Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> AIDS vs. Tsunami
Report, edit, etc...Posted by assassin_498 on 2005-03-04 at 20:27:59
This is one topic that our class brought up numerous times before, and now I ask you one question:

Why do you think people help the tsunami victims but not the AIDS victims?

One of my friends think that it's because we are all racists, and we don't care about the AIDS victims because they're black.

Some people, including me, think that we just don't care because it's not our problem and we just get on with life.

But why? Why the tsunami victims and not the AIDS victims? The tsunami killed a lot of people but I think that AIDS will eventually kill a lot more people than the tsunami did.

Share your thoughts.

I think one of the reasons may be that the tsunami caused alot more visible damage, (not saying that AIDS doesn't cause damage), but people see a town flattened by a tidal wave, and it's alot more memorable than seeing an AIDS victim.

Some people see commercials asking for donations for AIDS and they think, 'Oh, thats a good cause, I'll donate later', and then forget, but a tsunami is all over the news, radio, in the newspapers, it's near-impossible to forget.

People are simply disgusted with the picture of std's, I still can remember health class's pictures of herpes and things. Homeless children crying in the street paints a more veiwable picture, and this image is often one that people give money to help.

The tsunami victims were affected harshly because it wiped out cities homes families and other things aswell. Aids is still get money just not alot like the tsunami victims. And they have commercials that AIDS r bad and thats why you don't do it at a young age.

The tsunami killed people in a short period of time. AIDS is more of a long term disease, so people in Africa could be infected right now. My prediction is: it will eventually spread all over the country if we don't do anything about it. It will become a worldwide disease in no time, and it'll become more serious than SARS! Sure, there are some commercials about it, but some people ignore commercials. They need topics about this on the media, as of what Voyager7456 said.

I agree with all of you. I do think that the tsunami did create a more visible picture. Also, the tsunami is easier to treat: you just help the people who had their homes wiped out. Against AIDS it takes a while to treat it and if you think that it is gone, sometimes it will come back and then people will get ticked off and not donate any more.

I read that there is a gene that they have found that prevents you from getting AIDS, something that changes the bonding sites in cell membranes, from normal people. I wonder if there is any fact behind this? (I know this is slightly off topic, but I want to know if there are people out there who can't get AIDS)

tsunami hit us.. we felt sorry...
The AIDS was forever and is a "incurable" but now "somehow" curable desiese. IT was here forever. I also believe its got something to do with:

1. Media
2. Place it happened
3. Our feelings.

The AIDS has been going on for a long time. You say AIDS and you think like: they did something to get it huh? They were doing something bad.... (no impressions) (no hard feelings)
It happened on the Pacific Ocean where there is a State there in the middle of it.

However i have NO IDEA why we gave lets see.... 300 BILLION DOLLARS (exagerated) but close. (maybe 100 billion or even 300 billion off...)

Why would I donate to AIDS victims in Africa when there are plenty enough here in the states. Nonetheless AIDS I think is more deserving of the money. I heard on the radio a few weeks ago that a new type of HIV was discovered that cannot be slowed down by drugs and turns into AIDS super fast.

Well now people are kind of getting confused about what AIDS is. It is caused by HIV. HIV is a virus that kills your white blood cells. It inserts its DNA (dybonucleic acid (GO ME I REMEBERED!)) into your white blood cells. Then the white blood cell makes a lot of HIV viruses. When there are a lot the viruses it makes the cell pop open and sets all the viruses free. Then these viruses do it again until you have no more white blood cells left. Then you have AIDS. When you are like this if you catch any kind of flu or cold nothing will stand against it and it will have a high chance of killing you. One way that a gene can treat it is if white blood cells get a certian kind of enzyme. It cuts the DNA when it sees a certian sequence. If it cuts the virus's DNA then that cell will not produce any more HIV viruses.

Actually I read somewhere in these forums a while back (the thread-starter posted a link to the news site) that something of a vaccine was underway. It wasn't a vaccine persay, but it damn near stopped the T-Virus. Hell, it did stop the T-Virus (it just didn't kill it off). After something like 10 years, the test subjects (human males) had something like 10-15% T-Virus activity of the original T-Virus activity level. That means that 10 years down the road, there's only a fraction of the disease left, and you can hardly say that it is really harming those folks anymore.

