Staredit Network -> Games -> The Best FPS of All Time

What do you think is the most influential first person shooter of all time? I would have to say Dark Forces for the vast realm of height it introduced. It was also a solid shooter and I believe one of the first PC Star Wars games, which of course are wildly popular with (now both console and PC) the Jedi Knight, Knights of the Old Republic, and Rogue Squadron series, some of the flagships of the Lucasarts gaming business. Plus that MSDos game was pure coolness to play. How much more fun could you get than blasting stormtroopers?

Golden Eye for the N64, the first "violent" game for the 64 and it had a four way multiplayer!!! When it came out it had stunning graphics and it's considered the best multiplayer game.

[center]Yeah, GoldenEye is the most influential of them all. And after that game came Perfect Dark, which pretty much started all the FPS with the many options you can have in them (i.e. Weapon select, game modes, difficulty levels). I still end up playing some GoldenEye with my friends if I ever get sick of X-Box.

I can even remember when GoldenEye came out. I think it was in October of like 1997, and my older brother was the first one in my town to buy it. I felt pretty special to be the brother of the first GoldenEye buyer in our town. I was like 8 though...

golden eye, most definitely. those were the days. golden eye and perfect dark both were revolutionary in thier own way, and influenced how most of todays games were made and produced.

Well supposivly Xbox 2 is making another Perfect Dark.

Influentional. Well I have to give Halo it's marks for bringing veichles into FPSs, goldeneye having the best multiplayer of it's time, Doom being the first FPS of all time. But I think the one that impacted us the most is, COUNTER STRIKE. It's nothing speical but it's a revolutionary game that people still play 3-5 years after it's out. Also Half Life is a good one, it brought puzzle solving to FPSs
Wow inspiring, the only one I can't play right now is Halo, because me no have xbox.

Doom for being the scariest piece of censored.gif I ever played.

Half Life for making the FPS games what they are... most of the GUI and standards now for FPSes came from this game.

And lastly, Halo for actually being the friggin best FPS ever. Having ALL the weapons with melee attacks (you cant do that with other games), gernades, vechs, funass multiplayer, splitscreen & campaign, and having a system where health points is no longer existant... instead having sheilds that recharge (if you ever played and FPSes online, dont you hate it when you kill one guy, you run around for a heath pack but some guy comes out thinking he pwns you and takes advantage of your low HP).

Golden eye...those were the days. I remember when I really wanted a Nintendo64 just for golden eye. (Now I want X-box for halo tongue.gif)

Yes, I agree is the most influencial. I think it is the one that started all those FPS games. Plus all the violance...it made James Bond what it is like to be. (Besides the part of running faster than a machine gun. Helicopter bullets at your healf and just having perfect aiming like in the movie wink.gif)

Hmm... You read my mind.

Doom and Wolfenstein 3D were the most influential FPS because they were the first tongue.gif

I would have to say Half-Life, and the mods that were born from it. Console shooters dont count happy.gif .

Metroid Prime (and Echoes). Everyone thought it'd screw the serie over, since it always made a hit with classic 2D side-scroll Metroid games. It ended up almost getting by Super Metroid's foot, which is something not a lot of games can do.

It was also innovative with all the different upgrades you could get, unlike most other FPS where you have to get as many weapons as you can and destroy anything around with massive future weapons tongue.gif

Metroid > Halo happy.gif

Metroid is only for gamecube, you have to be insanely retarded to get one of those wink.gif

Halo > Metroid...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-02-08 at 11:59:44
That was the dumbest reason ever tongue.gif.

Halo is also only for XBox. And you have to pay much more money to play online (which is the only reason Halo is soooo fu***** popular). Even though Prime doesn't have that posibility, Echoes has a neat 4-players mode anyway.

Heretic is the most influential FPS ever because it was the first (It came before Doom and had similar graphics).

Oh how could I forget about Metroid!
Metroid and Half Life brought to the table: One level games, I didn't know what to call them, but all otehr FPSs are like:
Level 1: Casta Land
Level 2: Some place far away from Casta Land

Metroid and Half Life had one world throughout the entire game, which is awesome, although I might say Metroid made it more creative, finding weapon mods and visions as you go along, they're both different games so you can't really say which one is better.

Guess I'm joining insanely retarded club. Anyway:

- Wolfenstein (first FPS I think)
- Doom (not the first FPS, but the game that made it popular)
- Goldeneye (perfected FPS on consoles)
- Half-Life (set the benchmarks on the PC)

Could anyone actually figure every GoldenEye controls anyway? There's like 8 different ways to play the game. Everyone just end up putting Honey since it just gets too screwy xD

Unreal3 and Unreal Tournament 2006

Dark Forces(same reasons as above)
Doom(also same reasons)
Jedi Knight(introduced the concept of Force Powers to an FPS, which was an excellent decision, due to the sheer number of sales LucasArts has made over the series)

You're missing about 200 FPSs between Quake and Doom 3

Hmm, I thought that Marathon (made by Bungie, somewhat ironically) was the first or second FPS? It definitely came out in the same year as Wolf 3D.

The games came out Wolf3d ('92), Doom ('93), Heretic ('94), Marathon ('94).

Heretic was made from a modified Doom engine. And Wolf3d and Doom had different engines, even though they were made by iD Software.
