I personally don't mind ads. Most other Starcraft sites I visit have ads, and they don't bother me. They blend in with the site and some actually look pretty good. Examples:

http://teamliquid.net/
http://www.wgtour.com/index.php?datab=broodwar
http://sc.gosugamers.net/ Down the left side.
http://www.pgtour.net/ FighterForum thing is an ad, but it looks cool.

As long as it looks good. wink.gif

Oh, and just a minute ago I was reading a thread and barely noticed the ad. Probably thought it was a signature or something.

Yeah, you guys are overreacting. It's not like he "sold out", he has a site to pay for.

I would put the ads underneath the Affiliates or the shoutbox, as long as it's underneath the reply buttons.

Personally, I think the ads are fine. This site is a tool (feedback), and the ads don't hinder your ability to use it as one. Though there is certain novelty, to an adless site, this isn't going to hurt SEN.

True...

And I could always stick them in the DLDB, tutorials, shoutbox, etc... tongue.gif

Seeing as the DLDB is the most visited place, the ads should be there rather than in the forums.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by M_s4 on 2006-04-02 at 21:46:31
OMFG!!!!! Oh noes!! We have to take 1/4 of a second to scroll down something that is like 1/3 of a post!!! I hate SEN now! I don't care that it's been free for over 2 years for me now and that I learned all this map making stuff, got ScmDraft, X-tra and over fifteen forums with active members without paying a cent! I'm gonna quit now!

Get over it.

Even if there were still 5 popups everytime I clicked a page, I seriously wouldn't mind.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2006-04-02 at 21:48:28
I like the idea of putting them in the DLDB. Alot of people come on this site just for the maps.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2006-04-02 at 21:55:50
What? You are so against ads but sticking them in the DLDB also wouldn't bother you?

You're seriously having me consider it now since you are so oppose to it, yet want it done smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Voyager7456(MM) on 2006-04-02 at 21:57:56
I think having them in the DLDB rather than the forums would be a better idea. The DLDB is more visited, yet each individual would probably not download as many maps as they do view threads, so they'd be less bothered by them.

A win-win situation?

Wilhelm did anyone ever tell you that your an idiot? If not I’ll take the time too do so now.

Uhh Your an idiot.

I’m not going to waist a bunch of time arguing this.

Mods are already doing a service to the staredit.net and your not and you’re suggesting they do more just because they are already helping or because they might have money.

PS. Isolated, you need to work on your wording for announcments. You never even really stated why you put up the ad. Just that you don't like them and that you were testing it.
I don't know your plans but personally I would first try the ads in the less obscure places, small and out of the way. Suggest that if people want to help keep the site running then they click the ad every once in a while. If that doesn't yeild enouth results then put them at the top or wherever they are now. (I can't see them cause i donated like 2 years ago lol)

I wonder if who would get in trouble if I reported the above post. I (at the time) thought a dedicated server only costs around a hundred bucks a month (which isn't horrible, most people would be able to pay for it). Since everyone is busy enjoying attacking my question that was made in sincere curiosity, I guess I'll just give up entirely on this. I don't care anymore.

If 'anybody' can pay for it, how about you start donating $100 per month? Why not?

If the ads are so crucial to SEN, then keep them. However, I don't understand something about this: most of the moderators and other staff are old enough to work, correct? Are you guys paying for SEN's upkeep too?

Believe it or not, some of us have donated.

Thank god somebody has the sense to speak the truth.

Honestly, you people are sickening. OH NOES!!! you have to scroll for an extra 0.5 seconds when reading a topic. If it really ruins your existence, fork over the $10 to get rid of the ads. It isn't exactly a huge sum of money.

If you can't possibly face doing anything to help SEN, just leave. We'll pay less for the server without you.

MY IDEAS
Yes, DLDB IS a good place for ads.
If you cant put it there put them ads below the thread not below every 1st post.
I'll try to fake my age on PayPal and find some way to earn money for SEN.

This is what i can say about those complainers:
If you can live with those ads in television then why can't you live with them on SEN?
It's just ads, not aids.

Really, everyone should pay attention to the above post, and stop just flaming Wilhelm.

Wilhelm - How about getting ADBLOCK!!!! if you hate the ads so much.

Hey... no blocking SEN ads ;o ;o ;o

Wihelm, please state your question again and I'll anwser it.

Reason for putting ads on the page? I'm considering a dedicated host for SEN (and by no means would I be able to afford it right now - $100 isn't much relatively, but when you have a child, student loans, etc, it adds up quickly). Yoshi/Mike Lat still owes SEN $200 in donations as well (what he had from SEN when he left), so getting SEN a dedicated server should be very possible in the near future.

Dedicated host hopefully means more and faster AJAX requests... No longer need to worry about people uploading 5 mb theme music that people download but don't actually put in their maps... it hopefully mean SEN can expand expotentionally without worrying about bandwidth (Arcades, etc).

Remember when I leeched out the screenshots out of the DLDB because they were generating double hits due to poor coding? And how I killed lots of crap all around? SEN used 90 gigs of bandwidth so far this month... Our real limit is 100 gigs (our awesome host upped it to 200, but I'd feel guilty about using that extra 100 without paying for it). The pay cycle is the 18th of each month. Figure it out.

What are you talking about? A green ad under each 1st post in a page makes the site look professional? Thats weird...

They're not that bad. They're only about an inch tall and easily ignorable. Just to help sen I will click the ads every now and then.

I think the DLDB is a good place to put them. I can't donate to SeN ecause I'm too young sad.gif but I put up with worse ads than these especialy on geocities.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2006-04-03 at 14:00:49
It's true what Ian has said, most of us are under age, so no, not everyone can help pay for the site, I'd have to say that almost nobody can pay for it.

The Staff can also barely pay for the site. Only IP, Moose and maybe Will are over 18, but we'll just put Will out of the picture because he's from UK and it'll be a pain to send money from there.

And if we did pay for the site, we'd run out of money fairly fast. I have about $250 cash right now, that which I periodically use to buy my own stuff and use for gasoline. That'll be extra money over the $60 per month I need to pay, no questions asked.

I may be 17 and 18 is right around the corner, but so is College, more Track & Field and 2 two hour drives each week. It doesn't get easier, being 18 means that you have even less economical freedoms.

So in the end, even if the money for the ad's doesn't end up anywhere, it'll be better even if we just had that money on reserve.

Maybe a dedicated server would make things good, but maybe it'll be the same, what we do know is that nobody would have extra holes in their pocket.
