How do you protect 1.10 maps?

Just downloaded some map protection thing and I followed these steps:

QUOTE
Instructions
-----------------

SETUP
1) Run Staredit.exe
2) Simply put 2 start locations, then save the empty map as any name (use the same extension as your original map)
3) Under Scenario menu, choose sound. import any sound you would like to be in your scenario into the empty map. If you DO NOT have any sound in your map, then skip just this step.
4) Save and close Staredit

EXPORT
5) Uncompress MPQview.zip (if not already)
6) Open the MPQ viewer  (Make sure STORM.DLL is placed in that directory)
7) Click Open Data File, and select 'sc_data.txt'
8) Click Open Archives, and select the SCM/SCX you want to protect.
9) In the list, select 'staredit\scenario.chk' and Click Save.
10) Close the MPQ Viewer

PROTECT
11) With this SCM Protector, Choose Browse and pick the file 'scenario.chk'
12) Hit Protect

IMPORT
13) Move 'StarDat.mpq' from the starcraft folder to the SCM protector folder.(you may copy the file, but do know that the files are huge)
14) Run Import.exe, and open up your saved map (the one you're just created)
15) Under Scenario menu, choose sound. Import 'scenario.chk'
16) WITHOUT saving, close Import.exe
17) Move 'StarDat.mpq' back to the Starcraft folder

This new map is now the protected copy of your map, try it out!

And it didn't work, might it be because the program is old, is there new ones which work better?

Thats like the 2nd most complicated way of protecting. Just post the GUEdit way.

My whole point is HOW THE HELL DO I PROTECT MY MAPS ?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-01-21 at 08:22:09
GUedit is the worst possible way. Its vunerable to the map unprotector. (so is SCMtoolkit).

Does SCMToolkit run and open maps?

(unless you want to spend 10 minutes locking every map, I dont think anyone will give a censored.gif , Yoshi ... besides, the number of people who unprotect maps for personal gain is small)

People who want to map steal and edit big maps is big. I've seen it happen to my own maps. They only problem is, its hard to make a map "catch on" on bnet.

It's hard to make a map "catch on" here as well.

Btw, nobody still has told me how to protect a map, I mean I know Chu knows how to because his got protected maps for download here... can you please explain ?

FireFly, sorry, I thought you were using SCMToolkit and were having problems with it. Let me help you out...

Download these two files:

http://www.staredit.net/files/dl/se/gueditrf.exe
and
http://www.staredit.net/files/dl/se/guedit.zip

Install the first one, it's the java files required to run the program. Then you will unzip the zip file ANYWHERE you want. It doesn't matter because it will work anywhere.

After you have both the .exe installed, and the .zip unziped and placed where you want it, run the .JAR file in the zip. (GUEdit.jar)

*If it opens up in WinZip or something you will have to go under the properties of the file, and it will have a spot where it says "Opens with:". Change the program to the javaw.exe program found in program files\javasoft\jre\bin\javaw.exe (it may be different for you, just go look for it if it's not where I said, if you installed the .exe then it must be somewhere).*

*If it doesn't open up at all, restart your computer and try again. If that doesnt help then reinstall the .exe and repeat the steps above*

Now, it should bring up a box on the upper left hand side of your screen. It will give you 2 initial options: Load... or Quit.

*Stop right here!* It is important that you make a copy of your map so you don't save your only copy. This sounds obvious to me, but I know people who have locked the only copies of their map. There are two ways to unlock them once you have them locked but one requires a lot of editing and the other requires a very hard to find program. So either way, it's very hard to unlock maps.

Now click on Load, then find the map that you want to lock and load it in. The rest of the buttons should be available once the map is loaded. You can take a look at all the nice features in the program like changing player colors, terrain type, editing terrain, etc.

To lock the map all you need to do is click Protect and enter your name and email if you want, then click Full Protect. After that a popup should appear saying that protect was successful. You then want to save the map, since the program can't save over files, you'll have to create a new mapname including adding .scm or .scx at the end. Save and quit and open your map in staredit to test that it was locked and then in starcraft to make sure it works.

And that's just one way to lock maps. I could give 2 or 3 more tutorials on how to do it with other programs or manually but I'm not. GUEdit is all you need.

I'd like to point out trying this with GUEdit leads to a "cannot overwrite original" error. So uh, not really necessary. yawn.gif

I was thinking of SCMToolkit when I wrote that specific part, but yeah I did also mention that you cannot save over your map with GUEdit.
