd000.wav [116] actually edits Misc\PPwrDown.wav [115).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Pie_Sniper on 2006-08-20 at 15:58:28
That's only at the beginning, they get more off as you go up. For some reasons, there are copies of some, like Misc\ZBldgPlc.wav, Bullet\TNsFir00.wav (1) and (2), Terran\Advisor\TAdUpd02.wav, and many others. I've wanted to post about this for some time, because it's very confusing. When I believe my marine should be playing the C-10 Canister Rifle sound, it plays the Arclite Shock Cannon sound!

I think what yall are looking at is the Sound Id# property, if so it isn't supposed to match up tongue.gif

there's some sound entries that use the same sound Id# as the one before it,
and the next one only goes up one because of it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2006-08-20 at 17:28:53
The numbers in brackets were the regular ID, not the sound file ID.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BroodKiller on 2006-08-25 at 15:15:38
Hmmm....makes me wonder: do you mean the Units Editor Sound tab or the Sound Editor? An important thing is that units.dat points to sfxdata.tbl, not to the sfxdata.dat file.

EDIT: Eat me up for this mistake, I plead guilty.
Also, about this "off by 1" thing. Read the hints first, before you accuse me of error cool1.gif

On another note...:

!)How do you that the "Rage" icon is the unused beta mind control?

@)You need to determine the meaning of the Floats(?) property better than you guys did here - I am not buying this, sorry.

#)Any volounteers for the orders.dat flags? I'm sorry, but again - I cannot accept the unknown10 explanation the way it looks now.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2006-08-25 at 15:45:34
I wasn't talking about the Units.dat sound tab. I was talking about how if I change what .wav file sfxdata.dat entry 116 points to, it actually changes what entry 115 points to.

Or am not understanding what you meant? blushing.gif

! - a group of users have re-released a working version of the beta version, he/she must've played it.

@ - I doubt he/she could get something like that wrong if it was tested it in-game, maybe you should try it yourself?
(the explenation meant that it removes the graphics when the unit cloaks, and places it again when the unit un-cloaks)

# - I never accepted it either, it has the main effect down but doesn't have the cause, so it's therefore mis-labelled.

Hokay, the thing is that the "Sound File" property is a pointer to a line in sfxdata.tbl file. The names of the entries in sfxdata.dat are just named after the sfxdata.tbl entry they point to. This property has nothing to do with the actual sfxdata.dat entry ID. The game engine reads the sfxdata.dat entry (linked from units.dat) for its "Sound File" property, looks up the line in sfxdata.tbl and then opens the WAV file with the name read from it, that's it.

In case I am missing something - is this just a general thought or does it cause real in-game problems?

Single Entry reload? So... Über... uberwoot.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kookster on 2006-08-27 at 15:18:28
i like the single reload it is sweet, i also have a question about it, could you make it so you can reload a specific part like unit hp or the weapon it was using yadda yadda?? i think that might be something useful too
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BroodKiller on 2006-08-28 at 15:15:22
Well, I easily can do reloading entire tabs, but as to reloading single properties...hmm...dunno. It is absolutely feasible, this is not the problem - the thing is if it will be at all useful?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lord_Agamemnon(MM) on 2006-08-28 at 15:24:17
I don't see it as too useful...remembering or looking up a single property's not too hard, but a whole tab of them is a pain in the #$%.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kookster on 2006-08-28 at 16:08:26
well i would find it useful since my computer doesnt like two datedits running at once mostly size issues

Screw you ppl for not letting me know that since v1.1 the Copy/Paste Tab feature is malfunctioning! ranting.gif A fixup is now under way.

As for reload tab...I don't think I will implement it, since it won't be used, just like the copy/paste tab feature. I even think of removing it from the future releases, because it poses a certain problem to make it work in the current interface design, as one property is spread into two tabs.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lord_Agamemnon(MM) on 2006-08-29 at 13:00:10
I think the "Annoyed" and "Yes" sound box labels in units.dat are reversed, since all of the sounds in the "Annoyed" fields have "Yes" in their name and all of the ones in the "Yes" fields have "Pss" in their name. So just switch the "Yes" labels with the "Annoyed" labels and everything should be fine.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kookster on 2006-08-29 at 15:38:09
dont get rid of it i use it no no no dont do that!!!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BroodKiller on 2006-08-29 at 15:45:55
The problem is that this feature does not work properly in over-1.1 versions of DatEd. I'll try to fix it, but I can't gurantee I will, so be prepared not to see it in the next fixup. Any other requests, people?
