Yah. The 'limited release' sounds like it would be better then Arsenal III anyway.

Im very annoyed at arsenal III. Im working on my itsy bitsy mod, and it crashes the file half the time D: .

What I'd like to say at this moment, is that the initial release will have limited capabilities. What I mean by this is that there will be no fancy stuff apart from the core DAT-editing fonctionalities - no MPQ import/export, no GRP preview, no HintBox, and no-a-few-other-things. These being optional fonctionalities, they will come later on. smile.gif

Those may be usefull functions (to some people) but its not really required

As long as it loads .dat files properly and doesnt have crashing/corruption problems its good enough for me biggrin.gif

Woo! Yeah, I'll be watching for this release too. I'll be good not to have to deal back and forth between Aresenal III and Arsenal Zero. Can't wait to see some of those unknowns be identified, too. Finding things like the Xel'Naga temple or the Corsair flingy.dat entries involved some detective work that I'd rather not have to bother myself with. happy.gif

No need for fancy stuff. Though it's kind of fun to add fancy tools and things to a pet project, I'll admit. So go for it! But give us the initial bare release. smile.gif

OK everyone, listen up - the day has finally come that I can say
it with a large amount of confidence:

"DatEdit is in the town and is gonna kick some butt!"

Aye, my friends, the first DE release candidate (RC1) was accomplished yesterday and those that have been chosen for testing (you know who you are) will receive a copy of it shortly.
Depending on what sort of and how many bugs will they find, the public release may, or may not be delayed by the time required to fix what is wrong. Stay tuned'n'cool - this is because I want to have a stable initial release for DatEdit, not because I'm 3vil and intend to try your patience.

The first bug we find would probably be a required file that doesn't come with the program tongue.gif

That's a good one....biggrin.gif
Nah - I already fixed this issue (I hope) in the test release (it's about 800KBs big when compared to the around 300KB version you may happen to possess...

Hay do u want information about Orders.dat
I think i know how it works (i've made a small modification of Orders.dat for my Sons of Korhal mod)

Do u want me to make some reseach?
(do u know for wut orders.dat is used for ? smile.gif ,I do)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BroodKiller on 2005-11-27 at 08:49:54
Well, several informations about orders.dat has been known already, but most of'em still remains unrevealed. Show me what you've got (PM preferably) - every bit of additional information will only serve for the better of the Starcraft modders...smile.gif

Send me a copy of that PM too. I've could double check them(BK knows how I check out how things work).

Ok just to clearify I am a NOOB in modding basicly:'( ,

I do know is that this program can moddify just about anything in starcraft gameplay, i dont know if that includes the tileset, but either way that is freaking awsome w00t.gif ,

Im also curious what are all the things this program can do? can it make it so a supply depo can lift off or make a zealot? *curious new comer*

also im wondering did you put an option for automatic mpq creation, the bliming mpq import export and all the single files is really anoying helpsmilie.gif ,

in all my basic question is did you make it so the average joe (being me) can use this new program? confused.gif

if you send me a copy (totaly up to you, no pressure) when its sprewsed up i can tell you if its to complicated for people who are trying to learn how to use it,

Thanks if you can biggrin.gif

Those things are most likely not going to be in DatEdit, but can be accomplished with other programs like TileEdit and MemGraft.

No, sorry - as its name suggests, DatEdit is a DAT file editor. DAT files stores many different data, but it DOES NOT edit animation scripts ("Lifting off"), as these are stored in the Iscript.bin file, nor does it edit the buttons (producing different units), what is stored in the EXE.

For the current moment I must say - NO, at its current stage DatEdit doesn't take care of those things for you. But, you may like to hear that such fonctionalities DO are planned to be implemented in a future update, so - stay tuned smile.gif

Well, I can't really tell if DatEdit is user-friendly or not. What I do can say, however, is that it is definitely MORE user-friendly than Arsenal Zero, which do is an advantage. I didn't overcomplicate anything in it. In fact - it is mainly just Arsenal 3 without its flaws, and Arse3 was a successfully used tool for a few generations of SC modders, so I guess there won't be much problem in grapsing what it is all about smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kookster on 2005-11-28 at 15:20:40
K gotchya, sounds good biggrin.gif ,
So just message some time when you do do the mpq thing cause all the single import export is a bit hard especially with my computer slow and ancient opening a folder takes atleast 4 seconds sad i know.

And another note does anyone in here know a good tutorial for memgraft??

i have the new version but dont know what alot of the things do in it, once again helpsmilie.gif .

and is the pat file you need for it in the mpq??

i get alot of this stuff its mostly finding things and what the numbers mean if it doesnt have a name i get lost. helpsmilie.gif

ADDITION:
I guess what im getting to is all you guys who know how to make programs, could you make something that includes everything in one program,

this is what i understand that datedit changes unit looks and icons, weapons spells anything related to units except buttons

memgraft add buttons and some other things

and tiledit edits tiles of course

see now what i think would be awsome but of course since i know kinda squat is if you guys could meld these programs together in one programs and since broodkiller you are already working on this program which much cudos to you for that, maby the other authors of those programs could make one grand one? eh? sound good? i dont know this is just my mind going off let me see what you guys say.

Actually DatEdit just changes .dat files doesnt change what they look like (RetroGRP does that) , doesnt change what icons look like (RetroGRP does that also) , doesnt change spells effects (hardcoded)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2005-11-28 at 16:17:21
He is right in a way though. You can change what GRP the unit uses in DatEdit, as well as edit the weapons that correspond to the spells.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kookster on 2005-11-28 at 17:36:15
thats what i was trying to say, i guess, but cant you change which weapons units use and what weapons do and what types and stuff units are like can they be repaired are they robotic are they yadda yadda

you can do all of that except possibly repairing toss/zerg units (I think it crashes)

Riki>Well, creating an all-in-one modding tool is an idea as old as the SC modding is. Of course it is possible, but noone has ever picked up such idea because of the complexity of this task. Also, such a tool would need to be very user-friendly but with limited GUI space it would just result - to my mind at least - in loading specific subprograms to do the things that are currently done with separate applications, which is basically the same.

just wondering though how did you make it??

I won't probably say anything revolutionary here, but it was hard work, more hard work and even more hard work. Forunately, I was in the SC modding community for long enough (5-6 years) to have enough passion to actually finish this program....wink.gif

To be honest, from the technical point of view creating such an application is very simple: I used only the standard C++/VCL libraries and components in DatEdit. As for the file specs - they're available in the web, so there is no problem in getting the data. I think that the whole 'thing' is about being 'pissed off' enough to say: "Damn, the available tools are no good, and noone seems to do anything about it...let's see if I can do it!" smile.gif

The first release will only be a .dat editor. Other releases may include other features.
