I think that's what the whole argument was kind of about.
I've gotta side with Chu here. The Snake/Otacon ending is the real one, though I'm not saying that Meryl died for sure, you really never know with that kooky Hideo.

I'm not going to bother arguing this matter any further. I find the person who wrote that FAQ to have at least some knowledge after writing several pages of MGS history. You do bring up an interesting point however, that Otacon is alive and well in MGS2 AND 4, so it would make sense to believe Meryl had died. However, perhaps there's more to the story, than both of us know.
I wish MGS4 used those FPS sections. They were amazing because they used IRONSIGHTS, had no gauges of health or ammo of any kind AND the fact that the atmosphere is chaotic with bullets being sprayed and the destroyed environment.

In EGM magazine they "confirm" the characters, although EGM is about as trustworthy as, something that isn't trust worthy. They said from left to right:

Snake was 30'ish in 1964 (I dont know the exact age) so if MGS4 occurs 2030'ish then 'Big Boss' (aka Snake) would be 100 years old and Ocelot would be about 90.
Seeing as Solid Snake was born in 1972 and he looks about 50-60 years old I'm inclined to believe this takes place during 2020-2030 ranges.
I'm also inclined to believe the cellular degeneration theory aswell, especially after seeing that Otacon looks much younger than Snake when in MGS1 they looked about the same age, if anything Otacon was a few years younger than Snake.

I played the game through like 6 times, I got the Meryl ending the first time and 4th time I played. So I know about both endings and have read about them.
