Pffft, I learned something from all of this. Thank you.

I'd go back and change my other post, but he proved me wrong and I'm too lazy to do that anyway.

Besides, 1000th post.

Good for you, as well as the rest of us. We learned something.

I think that it's high time to get back to the topic on hand.

Now that I've had a chance to get over my primary pissed off reaction to this whole patch, I sort of have a "meh" attitude. It's not as if we really lost anything guys.

Yoshi's right. True, it's a disappointing prospect to realize that we won't be getting any cool new features. But, on the other hand, we're not in an any worse position than a few weeks ago.

And thanks for giving my quote quotation marks.

But if maps with EUD can carry viruses then normal maps can carry viruses too. And I haven't heard anybody complaining about getting a virus from B.net.

EUDS CAN'T TRANSMIT VIRUSES.. Learn that now...

recently blizzard admitted to the stealthbot community that aslong as a third party program was not used maliciously it wasnt against the user agreement thing and i think sinch bwchart doesnt run directly with sc it does not violate anything, it just happens to uses the same files as sc wink.gif but calling PP a hack is pretty wicked. it has only positive uses so i find it to be fitting + many people in the higher ranks use bwscanner and pengiun plug to make the game more fair

It's just as wicked as saying that EUDs are illegal and dangerous.

QUOTE(Deathknight @ Aug 11 2005, 03:56 PM)
Rofl. Blizzard only patched the extended units being in the EUD triggers, nothing else, nothing...

I guess they chose to patch this and not some of the easily patchable hacks out there.

But it doesn't matter if they patched it or not. There are other methods...

When we find them, make a point not to tell the traitors to UMS mapping. UMS mapping is the only thing that popularised Starcraft, or made it better, above other games at first.

QUOTE
Yeah, they're both, "modifying is illegal" is in Starcraft's EULA.

Yeah, let's patch square terrain, that wasn't intended. Honestly, just because you think UMS mapping is gay doesn't mean you need to try to ruin it forever.

I'm not pissed at Blizzard anymore, I'm pissed at the people who are celebrating the fact it was patched.

lets get one thing straight. replays are never completly corrupted. you can always repatch if you feel the need to watch a replay
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MapUnprotector on 2005-08-11 at 22:29:45
That's too much of a hassle, and you can't really show replays to friends on battle.net because they need to downgrade too.

Patches are bad and deathknight should stop making blizzard patch SC.

dk isnt making them patch it. hes just looking at every knook and cranny of the game which since he purchased it isnt illegal. this is how the hot coffee mod got out for san andreas and instead of embrasing the free pub blizzard would get its tossing it to the side. there is a program that will auto repatch for you (x7 changer) so it isnt that difficult. however you cant use bnet unless you are on the most current patch, which means you would have to send reps via an instant message etc.

also the thing about being able to upload any file into a map is total crap. even if someone was stupid enough to upload a virus, there is no way to call that file into memory with sc, malware cant work unless it is executed

It seems simple enough to me for anyone who hates their replays being ruined to keep two versions of Starcraft on their computer: one for replays and one for battlenet play. Now if any Melee player has ever used X-tra editor, he happens to be just as wrong as someone who will remain nameless thinks EUD's etc. are. You used manipulated software. I guess I'll burn in Hades with Deathknight for abusing my license to play Blizzard's precious game.
As for creativity being shot by having MORE options, that's like saying I lose creativity every time I learn something new at school. I have more options that make me more of a robot. Wish I'd stayed home all those years and played Mario Bros. rather than lose my creativity.
If it makes your head spin, no one says you have to use it. THere were still quite a few good options for map makers without using EUD's.
Hey, nameless person: have any mp3's on your computer? I'll play melee with you in Hell then. Have any burned copies of movies? Where'd you get that picture of some guy taking off his shirt? Did you take it yourself with your digital camera? Do you have a license to use what someone else created? Why harass the illegal use of something harmless (that's right-NO viruses) and something that would increase the popularity of an already great game? Go become a prosecutor of j-walkers. They need more of your kind around.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2005-08-11 at 22:39:42
then why don't you just keep two versions of your starcraft with one that is compatible with EUD and the other is for battle.net play.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Grouty on 2005-08-11 at 22:41:45
euds are intended more for multiplayer not for single. wouldnt work out well

PLUS we could just Actually mod the game in that case

(i dont understand how so many people are for an auto-modder but completly against euds)

replays tend to better when watched with other people. point proven.

Honestly, people think "the only good starcraft is melee, so i'll do my best to f*** the ums community."

A new patch is out, and it fixes one issue only. A bug recently discovered that could cause the game to crash, and also posed a serious security issue for Battle.net

A recently discovered bug has recently been patched. Unfortunately the bug, that promised much for the UMS community, is no more. There was much speculation if this bug could or not be used in harmful ways at SEN, until  superpenguin found one. We promptly reported it to Blizzard and one week later the bug was fixed with today's patch. We kept it quiet for obvious reasons until now.

The UMS community did lose a useful tool, as this bug permitted them some nifty legitimate UMS functionality.  DeathKnight, who found the bug that was patched, had this to say on the matter:

"I didn't expect for Blizzard to patch it so quickly, specially something that was so harmless in my mind initially; but then some of us realized that after midnight, the bug could turn into a nasty gremlin. Anyway that is only one of the various methods to allow Starcraft Triggers to contain almost the same functionality as Warcraft III triggers."

As usual the Battle.net team acts quickly when it is a security issue. We really should thank them for up keeping this old game of ours and still listen to us. It should also be an encouragement for more people to report specific hacks and abuse at hack@blizzard.com. They do listen and the do take action. Their time frame may not be to our liking but this last patch 1.13b is sound proof that they do not sleep when our game or battle.net is at risk.

EUD's CAN be used in ways that pose a security risk. Just exactly what hasn't been revealed but it could be anything ranging from crashing SC to uploading viruses.

Yes... I did just register to make people aware of this.

You know nothing about what happened with SC : ghost do you? It wasn't sold to Swingin' Ape Studios.... Blizzard BOUGHT Swingin' Apes. SA now works for blizzard.

P.S. its spelled "sold"

i dont think that was made whit EUDs bcause EUD dont run exes it handle the dat as i been heard it was just a normal map whit a virus that auto run some how the ohter day some1 posted a map whit a virus inside the mpq and he was scared to play it, and that map wasnt made whit eud just a regular map

Frankly, Blizzard must have had a damn good reason for patching this, if they would turn down a way to rejuvinate SC for it. I still think they found something that could have been truly dangerous while looking into the EUD triggers and decided to patch it before we discovered it.

Edit: I'm REALLY tired, let me reword my post better.

Most likely Penguin found that with EUDs you can create a buffer overflow with starcraft. With a buffer overflow, a hacker can potentially execute malicious code, a virus. I'm pretty sure this is what he found and if he really did you all damned better be happy Blizzard patched it! If they didn't and someone else discovered how to cause a buffer overflow anyone who played the map would him would be in quite jeapordized.

Isn't your main problem with the whole issue the patch ruining your replays? Aren't you being hypoctitical by praising the person who might have been the actual reason for blizzard patching this?

It's in french but it say all. Blizzard is working on something... Or they patch everything they can...

Wrong.
Oringally Nihilistic was making Starcraft:Ghost with Blizzard overlooking the project.
Nihilistic kept doing a bad job, and Blizzard kept on delaying it.
Eventually Blizzard took Nihilistic off the project and gave it to Swingin Apes.'

Blizzard then acquired Swingin apes on the first day of E3 since well.... I guess they have been doing a great job with Sc.
This gave blizzard 40 new programmers for the console and to do console games\ports.
