So you choose units that you will eventually shoot? If not, I'm kinda confused.
I like the idea of having the ability to choose units you can shoot, though. Maybe at the start, have 6 basic units, 4 intermediate units, and 2 advanced units. Then let players choose two basic units to shoot at first. When the kill something their skill goes up (counted as ore or something). Then with enough ore, they can start to choose intermediate units as well. Then with even more ore they can choose an advanced unit to fire. To select the unit to fire, you could use a Shuttle system with 4 or 8 choices - each choice is 1 missile that you've chosen (you can later upgrade the shuttle to hold more missiles).
I dunno if any of that makes sense, but I figured I'd just throw it out there.
CODE
And the track would look like this:
[S] [S] [S] [S] [S]
[DA] [DA] [DA] [DA] [DA]
========================
uuu uuu uuu uuu uuu
Basically you'd select a missile by unloading a unit of the same name as the missile from your Shuttle. Then, you MC one of the targets (depicted as a "u" on the crappy diagram above) and the missile would shoot to that target killing all the units in its path, or having some other special effect. Also there could be some special levels that require units to be hit twice to be killed (like Trigger Happy D).
And possible missile types would be:
BASIC1. Scourge - Good for speed, but small 1x1 kill radius.
2. Wraith - Fast missile with a 2x2 kill radius.
3. Science Vessel - Big and fast with a larger 2x3 kill radius.
4. Guardian - Slow and medium sized with a 2x2 kill radius.
5. Battlecruiser - Slow and huge with a 4x4 kill radius.
6.
INTERMEDIATE1.
2.
3.
4.
ADVANCED1. Observer (Speed Upgrade) - Kinda fast that creates a bunch of explosions under it as it moves. Has a large 5x5 kill radius. And it can even kill special units (the ones that normally take 2 hits to be killed) with 1 hit.
2. Carrier - Not a killer. This missile just stops all the units it comes across with a 4x4 radius.
Man I like this idea. If you don't ant to use it, I'll probably turn this into a map myself. And now that I look at all the stuff you posted earlier, I realize this has nothing to do with the map you suggested...
