I just got a great idea to cut down on map file sizes for the community yet keep a large selection of cool sounds for poeple to use in their maps. Well you know how we can basically edit strings of sounds and set the paths to whatever we want? Well ... well we should set a standard for people to use.
Basically if someone needs a sound in their map they will add it and edit the strings to go to a folder in their starcraft directory. And the OSF will give people a list of sounds and links to download those sounds that should be found in that directory. That way everyone using the OSF (downloading the sounds and putting them in the folder) can hear all the sounds in the map and not have to deal with hundreds of different maps with the same sound or whatever in them taking up way too much space on their HD.
"/Starcraft/Sounds/Sen"
We can just make it a thread and hire someone or a group of people to sift through the sounds in the DLDB and provide the sound names/links in the thread. And then create a new tutorial that describes the system to change the strings so well that even n00bs can understand (hell, I could do the tutorial and start off this project aswell).
What do you guys think?
I have no clue about what you just said.
It seems to me like you want to make a thread will all the sounds it it... isn't that why the DLDB is for?
Explain it some more.
BeeR, it's like broodat.mpq. EVERYONE with broodwar has it, right? Well OSSF is a folder in the starcraft folder that everyone (who downloads the sounds and makes the file) will have. So everyone who makes a map that is OSSF compatable (has sounds used in the folder) will play no sounds to those people who don't have OSSF and it will play sounds for those people who do have OSSF.
It benefits EVERYONE. 56k users make 1 download of all the sounds and download small 30kb-90kb maps. Cable users don't have to wait for them aswell. And it saves HD space.
I see.
This is actually pretty good, map size will decrease tremendously.
Once in a while, we could update this to include even more sound. I for one think that this is an excellent idea.
I thought the sounds had to be in a mpq file. Or do they?
I always thought it would be cool if you could referance a website in the string of a wav. Cause downloading something off of a website would be alot faster than though b-net. But i'm pretty sure that isn't possable.
I'm pretty sure they don't have to be in an MPQ. And what you mentioned is impossible, but even if you could do it it would make the map lag when you had to DL it and play it.
I'm going to make an official thread for this tomorrow and get this going, but first im going to write up a tutorial, compile a beta sound list and maybe make a bulk sound pack.
I'm also going to seperate sounds to folders.
/Starcraft/OSF/Sounds
/Starcraft/OSF/Music
/Starcraft/OSF/Voices
Any other folder suggestions?
Weapons
Zoinks (just kidding)
Or maybe your folders are more generic than that.
Yeah i knew it would do the whole lag thing if you tried to download it as you play it. Thanks
I have alot of wavs lol
Alright well it looks like I'll have to add them tp patch_rt.mpq ... but that's still no problem. Weapons added to the list.
