About 5 or 6 years ago when I was first getting into StarCraft mapmaking I seem to recall something very odd. Now, bear with me because my memory is faulty, and this may not actually have happened.
I remember trying to open a map, and instead of crashing my StarEdit like some other maps had, this map asked me for a password to open it. I seem to recall guessing and then it closing and not opening again, or maybe I just didn't try to open it again. Does anyone recall such a program that existed so long ago, or a recent program that can do the same thing reliably? (Yes, I know about SF v2.2.)
I'm pretty sure you are talking about SCMToolkit. It allowed you to 'temporarily' protect a map that crashed StarEdit/SCXE (but not StarForge

) and you had to enter a password to 'unprotect' it. If that's not it, then I dunno

Was SCMToolkit around a long time ago? Because this happened when I was quite literally 10 or 11. Im nearing license age now. (16.5 wooo 20 days!!!!)
Yeah SCMToolkit came out after GUEdit, so everyone was using that to Temporarilly Protect maps by using passwords.
This has nothing to do with maps.
Topic moved in my own little moderator world.
http://www.shadowflare.com I think has SCMToolkit...but it's VERY obsolete.
Now this is odd-- I tried to open a map of this kind with regular StarEdit. would this tool still apply?
No, actually it wouldn't. If you open a map with StarEdit after it has been protected by temporary protection in SCMToolkit, it'll just crash StarEdit/SCXE (again, but not StarForge

)
SCM Toolkit is totally outdated now. It has nothing to offer that SCMDraft and SF can't do. And it can be unprotected by SCU...

I don't see your problem, download PROEdit from the DLDB.
If you want to password maps, then use StarForge. Go into options and put in a unique name, password, and e-mail. Now you have to remember these if you ever uninstall StarForge. What you do is you open your map and click save as, and in the window click StarForge Authorized. This protects the map from opening in any other editor, and it will still open in StarForge. But ONLY when the name, password, and e-mail are EXACTLY the same as when you saved it. Tada!
Turin if you read the thread I am not asking how to protect maps so that they can be opened using a password. I'm asking how when using regular StarEdit on my old computer it was possible that I opened a map that asked for a password, and I don't have a clue how.
So it would appear. My memory must be getting faulty in my old age of 16.
