I think everyone on this thread is misunderstanding the saying. I think that saying applies to your learning and experience with something. It's just another way to say "learn from your mistakes". In that case, I think it's true.
Unless, of course, your talking about Slipknot. In their case, they died about a month after they came out with that CD (I'm referring to Pulse of The Maggots).
