You can already... If you try to play a non-wav file with the play wav action, it will still try to play that file (therefore accessing it)...

Good point. I feel safer with the EUD now, thanks Legacy, that cleared up a few worries in my mind.

Someone gave me a starcraft map with a trojan in it he said that it will execute the virus if map is started by doing something with wavs. I never started the map because i didnt wanna get a trojan, but i checked it with WinMPQ and there was a trojan in it!!! I put the map on attachment incase anyone wants to look at it.

Anyone mind telling me what kind of trigger can state a players name?

Any way to make triggers that force battle.net actions to be performed by the players?, or any way to make a map whisper someone?, or stuff along those lines?...

idk how the exe is supposed to work.. i mean what oppening it in game??
Report, edit, etc...Posted by lil-blood on 2005-08-06 at 11:51:29
I think he made the exe run as a wav or something. I'm really not sure at all.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2005-08-06 at 12:14:48
This has nothing really to do with extended triggers, they don't effect wavs. In fact, the initial concerns had absolutely nothing to do with wavs, but instead changing the data so it runs a virus, which was confirmed impossible. This, on the other hand, is changing what the wav trigger targets to be opened, an exe in the MPQ. You think Blizzard has never heard of a hex editor? Come on, it's not going to be THAT easy. Get sources and evidence before making claims. Tell me, how the HELL would he make a virus run if ti's not on your hard drive? It's not "changing it with extended triggers", it's using an MPQ viewer to insert a virus executable into the MPQ. You'd have to manually extract it and run it to get "virus'd". You people have killed my faith in humanity.

I don't know what you are saying but you sound intelligent. Plus I never said I totally believed him I had doubts but I didn't want to take the risk.

well SORRY wilhelm if we all aren't uber programers and we don't really care to learn everything about this stuff. We just want to know that sum1 out there can't give us a virus from playing a map. I don't know alot about "anything" and I'm sure this subject has crossed the mind of Blizzard, but I also know that freetime+kid+more_freetime+computer+way_2_much_freetime=anything.
But no you're right, we don't deserve you're faith.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2005-08-06 at 17:54:26
First off, if it does contain a virus, or a trojan, take it off downloads and just tell people to PM you for it, ok?

Second, it can't run without you using WinMPQ or similar to extract it, or run it through that.

Lets try this a fun way; think of it as a Sexually Transmitted Disease.

Someone may have a disease and to them it cannot do anything, them being a carrier, however if you a stupid enough to have sex without protection and get this disease you'll be infected, but for that to happen you'd first have to have sex with them, and unprotected.

The someone is the Map, the sex is running the actual .exe file within the MPQ and the protection is not opening it with WinMPQ but trying to use Starcraft.

Hmmm it kinda works, but more than that, was fun to write!

This is.. scary.. I would rather have blizzard patch it then viruses be in maps.

We have all had our fun with the "Extended Triggers" Thanks to Deathknight.

But now, some wonderful friend has to take it too far and actually put a virus in the map. It is true, viruses can be put in maps with them, so blizzard is patching it INSTANTLY. Was a fun discovery, now its going to be gone.

Seriously, once again, I would have blizzard patch Extended Triggers then having to into battle.net and dodging viruses. Whew, I'm going to stick with private games (with only people I TRUST) until it is patched.

I was also getting sick of people hosting all these crazy maps with shields in them and not even giving Deathknight credit, they kept saying "I found these triggers, my friend Bob101 found them" (in wierd arena maps, and rpgs with heroes that have shields)

It was fun testing Uber Edit, I actually felt like an expert on this stuff with all the great trigger options it had! Thanks to LegacyWeapon for all the hard work he put in his trigger manager (which is now going to be gone cry.gif ).

R.I.P. Extended Triggers (aka EUD, whatever you want to call them)

Well, looks like me and DK have more glitches to find in 1.13B/1.14 crazy.gif

Wow, 2 patches DK. You are the man. I can't wait to tell my brother again, whos now in Japan. (I told him how you forced the 1.13 patch, he played sc) If DK wasn't alive, Patch 1.14 wouldn't be out until like, 2007. Now its coming tomorrow.[or 1,2,3,4 days, even tonight]

The map posted above has nothing in it. Server.exe is actually a renamed wav file. Nothing strange about it. No extended unit deaths were used in that map.

... I thought people just got through saying that you can't get a virus from playing a map, or opening it with the editor, you have to open it with WinMPQ or something...

But it is still possible for a virus to be in a map. Some idiot sent a map to blizzard, as DK told me on MSN. It contained a virus, so blizzard is patching it now.

Misinformed information is most likely. I still don't see how it is possible to get put a virus and install it on the computer.

Even if you put one in, it will never be used...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Oo.Mo0.oO on 2005-08-07 at 01:57:51
I talked directly to someone in the tech area, and they stated there was no patch planned. Viruses can not be added with EUD, so get the **** off of this topic.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2005-08-07 at 09:24:10
I've received information from a different source, and apparently it can. By "tech area", do you mean the channel Blizzard Tech Support, where the Blizzard representatives know nothing about Starcraft?

So... viruses can be transmitted using EUD's?

Will it mess up the "Power Overwhelming" cheat? And is the "Power Overwhelming" cheat directed to a player or to all players in a multi-player game?

Could this possibly crash the game?

You can put anything into a StarCraft map. You could put a StarCraft map into a StarCraft map if you wanted, but it obviously wouldn't run the second map. It's an MPQ archive, SCM/SCX just holds the CHK and the sounds, but you can put anything into it. The questions is whether or not you can make anything malicious you put in it run, and it seems that the asnwer is no which is reassuring.

I was refering to Death triggers in the news post, but viruses may be possible through other little glitched triggers.
