Why would you want to protect your map anywase? to hide triggers? to have it so people dont copy your idea's? If every map had protection so you couldnt open it, I think majority of people wouldnt be map makers, and if you think im wrong, well thats how I learned how to make my first map, by opening other peoples maps to see what they did, it helps so many people, but when you guys try to hide it, nothing will grow, because people dont experiment with it, Just my opinion,

for 1 solution anyways, I know people have different reasons why they hate OSmaps hehehe =-] well anyways, Im neither for it, or against it.

because the advantages and disadvantages come out even... <-- if that made any sense? hahaha =]

The main point of protection is to prevent others from making multiple versions of the map for people to download on battle.net (Map Stealing and rigging are just added benefits of protection.), especially since most maps edited don't have their Map Name changed and will overwrite the original version.

On the other hand, simple, unprotected maps help newbie map makers with little to no map making experience learn how to map.

The benefits of protection, however, outweigh the benefits of unprotection as StarCraft is losing mappers every day, losing popularity, and will eventually die out (I'm estimating around mid 2007, StarCraft on battle.net will be dead).

so? OSMap stopped the credit revolution

OSMap was never needed to steal credit. NEVER. You'd know this you know the CHK.

Diablo 1 isn't even really that "dead"(It still has players, a good 2k on at once). Starcraft to go from peaking at over 100k to almost dead in less than a year? No.

Obviously, how would repairing the map based on how Starcraft reads it help at all? Protection alters the map so that it can only be read by Starcraft, so editing it based on Starcraft's reading method would accomplish absolutely nothing.

Whats ment by "Opening just like Starcraft" means this: OSMAP not getting fooled by protection. Once OSMAP gets all the sections it needs without getting fooled by protection then it must write out the data Staredit Compatible.

Once you buffer the CHK you can't just start editing random bytes. First you have to figure out where the bytes you want to edit are. Protection simply tries to confuse programs(besides starcraft), on where these bytes are.

which is acceptable by me. If you are smart enough to go in and change the name, you must be of fair calibur. Its people who arent of that calibur which make me upset.

The way i see this issue is that map protection doesnt make a bloody difference any more. If the data Starcraft needs is still there, the data the editor needs can be reasemmbled.

The only good use for map protection programs i ever found is with Warcraft 3 ones, which can freakishly cut down map size, and reformat the data so you get by the loading screen nicely much faster. The particular programs im thinking of are Widgetizer and Vexorian's Optimizer. Good stuff.

It's rather similar actually. And gives a plus on the topic itself, which is protection.