However callous this might sound, I believe we should educate the African populace first before we introduce any T-Virus vaccine. It's a very effective birth control, and we need to get them to start using mainstream birth control before we give them stuff to stop the T-Virus. I personally do not want them to have a population boon, because then they will be in the pits for years to come (like even more than they are now) and they will come whining to us for financial aid and the such (even more than they do now). I don't think the Earth needs anymore humans. It's all medicine's fault. Too many old folks. We're using too many resources. I think some ordinance needs to be implemented to limit population growth, to say 2 children / family when America's population is over 350 million, and then 3 children / family when it is below say 350 million. We could include increased taxes for those that have more than 2 children over 350 million (that only goes for the families that become impregnated after the 350 million limit is reached and already have 2 children, twins, triplets, etc. count as a single child).

An extensive survey needs to be conducted of how many resources are being used so we can conserve and place limits on how many resources are afforded to each American yearly. Yeah, I know I'm just rambling now, but oh well. I also believe these ordinances / laws need to be enacted elsewhere, say globally. We could also make national population limits based on geography, size, and resources available. No one would currently be affected, say to stop having children if that family already has too many children. Oh well, I guess that's all for today.

I agree. If you're gonna post something like that Andy, think twice and keep it to yourself. AIDS is a fag disease and everyone hates fags. What the hell? I have never, EVER heard anyone say that before...especially since its about aids. I suggest you get out of here before you start something...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2005-03-06 at 20:46:15
Last thing I heard, 80% of women in Kenya and South Africa were HIV positive.

HIV is a far bigger problem than the occasional tsunami.

That comment was kind of out-of-character from Andy. His avatar has changed too - maybe it's someone hi-jacking his account.

Fine, it's just my views. I really don't like gay people because it's not natural. Tsuanmi victims arnt a large problem in the world because it was not preventable, but disasters like terrorists are. I know its out of character capt will, but it's true. Maybe I used the wrong words though.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2005-03-09 at 15:23:57
All animals have been shown to show homosexual tendencies, so it could be natural.

Obviously the human body isn't designed for 'rear entry,' so to speak; so much blood is probably transferred in anal sex, leading to an increased chance of HIV being transmitted.

So HIV prevalence amongst gays isn't anything to do with 'divine retribution' against gays or anything - it's just a biological thing that causes a high amount of HIV/AIDS among homesexuals.

Also, calling it a 'fag disease' is being ignorant of the fact that a far larger percentage of heterosexual people contract HIV in the world than homosexuals/bisexuals.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Drakiel on 2005-03-09 at 16:06:03
Yea I was gonna mention that...
Do you guys know ANYTHING about AIDS?
To be honest, I don't... and sexual relations are not the only way to transmit.

BLOOD, and amount of it, in any way, transmits it.
I believe it's also hereditary...

The Tsunami, we had a lot of americans down there, I mean you hear reports about them. American Tourists, and wherever our people are involved, WE get involved pretty much. Also yes, I agree it's much more visible and instant than the ongoing war on AIDS.

No offence in ANY way shape or form, I think we should all do what we can do find a cure for AIDS... however...
Think about how long the AIDS problem has been going on.
AT LEAST my life time. Heck I remember bring 5 years old and seeing commercials on T.V.
Think about how many MILLIONS of people gave to the cause. They'd have BILLIONS of dollars for research. How can they NOT freakin' find a curse with billions of dollars? With the great minds of the world today, perhaps there is a higher reason?

This is a very negative outlook, but maybe researches have FOUND the cure for the disease, but refuse to claim so. Doing so, will cause them millions of dollars a year in donations to FIND The cure. Why would they let the money stop flowing? (I know I know, payment for the cure would be their money-making scheme, but why when they can get it for free?)

Anyway, this has been ongoing for the longest time and people just.... get used to it.
It's like seeing poor and homeless men on the side of the street daily. You begin to ignore them.
