Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> WOuld you like to see a hard drive blow up?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SA_Max71 on 2005-02-11 at 02:07:08
I haven't seen a hard drive blow up, but I have heard it is real cool to watch. A friend is going to make a video of this happening. I might be able to convice him to let me do it. If so, then I can convince him to post it online somewhere. Then, I can post the link for it on SEN somewhere (most likely in my sig).

The reason I want to do this, is because my hard drive is worthless to me now. It has short-circuited on me.

Edit: I hear that in order to blow it up all yet to do is turn the power on, and then disconnect its power supply without turn off the computer first.

Little risky right? You could get hurt yourself in the process of unpluing it, as you got to do it fast otherwise youl blow your hand off.

Why not just hook it up to a 240V outlet, and watch what happens? That should have the same effect...

your hard drive should be fine... I plan on blowing up mine by pulling the plug on it - while the rest of my computer is turned on.

Honestly I don't see how unpluging your hard drive directly would be any different from unpluging your entire computer. All that is happening is you're cutting of the power supply in both situations.

Why would you destroy such a fine piece of engineering.

Open it.
Look at it.
Understand it.

Apparently, it does matter how you shut down your hard drive.

fine piece of engineering? crazy.gif It's a short-circuited on me so it's useless -- whenever there is power running to it, I can see smoke coming from it and I can see the chip actually being fried.

Why bother, when I can do that by looking at the 1,000+ pictures on google's picture search?

A friend was fixing a computer when he unplugged a hard drive, while the rest of the computer had power.

Don't blow up the sucker! Okay, what you do is remove the top and bottom panel and hook it up to a power supply. As it spins, try to tilt it really fast and stuff! It's really fun while it's trying to spin back horizontally!

Well, it worked for me with those REALLY old 1 GB drive that I cracked open and had fun. Took out the magnet thingy (and couldn't get them back on) and broke off all the heads and stuff. Like I said, fun!

That was two or three years ago though. Ah...the good old days...

You still don't understand how it works.
If you could understand how it actually works, I don't mean by that it spins really fast and reads code but how it reads it, delievrs it to the CPU and converts it to electrical signals.

Now you will know how something so common in every day life is such a marvelous piece of engineering which is quite hard to understand to it's fullest.

Why do you blame that it's the Hard Drive's fault it dis functioned on you? Maybe it was your countless hours on the PC that messed it up or you might've been using the PC during a thunderstorm and light went out causing a short circuit.

I shut down my computer before going to bed for the night. When I got up the next morning, I noticed a spider had decided that my computer was a great place to make its home. Although I didn't see the spider when I turned on the computer, I almost immediately noticed that something was being fried. My power button didn't work, so I had to unplug my computer's power cord from the computer. I then took a look at the parts to see what was wrong with it and what part had messed up. THe moment I took out my hard drive, I found out where the spider was - it had decided to hide in my hard drive.

So, to sum things up =
1. spider hide in my hard drive. it was touching one of the metal pieces that had electricty going through it.
2. I turned it on, and spider becomes fired.
3. Hard drive short circuits.
4. I get angry at spider and want to torture it, but it is already dead. Instead, I get to have fun and blow up my hard drive (I haven't done that yet).

I would rather blow it up. If it goes to sleep while the computer is on, it takes a full 15 minutes before I can use it again (unless I reboot the computer >.< )
