My idea is that it's the self-protection mechanism - it doesen't let you think that life is useless. Those who commit suicide have a weaker mechanism of protection. It lets them think life is useless. It allso lets them jump off buildings & cut their veins.
But I still think that there is a reason, besides the instinct - leave some trace of you being here. I accept this trace (memory) being not eternal - all who knew you died, the memory about you died. But wasn't that worth living for ?
