Staredit Network -> Games -> Old School RPGs
Report, edit, etc...Posted by D_Scypher on 2005-03-03 at 22:45:52
I haven't noticed a lot of RPG fans here and I haven't noticed a lot of old school gaming fans here, but I don't care. Let's talk about the damn good classics.

A little while ago I busted the SNES from under my bed and started a new game of Chrono Trigger. I still think that is one of the best effin' RPGs ever. I hadn't played it in years and yet my fondest memories of gaming came back like tidal waves of deja vu when I found myself staying up late at night, telling myself I'll finish after this quest when I really knew I couldn't.

Chrono Trigger is one of those games you could play over and over again, because it hardly ever gets tedious and you can't help but get drawn in by the characters. I got tired of GTA: San Andreas, the game that boasted freedom and unending action, before I went back to play CT, a pretty linear turn-based and text-driven game, for maybe the sixth time.

It was one of those gems that come by only so often. I learned only recently that it was through the programming and musical expertise of Square and the amazing character and plot design of Enix was this game made. And, shit, this was actually the first RPG I ever played so I'd always hoped everything else would be just as good. Yet the RPGs I've played today haven't been as memorable, maybe because the original generation of game designers are gone and the new generation is more concerned about how a game appeals to demographics and the pretty cutscenes and all that - and I think that's why it's harder now to find a game with as much "soul" as it has graphical and gameplay beauty.

So, anyone else have memories of the good 'ol days of gaming experiences? On the SNES, PSOne, Dreamcast, maybe even the NES? Or even the way RPGs seem to be going today?

I remember, once, playing Dragon Warrior on my old NES and (myself being quite young at that time) accidentally walking right into a pit of doom and death.

Also, an 'old-school RPG' that I remember quite well is The Legend of Zelda III: Link to the Past.

Oh man, Secret of Mana and Seiken Densestu 3 (import only) kicked ass!! But the best back then's gotta be a tie between Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3

I beat it.

FF3 is my fave old-school RPG of all time. It's just so epic. Even Chrono Trigger just doesn't have the same feel.

FF3 was... Argh I can't decide. I don't know why but CT comes first in my mind. Just can't ignore the fact that me and my friend were never able to find any copy in the store, and we rent it like 20 times just to play it.

SD3 also owned. Graphics were awsome, and the fact that you could have so many different setups was glorifying.

PS -- I'm still playing CT even on my PS today tongue.gif

I have to say that Chrono Trigger was the best. I beat it only once but still play it over and over again. Lavos interior is so hard! Even when I was lvl 75... Anyway, I didnt really like FF3, in my opinion it just wasnt as good as CT. Mario of course was awesome, and Kirby super star was also up there with CT. I remember playing Kirby with my little brother and his friend. I was always Kirby, they switched off bein my helper. biggrin.gif

There is actually a thing about the FF games. Since FF1 in Japan never came out in America, FF3 came to America as FF1, so FF1 is actually FF3. So whoever says they like FF1 because it was the first to come out. They are wrong. smile.gif
So.... To clear things up. FF1 is FF3, FF2 is FF4, FF3 is FF5, FF6 was considered to hard for American gamers and was not released in America, FF7 demo was released on the Nintendo 64, and then Squaresoft left Nintendo in favor of a better game system, Playstation. FF7 was then released for the playstation. That should clear up any confusion.

FF7 is NOT better than FFX, FF7 was the start of 3D FF games so thats why it holds a special place in the staff members of Square Enix and the gamers who want to suck up to them. That started a bandwagon of people loving FF7 as the best game because thier friend loves it. FF7 does NOT have a better storyline, it does NOT have better gameplay, oh. and it does NOT have better graphics. wink.gif
Whoever doesn't agree, didn't read all of my post. wink.gif

You are wrong. FF1us is the Japanese FF1. FF2us is FF4, yes, but FF3us is FF6. FF5 was never released in the US until Final Fantasy Anthology. FF4 was considered too hard for americans, so they released a simplified version without some abilities like Cecil's Dark Wave. There wasn't an FF7 demo for the N64, it was a demo with three characters from FF6 showing off the 'capabilities' of the N64. The game that was released on the Playstation was NOT the N64 demo that was showcased.

That is COMPLETELY wrong.
Final Fantasy was made by a desperation attempt for square but it turned out it never turned out to be the "Final" Final Fantasy due to its popularity, FF1 was never released in America, around the release of Final Fantasy 2 they decided to make an english version, it was too late for FF2 because FF2 was already almost done and it would be much too hard to translate it because of the thousands of lines of text. Thus, FF3 was Released in America. The demo was for FF7 and I dont know what you are smoking.

They left Nintendo because the N64 didn't have much capabilities at all, you should do some research on this.
The rest is explained in my last post.

I read all of that, they do not know what they are talking about, Dragon's Quest cannot be competition for Final Fantasy because it is made by the SAME COMPANY.

What the crap are they talking about?

I think you're a bit confused. What is the source of your data? I know for a fact that mine is correct.

But first, I ask you this: How long have you been playing RPGs? Because if you're a retro gamer, you'd know that Square and Enix were long time rivals before Square was cruelly bought out by Enix.

Also, FF1us is not FF3j. FF5 was never brought to the US until Final Fantasy Anthology on the PSX. Those are, quite plainly, facts. I have a website that is a credible source while all you've done is claim that my source is wrong and you're right while not presenting any of your data.

When I quoted the word capabilities, it was meant to be sarcastic. I am sorry if I confused you.

It is wise to take facts regarding video games from the Wikipedia, since many Wikipedians are avid gamers.

How about older than that? I <3 Rogue + Roguelike games and nethack. Super Mario RPG fron SNES was fun.

As far as FF games goes, I know I like all of the ones I've played. 1,2,3,6,7,8,10. I think that's right anyway, could've played 5 but never really was motivated enough to get past the very beginning. I'm positive the FF6j is FF3 in the us.

Right now that doesn't matter. I'll explain, say you were a company that was rivals with another company. If you got a hold of thier best seller would you franchise it or force it to die? That would be just.... stupid.

That isn't the point. Square Enix was formed only recently. For around 15 years the two companies have been competing, with Square doing horribly.

Squaresoft really wasn't doing that bad, considering their success with the early Final Fantasy games.

Yes, the NES games were very good sellers. However, around the SNES era Square made a few flops like Live a Live and Rudora no Hihou. Around the Playstation era they did okay too, not too many bad games although FF8 was widely accused to be crap because FF7 was so revolutionary.

The PS2 era is where Square began to stink. The company invested a lot of money into a small technology group which they based in Hawaii which was called Square USA, which made the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. The movie was a big flop, a big waste of money and a really bad business decision.

Some time after that, they were bought out by Enix.
