Indie - Short for independent rock. In terms of music it would be independent of major labels/mainstream stuff.

Indie used to be a band who wasn't signed or wasn't very well known (to indie hipster trash, the less fans a band has the more awesome it is). Now it's more about sound than anything else. Bands like Snow Patrol and Iron & Wine are considered indie and they're both signed and pretty well know.
Indie rock pisses me off because my favorite shirt is faded and torn with a band logo (or something... you can't really tell what it is anymore and I don't remember) on the front and when ever anyone sees me warring it with a pair of jeans that aren't band new they
ing call me indie. In summation, you all.

Indie is a type of music. The Killers are indie and they are signed. When you download some bands on Limewire or put them on a program that labels them, such as Itunes, it sometimes labels them as Indie and I know that they are signed.
There are indie games too. Games that people make just for fun and don't get published or whatever. So I guess the term goes both ways.
