Staredit Network -> Games -> Old School RPGs

Ya, I know FF2=FF4 and FF3=FF6. And that FF5 wasn't release cause it was too hard or something. (I don't know 100% on the FF5 part though, might've not been released for another reason) Because I played FF5, and it was a lot harder than FF4 and FF6.

Anyways, the main reason why people find the 1st few RPG's they've played as the best, is because the games themselves bring back good memories. I'm not saying it's the ONLY reason, just saying it might be the main one. Every time I so much as listen to FF7 Sound track, it's like 100% nostalgic. I can remember just flat good times of me at the age of 12 having fun playing the game. That's it.

Yes, the NES games were very good sellers. However, around the SNES era Square made a few flops like Live a Live and Rudora no Hihou. Around the Playstation era they did okay too, not too many bad games although FF8 was widely accused to be crap because FF7 was so revolutionary.

The PS2 era is where Square began to stink. The company invested a lot of money into a small technology group which they based in Hawaii which was called Square USA, which made the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The movie was a big flop, a big waste of money and a really bad business decision.

Some time after that, they were bought out by Enix.

Pretty sad too, if they had a movie that made more sense they might still be making them now.

That isn't the point. Square Enix was formed only recently. For around 15 years the two companies have been competing, with Square doing horribly.

I'm pretty sure the point of what you quoted from me was about how Dragon's Quest was no competition for Final Fantasy.

You said, "I read all of that, they do not know what they are talking about, Dragon's Quest cannot be competition for Final Fantasy because it was made by the SAME COMPANY."

The two games were not made by the same company until the recent merger of Square and Enix. Simple, no?

Dragon Quest sells much more than Final Fantasy in Japan. Until recently, the Japanese games market was focused more on Japan than the US. Now there are a lot more gamers in the US and the only big sellers in Japan are Dragon Quest, hentai games and a few random titles like Sangoku Musou and Devil May Cry (to cite recent sales). Final Fantasy sells moderately, but nowhere near the amount that DQ does. Megami Tensei is doing really poorly, too.. It's a good thing that Atlus and Capcom have a strategic alliance.

But first, I ask you this: How long have you been playing RPGs? Because if you're a retro gamer, you'd know that Square and Enix were long time rivals before Square was cruelly bought out by Enix.

That's not totally true. Chrono Trigger, widely considered one of the best RPGs ever and made in 1995, was written and designed by the top people from Enix. The programming, music, and publishing was done by Square. So I don't think things were that tense between Square and Enix if they were able to make such a great game together.

That was a typing accident. I meant to say IS and not WAS.

Why didn't you edit the post, then?

Well, since I feel like this could be a topic about Old School RPGs and not just about Squeenix I'll bring up the best RPG ever. D&D. It's also a "true" role-playing game, because you can actually play the role of your character. I brought it up since it's old, it's an RPG, and since there hasn't been anything restricting discussion to video games in this topic, it works. I still say NetHack and Rogue are ownage.

Yep, D&D is the granddaddy of all RPGs. I'm even making a Final Fantasy I themed D&D campaign...
