I believe it was made by Heimdal and somehow Archn tricked Heimdal into giving him a copy and then released it as his own.

The way to keep protected is easy.  Make the maps so hard and complexly triggered that only you know how to edit them.  Thats what I do.

Exactly, when you're done making a map make a dtabase of what the trigegrs are and keep that for yourself, and comment all the trigegrs like unknown~unkown!1, unknown~unkown!2, unknown~unkown@1. Etc. Something liek the MPQ uses.

u know, theres only 1 good thing about a map unprotecter, if u made a booboo in ur map, and u need to fix it, but u protected the map, thats when the unprotecter becomes usefull. this is the ONLY reason it's good.

I don't mind any unprotector at all... Who wants to hide techniques and triggers from other map makers who want to learn? If you get upset when someone steals your map and if you make maps to gain popularity and fame... what a mistake that is... IMO. Maps should be made with the intent of neutraility upwards to positive benefit. IMO again. Just a lil chit chattin of course.  tongue.gif

I'm part of the minority that supports map unprotection.

While everybody will moan about this program, I think that it has the potential to do both harm and good.

The argument about Trigger Editor being used to see how a map works is not a good one. Simply looking at a trigger is not going to help a newbie mapmaker much - they need to be able to relate the trigger to an event or location in the game, and in order to understand the mechanics of triggering it's best if they edit the triggers to see what effects are produced. If you say that you can get good enough help here on SEN, then I guess it works for some people, but it doesn't for others. When I was learning SEN didn't really help - I had to experiment with editing the maps of others to actually understand the concepts behind triggering. It's all very well reading a list of triggers that someone tells you to make in the forum post or tutorial, but you're much less likely to glean any useful understanding.

Looking at and editing triggers in a map and watching what happens is the best way to learn, in my opinion. It's learning by example, and trial and error.

As for map stealers - they're fools and I do not advocate map-stealing at all. I just think that this program is not the mapmaker's anathema like everybody seems to think it is.
Make it so it crashes when you save in StarEdit, then you could prevent Map Stealing xD

what truely gets me is how people want to work so hard on making these programs, yet there are many sucky maps they unprotect and call theirs. Why dont they make something revolutionary instead of programming that takes hours and hours?

To all ppl, who think Open source Maps are good:

IMO, open source maps are only good IF 100% of the SC community would be Fair, and only open maps for learining purposes. But until there's atleast 1% of people who Steal maps, protection is required.

I think, if no one can override OSMAP, we should search for a compromise with OSMAP creators, so they atleast make the unprotected map openable, but unsaveable, so ppl can't steal it..

Well one big problem about this whole mess is how easily Starcraft can be manipulated.

Be honest, how much of Starcraft have we altered? (not including third-party mods like Doom Dragoon)

1) 8million hp reaver, 255 instant upgrades, 65335 base damage
2) Square Terrain, Null Terrain, Extended Terrain
4) Stacking
5) Being able to have an editor that allows you to place Terran, Zerg, and Protoss for the same player!!!
----

In short, we take so much for granted of how easily Starcraft is manipulated for our purposes. Some people suddenly got an idea to use this flaw/gift in Starcraft for unprotecting. sad.gif

Of course, we can't ask Blizzard for help, because if they did fix the flexibility of Starcraft we might lose our privileges (like EUDs).... It's a lose-lose situation.

I was refering back to the time of EUDs. My point was that Blizzard didn't seem to like us screwing around with its flaw (messing with unit attacks)... if we complain about this problem to Blizzard, it might use it as a way to make SC less flexible, and take away many of our little "perks" we take for granted, like square terrain.

Also, upon further thought, I don't think Blizzard would do anything considering protection usually is associated with the non-Blizzard campaign editors.

I used to do that before all these editors came out.
- Place your units
- Remove all units for that player
- Change the player's race (Units aren't there, so it wont complain about changing race)
- Undo. OMG THEY'RE BACK.

