The tax is 15% of 4.99$. He had a cupon for 15% off. That means it costs 4.99$

Thats incorrect actualy. If you want to get all nerdy on it. $4.99 x 1.15 = $5.73, the 1.15 being for the tax. Then if you reduce it with the coupon. 5.73 x .85 = $4.87. So you'd be actualy saving 12 cents. Big Difference, but since your talking about the stupidest thing I've ever heard and its 9 in the morning, I'd say your the stupidest person I've heard so far, no offense.
The reason .85 is for the coupon reduction is because instead of multiplying it by .15 and then subtracting it from 4.99, you can just do .85.
The reason for 1.15 being the tax is the tax being .15 and instead of adding .15 to 4.99, you can just multiply it by 1.15.
If you were dividing in this scenerio, ur also incorrect, because you don't want to find pieces of a whole, you want to find percentages which you get by multiplication.
Even if you times .85 before 1.15, you get the same answer.
The stupidest thing I've heard is this kid whos a grade lower than me when we were doing egg drops, seeing how far we could drop if from into our catcher thing without the egg breaking, asked if he could vaporize the egg. Then the teacher just stared at him and said, if you find a way to vaporize an egg, I'll give you an A.
