How would a homeless guy gain something like that and because hes homeless wouldnt he try to sell the button?

It's hypothetical, use your imagination.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2006-02-23 at 01:48:18
I dunno if I'd push it. I do think there's a 99.995% chance that hes a maniac and is lying.

There's no reason any sane person would push that button. A better question would be "Would you push the button?" Given the same scenario, except the hobo didn't tell you what the button did. Assuming things like instant death are possible in your scenario, then you can also assume invinciblity, infinite money, etc things are possible. So if that were the case, would you push the button, not knowing the effects?

If the button will actually kill the whole entire race of humans, pushing or not-pushing wouldn't make a difference really to the human race. If you did push it, we're dead, we're gone, we have lost consciousness of everything and no one would be alive to care about what happened. Only that the earth of plats and animals wouldn't be under any more threat from our pollution and globalisation.

The Really Big Button That Doesn't Do Anything

Hmm... maybe that button DOES do something..... like kill some poor guy somewhere.....

I'm really confused at how 8 people voted yes. Voting yes would mean you're going to be pushing a button of which would then destroy the WHOLE Earth and every living creature on it. cry.gif Including you, your parents, your siblings, your relatives, your friends, your enemies, and SEN. sad.gif

Moose is probably developing the button and searching for who will take the blame for destroying south america or something; I doubt it would really kill everyone tongue.gif.

Anyway, probably no. If in the middle of my life I become completely miserable (unlikely), then I might. My thinking would be 'The world sucks completely. I'm doing everyone a favor'.

Yeah, because that isn't obvious enough. Stop playing the 'omg this is beyond my limited comprehension of variance in personal outlooks on the world' approach. You're not going to guilt anyone into changing their vote.

I'd push it...for being curious on what it does tongue.gif. But on some people that have said it'll do nothing i'll believe it until I can see some technology capable of destroying everyone in 1 push of a button...

Yes. 'nuff said.

*Zombie slowly pushes the button when no one is looking.

Little do all of you know.. I have secretely stabilized a match box full of protons, and with a single push of a button I can make them all positively charged again, to rip apart the entire earth. (matchbox full of protons = 10x gravity of earth)

Eventually curiousity would overcome and I would dismantle the button to see how it worked... pinch.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-02-24 at 20:35:15
Or you could realize that it is impossible to kill everyone instantaneously so the the button can't actually kill everyone. I'd push it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ZPD on 2006-02-24 at 20:53:23
I think the fact the man suggested it would destroy everyone on the Earth is irrelevant. Even if it was a smartly dressed business man I wouldn't do it. It seems to me to be a simple psychology test. Why would you press any button presented to you by a stranger? Why would you trust a stranger? Most people would be less inclined to trust a homeless man than someone with a suit, but either way there is no reason to perss the button. The idea of shoving humans to extinction serves to complicate the decision for those who tend to be more inquisitive and therefore feel an attraction towards pressing the button. However, the alleged result would be irrelevant if the person wouldn't be inclined to press a button presented to them at random (like me).

I think if the homeless man said that pressing the button would do nothing but make him stop asking you, you'd get a very different result in the poll as there is an incentive for everyone to press it.

The second I heard what it does, I would steal it from the dude and press it as many times as I can until I die.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Merrell on 2006-02-25 at 12:01:53
Or until your hand goes numb tongue.gif.

Scientifically it's not going to happen, ZPD, but this is just a 'what if' type of question.. not being real or anything.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by warhammer40000 on 2006-02-25 at 13:30:21
I would probably thought the guy was insane and pushed it as a laugh. But I might've just kept it, said "thanks", and put it in some drawer.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ninebreaker on 2006-02-25 at 19:06:58
I would, because if i didnt it would bother me for the rest of my life, "Would it really have blown the earth up?" I may even dedicate my whole life to finding out if it would, just to know...

But as we all know:

"Curiosity killed the cat"
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2006-02-25 at 19:20:42
you know, it's a yes to me, because itend to drop things. and they usually fall on the button part. it'd be pressed accidentally. and we'd all die. MWAHAHa MWAHAHAHA so i voted yes.

Fear not, because bush is in search of this wmd to take from the hands of terrorists.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cloud on 2006-02-28 at 19:25:05
I'd push it, just to see what would happen. If it killed everyone including me..So be it.
