Is that much RAM really neccisary?
I make due fine with 512, but 1024 would be adequate for almost anything I can think of.

2 GB of Ram is going to soon be the standard for gaming (only 1 GB right now). Wow Alienware has low latency memory, and it's pretty good, it's not quite as fast as Corsair XMS (my personal favorite) or the high ends of OCZ, Geil, or Kingston. Of course, it'd be more than adequate for your uses. I personally just do not like the lack of choices Alienware has to offer. Some companies offer better video cards than their competitors, and only one motherboard to choose from?

Fela, Alienware has ultra-low latency memory. 2GB ultralow is about the same as 4GB low. Over 500MHz happy.gif

Pfft, I keep my computer updated based on the games I play. (Maybe it's the other way around)
Like for instance, when Starcraft 2 (if) comes out and is a high end computer grade requiring a better video card than a GeForce4 440 X(I think that's what it's called) then I'll most likely update...

I'm doing fine with my 8mb ram and 256mb computer...no...it only costed two of my other computers price combined. I think it was about 3500-4000 dollars for that piece of junk.

But seriously, my computer is about 3 years old. It has 512 ram, 120 gig and 3.2 gigahertz. It is good enough for me, it doesn't run games slow and works fine with the programes that I have. This one costed me about $1200. The only game that it can't run was Battlefield 2. It just freezes after the beginning my graphic card needs upgrading. This one is custom built. Like many other have said, buy a custom built one, they cost less.

I'm looking at the Aurora 5500. Maybe you're looking at something else, but this DDR-400 (@ 400 MHz) PC3200 memory has a latency of 2-3-2-5, not quite as good as Corsair 3200XL's 2-2-2-5. Still, I can't see any noticable difference between the two (even though the Corsair is, by a margin, faster).

One stinking motherboard: Alienware

One stinking type of memory: Alienware

Ok, I must say that I was surprised at Alienware's surprisingly low prices. They're nearly... decent, but with the lack of choices... I wouldn't go with them. And I've heard absolutely horrid things about their tech support.

You're trying to replace a 6 month old computer!? Don't waste your money like that.

Your PC running at 2.8Ghz and 512MB RAM is excellent by today's standards. You don't need 3.6Ghz and 4GB RAM to run games.
My regular computer is a Dell from 2001 is 1.6Ghz, 384MB RAM and 128MB Video memory. It can run WoW just fine.
The other computer is a e-machines from 2004 at 2.98Ghz, 1GB RAM and 256 MB Video Memory and it sucks. At first the performance on it was insane, but now my dad has put so much crap on it and it probably has so much background programs on it that it lags about 4x as more as my Dell.

Chances are that your PC is lagging because of so much things you have running at once. Just delete everything that you don't use or isn't necesary, defragment your harddrives, check for viruses and spyware and always close all those innecesary background programs.
With a computer like the one that you have, it's much more efficient to just buy some more RAM and/or Video Memory. If you're worried about Harddrive space, then you could just buy an external one(s). I've seen 120GB drives for about $80.

Well, the thing is, I've come to the decision that I would like to have my own, computer. Which is why I'll most likely be purchasing this one:

Well, this is the comuter I would like to purchase. It's quite awesome!

Only thing is, Temp, you were right... It's hard to find a decent compuiter with a monitor. But, I will look around at a few computer shops...

Anyway, here are the specs:

Oh yeah, it's selling for around $800-$950 (Depening on rebates... etc...)

But there is a lack of a graphics card. For like any type of gaming, you'd have to whip out another $150 or more.

I'd try to go with this set-up:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
1 GB memory
250 GB hard drive
256 mb GeForce 6800 GS

Just make sure the motherboard has integrated sound (usually good enough nowadays, though without the bells and whistles of a real sound card), and you'll be set to go.
