Staredit Network -> SCMDraft -> Why do you like/dislike scmdraft?

It seems, mostly with this community, that their preference with map making tools is pretty much clear. Majority goes for starforge. This isn't a scmdraft vs starforge war, personally, I use both editors with their advantages and disadvantages.

Coming with the next version, it will have a better terrian indexing, terrian brushes, better trigger editor, zoom, fog of war, more bugs fixed (there are virtually none anyway), and much more. Both Heimdal and SI have done fantastic jobs with their editors.

My question to all of you, is why do you prefer one over the other? And, when SI releases some of these new features, will your preference and usage of either editor remain the same?

The only thing I don't like about starforge is that you cannot move triggers up and down, Isometric terrain is no good. I like the triggering and all.

SCMdraft, I like how it has not a lot of bugs. I like the animations of the placed units tongue.gif.
Only think I don't like is the triggering does not have auto-complete and it is a bit buggy. You can't like Sf, changed the width and high by custom. I is already either square or rectagle or even bigger ones.

If SCM is done with the newer version... I think it will be better than SF. Right now it has to be Starforge in my opinon which is better.

Well, reason I go with StarForge is that back in summer of 2003 I was in Custom Maps with Heimdal when StarForge was being made. So I grew to like it. I guess I never really gave SCMDraft much of a chance. Just so much more use to StarForge than SCMDraft.

Perhaps this analogy will better explain my views tongue.gif

e.g., Currently I prefer Starforge but the day will come (and quite soon I expect) when SCMD will surpass Starforge.

SCMDraft. Sure, SF has it's nice things. But if there's one thing I don't like is lack of efficiency. SF has had a long head start, and apparantly, there haven't been many changes from what I've seen as to fixing bugs. At least none that I'm aware of. I feel more assured with SCMDraft. Simply because it's neater, cleaner, and much more reliable. Even though uncomplete, I think people will soon find SCMD2 the next best editor we've see since SCXE.

I would hardly call SF perfect, it still has many bugs to deal with at the moment. SCMD is missing features over SF but it is more stable.

No ones perfect tongue.gif

Notice the nose cone of SF falls twenty or so pixels short of the yellow line tongue.gif

I love SCMDraft 2. Mainly because it can do perfect ISOM, I can view hp/shields/energy by holding shift. I can work with triggers far faster and easier than Starforge. The sound editor. The auto-repair features for things like locations. The save image so I can save an image the actual size of the map and not a compression like scm/scx -> jpeg. And a few other little features.

You can use the trigger beta version better than the Starforge one?

I didn't even know you could use scmdraft for triggs. Maybe I'm to lazy to try?
I never used starforge because the last version i used turn all of my terrain into square/rectangle, and i think Isom is essential for rpgs, realistic terrain etc.

SCMD is awesome, great terrain features, sprites, etc. Only thing i hate is apparently it doesn't allow u to interact with scxe for unknown reasons.(or unknown by me) I think SCXE would be 10x better if it didn't corrupt files so you couldn't save in SCXE. SCXE is classic and i love to use it because it's classic mode allows me to make sure I don't stack and Put Buildings on cliffs or water edges. Makes it Look somewhat Cleaner and Uncluttered. But besides that I very Much Like SCMDRaft more.

Yeah, I like the way starforge has them setup, but with SCMDraft 2 I dont have to go back click > modify or double click to view another trigger. I can just scroll.

Cause more of SF was my idea, Cause I know the ins and Outs of it better, And because I like the layout alot better.

Did SI ever include the toolbar. Or put the usefull stuff on it, I remember sugesting to add more stuff to it and he was like "thats funny such and such says take it out compleatly"

That and i don't like the pallets. There generally large and clutter the screen. Heimdal made very good use of the side panel in Starforge.

I'd like to see the sidepanel thing in scmdraft :/
THAT IS SOMETHING I HATE IN SCMDRAFT sad.gif

Starforge has that cool loading screen tongue.gif j/p .. but it does..
I rarely use scmdraft mostly because I dont have it in my starcraft menu like I do starforge. Also there was this one thing that really annoyed me with scmdraft its like the doors arent compatible with starforge and when I open the map with sf the doors are weird then when i save and open with scmdraft the doors are permanently open and I can't delete them.

can you send me a before and after map with the doors? I'll look into it, and see if its my fault or SF's

Hrm, as far as SCMD2 vs other editors, SCMD2 is the best in organization, straightforwardness, terrain editing ability and flexibility (it does ISOM correctly, SF is useless for terrain compared to SCMD2, it allows for custom sized rect brushes now as well as multi-size isom brushes). SCMD2 is the worst in triggers. The trigger system, for one, hardly works, and for two, is not nearly as fast or user friendly as SF. Luckily, however, he made it a plugin system, so that people like >me< can make their own trigger system and do it as flashy as is humanly possible, and make it available to the public for alternative use.

I agree with bolt, SCMD2 has lots of unnecessary clutter in the various palettes in the UI. I came up with a really awesome solution to that, but it really only works for the mac port (which has aqua+quartz with lots of flashy fast transparancy and such in the UI).

Personally i'd want SI to go through those menu options and place some of them into a single entry for the sake of moving through them all, and for appearance, set them to a private form, or even a MDI.

both editors are really good. SCMD is less buggy then SF but SF has a nice trigger system and more fantastic features so i personally would go for SF.

SF trigger system is a censored.gif to write in quickly, it combines the two elements from a Text-Pure and GUI-Pure which makes it annoyed, personally i'd just have the text-language and write in the little extra;

I like Starforge better because I can go faster in making trigger's, Since I know all the combinations...I can just type it smile.gif ,Instead of using draft....Where you gotta go through clicking for ever...And if your making a bound that gets really annoying...And when you can use starforge to do the first 3 combinations "Create, Wait , Kill"...You can just copy them below it and just change the location or unit.

(and it seems people who hate macs, usually never tried one. ((evidence)) dry.gif

Or perhaps next time you buy a computer, you should realize that if you want to be in the currently mainstream world, you buy what over 90% of other people buy. tongue.gif
