Report, edit, etc...Posted by KillaAssassin on 2005-03-02 at 16:45:25
Hi, my names KillaAssassin, you may call me Killa for short. I am making a game for me and my friends to play, but I want it to go public one day.

I made the game 6 players, 1 NPC, and 1 computer the players fight. It is a RPG with 4 spells pre hero, and 8 heros to pick from. I planned for the players to do 3 quests, but I thought of other cool quests I could add, then I thought about other things I could add like buying units for the players to use aside from their heros. Thing is, I made the map size 128x128 because at the start, my plans were to make a small rpg for some friends and I to play.

So what I need to know is if there are any programs that can change the map size without having me redo everything all over again?

Thanks for any help, and I am sorry if this has been asked before...

You can use Starforge to resize your map but it can be risky...you might lose everything. That happened ot my old map.

You can use the program SCMToolkit to resize maps. Just be sure to save a backup, stick with 64/96/128/192/256, and remember that the ANYWHERE location may not work ANYWHERE (you can solve this by making a new location covering everywhere).

Took abit to get SCMTool working, I installed the needed files but I forgot 1 of them. Anyway it worked, thanks to both of you, I didn't use starforge because it looks really confusing to me.

Oh, the map is now all dark in the editor, if I wanted, could I keep some of the dark there? Like would the map having some of that dark spots do anything bad like crash or anything?

Thanks again!

EDIT: I just saw something now, the tiles are sqaure (spelling..?) now, is there anyway to change that back to normal? I really dislike making maps like that because I like making the land look like a real place with hills and things like that.

I'm not sure what SCMToolkit uses for the null (dark) terrain but If you can open it in game then It's 100% OK to leave it in there.

Ok thanks, oh if you didn't get a chance to see my edit, could you see if you can help me with this? (If you don't mind that is)

I prefer to use SCMDraft2 to change the size of the map.

SCMDraft2 is lagging on my computer, but it doesn't do the tile thing I hate, so I might use it for the resize part... but I don't even see the resize option... I will keep looking though.

If there is a way to change the options on SCMTool to not do the tile thing, I would rather use that, is there?

Thank for the help guys!

To change to the other kind of terrain you are talking about, it is called "Isometric" terrain. So just change it to be isometric. Don't use starforge for isometric terrain though. It is not good.

In SCMD2 open the map, goto Scenario -> Map description. Then there you will see some information about the map including width and height. Change those numbers then click on apply to change the size of the map.

It worked...ish, the edges between the old map and the new extented parts of the map become "Isometric" (thanks for the word) when clicked on and then the rest of the terrain placed becomes "Isometric" also. I will do what I can to go around that but I thought you all would like to know if you didn't.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

But if you resize it, technicaly they stay in the corner or in the middle right?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2005-03-04 at 15:56:11
If you resize it, you choose where the already made portion of the map goes.

If you use StarForge I think the normal terrain brushes work. Just try StarForge out, it is a very good editor once you get to know it. And the resize thing in StarForge doesnt quite work, because he didnt really work on it.

Guess I have the same problem. I need to resize my map. I tried SCMD2 and the ToolKit, but the result is the same - the editor crashes whenever I try to open the file. blink.gif Maybe there is an other way?

next time, before you resize a map you may want to back it up, save it with a few different names

Can you describe what you're doing to resize it? What is the original size? What are you resizing it to? And what are the x/y cordinates you are placing it at?

I made a back up file tongue.gif .

The map is 128x128 and the numbers i put in were 196x196. I didn't change the cordinates x/y(default 0).

EDIT: Jeez...I wrote that number in the SCMD and Toolkit, didn't work cause 196 is not a valid number smile.gif. Changed it to 192 and everything is fine.

If you don't relocate the map (Like in Chu's last post) then you can do some freaky stuff.
Like place units on invalid terrain.

Or maybe addons can be placed on null? I didn't think so tongue.gif.