1. Agreed, but i think the term is mor harm than good. But still some very rare good for those willing to look at it that way. IMO: If your rational enough to think that you should already understand everything but hypers and switches. Those need some time....

2. Not agreed.....

You underestimate the mind of inexperianced immoral and immature 8-12 year olds that inhabit starcraft. Ive seen people that were 16 act 7.

My point here is alot of people are buying the game and starting out. Some will play it for 4 months and never pick it up again. Ive seen it all happen, from various types of gamers. However in 4 months alot of maps could be stolen. And lets say we find a way so that OSMap cannot unprotect maps using new protection, then it will happen like this:
Old Uber Map from Famouse Map Maker (Old Protection)
N00b uses OSMap
N00b changes name and slight cosmetics to make it look slightly edited but in his mind a new map.
N00b then uses new protection, and the map is farked.
No one on SC cares but SEN does.

Thats it plain and simple.

Well, for one, I do use other people's maps for referencing to some triggers that I need help on, like Variable random item stuff, speed, woodenfires insane terrains blink.gif or virtual hp for my maps. Even though they are on the forums under concepts, it's always easier to do it hands on, I think. Of course, I always do give full credits, so I dont think I'm a leecher... do you?

Had to get back on this.....

While the Big B sees what we do as 'creative' in some views they do not in others. To them our little editors are 'flawed' and 'inferior' (LOL) to their included one. I bet if you asked some of the people that worked on SCs map editor what they thought of maps today personally, theyd like it. Others would shun what we do. I think Blizzard knows as well as we do that map makers are a huge part of the battle net community that are vital for it to run, and upsetting us is upsetting battle net.

But could i call them up, speak with someone 'important' and inquire about EUDs? Nope because no large company cares that much about what anyone has to say.

This OSMAP seems like a pretty obvious invention. If Minimoose is correct in the way that it functions, then that's how I've been unlocking maps for years.

THE TRUTH: The supposed problem with anyone being able to unlock any map is that people will steal credit. The thing is however, the majority of the most commonly played maps on Battle.net are simple, unprotected maps that have a hundred different versions because anyone can edit them. Why are there are hundreds of different versions? Because the original map sucked huge freakin' balls. Most of the time, people only steal your map because it sucked in the first place, and they're going to make it better. On the offchance that someone is going to steal your crapty map and only change your name to theirs, it doesn't matter, your map sucked in the first place. A prime example of this is Mathrix(U)'s S.W.A.T. map. That map was really bad, and it had huge flaws. The original version never took hold, so it was easy for a stolen version to spread throughout the community.

Almost no maps are good. Almost no maps are worth stealing, and the ones that ARE good get distributed around Battle.net so fast that if some dipcrap switches his name into the map, it doesn't matter, the real version will still be more popular. Panzer_Kavalier's maps are perfect examples of this. Good maps can't be stolen, they're embedded in the community.

It's simple evolution, it's been going on for billions of years. Good designs persist, bad designs are modified (in this case by "map stealers"), or bad designs disappear all together. This is life, deal with it, do good and you will succeed, suck balls and you're going nowhere. No one has ever succeeded in stealing my maps and replacing them in the community, because the originals are too good and too widespread.

More likely that not, most people who actually work on maps don't even know about such programs, so the only people actually using this program are people with malicious intent. The people capable of following through with that malicious intent is even less. The fact is, those people could have unprotected your map before, so this changes nothing.

My only problem with this program, which is the same problem I have with Trigger Viewer, is that it makes it much less exciting to include secrets in your map if people can just use these tools to find the secrets.

Also there is a way to block this program from stealing your terrain. It will make larger though.

Most map stealers make good maps rigged, not fix them, i don't know from where did u came up with this theory..

I never seen that a map with "edited by" that is better than the original.. All i see are just some noob editions when they rigg units they like to use ingame to have all stats 9999, or they preplace tons of units for player 1 then they host the map, and think it's very cool. Sometimes, they just edit the terrain a bit, making it worse, and then place tons of Critters with their name of it.. etc...
