I turn mines off everyday. How can that be a bad thing? The worst is having it turned on and have it on the Internet...when you are not using it. More risk of hackers, virus etc entering you computer.

I always leave my computer on during weekdays, and give it a nice little cool down every weekend. You guys should notice computer slowing down when its been left on for too long.

I hear its not good for your computer to turn the power on and off frequently. Has something to do with putting stress on the circuits or something. I'm no expert, though.

100 Points to Tuxedo-Templar. IF you have proper cooling in your computer then it is actually better to leave the computer ON at all times. However if your computer tends to overheat then it is better to turn it off periodically and wait a few hours before using it again.

I personally leave my computer on at all times. I have never had a problem with this. Matter of fact ... the computer im using right now has been on, non stop, for over 3 months now.

Turning on a computer is basically the same as turning on a car. When you start it, hundreds of circuts start working at once. It's much better to keep your computer turned on, but never let it get hot. Keep it cool at all times, or turn it off when it starts getting hot.

Computers can be left on for a long time.

The only thing that'll hurt you would be to pay for the electricity to keep ur computer up and running.

Standby is my shutdown. I have decent firewalls (My dad's a computer security analist so he knows what is good and whatnot).

I rarely shutdown.

Well... if you leave your computer on and are constantly running programs taking up a lot of heavy memory (and your computer doesn't HAVE quality memory), then yea you'll run into memory problems - which can EASILY be fixed by restarting your comp.

Like... recharging a battery.

Uhh... freezing isnt very good... -_-

Norton Is pretty good. I cant really ask him seeings how I'm not allowed on the computer, but if I get the chance, I'll bring it up.

I use AVG Free Edition. Free thingy [My old firewall, TrendMicro (Good firewall) ran out of its trial]

My mom has me shutdown when I go to sleep.
The reason that she gave me was that she doesn't trust Winblows.

Microsoft antispyware, google i suppose. Thats the stuff we use at the moment, but trend Micro has it built in (Or it comes with it)

I don't shut mine down unless it's so slow it's intolerable. I just need a bit more ram. Otherwise it should have no side-effects, other than your electricity bill going up...

I shutdown my computer in "HIBERNATION" as in turns off, if you have your files not exited, and you hibernated it, once you turn it on, it's still there also if you unplug your computer during hibernation, it's still there and never makes your computer slooow smile.gif

I shut my computer down when I sleep. Not because I have to or I think it'll catch fire, more that my fan is fricking loud so I cant sleep with it on.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Warlord on 2005-03-02 at 23:49:55
Yea, I can't sleep either when my fan is on... unless I just post on useless posts on cool websites all night thumbup.gif What's the difference between standby/hibernation and shutdown??? Other than you can start the former up by moving the mouse... My computer doesn't standby well.... It takes about 30 minutes to boot back up from standby... Damn comp lol
